Where can I buy an Nvidia GeForce 9800M GT? Can it go into my m15x?

I'm thinking about buying alienware's area 51 m15x, but I don't want to spend a whopping $350 on a GeForce 9800M GT. Can I buy this anywhere else and install it myself? And if not, should I get the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870? Can i get either one of these online or anywhere else cheaper? Much help needed!! THANKS!

If you would like to save yourself money, I would strongly suggest going with a Sager NP8662 (Clevo M860TU). First of all, you wouldn't have to worry about the excessively hot and outdated 9800M GT because you would have a brand new cooler and faster 260M GTX in the Clevo. Secondly, you would be getting much better quality and reliability for LESS money than the Alienware.

Check out XoticPC for the NP8662.

    Seconded.

However to better answer your question: While 9800M GTs are available, they're very expensive. You won't save any money at all really by buying a separate one and putting it in yourself.

Ok so could I maybe buy the ATI radeon for cheap? Is it any good? And how about that 260 GTX?

The 260M GTX is more powerful than either the ATI 3870 or the 9800M GT.

The card won't be readily available for sale for a while, but in a few weeks you can contact some resellers and see if they would sell it to you. Either way, it will not be cheap by any means. You are going to spend a lot of money and time just trying to get the card - the way to save yourself the most money is by buying a notebook with the card already in it.

How much are you spending on your Alienware setup with the ATI?

I guess you're really set on that alienware for some reason.
Well, if you get it, do yourself the favor of getting yourself the 9800M GT.
Getting one separately is going to be like 500 bucks.

Keep in mind that you are paying a LOT of money for old hardware. No other notebooks come with the 3870 or the 9800M GT anymore - everyone else moved on to the ATI 4 series and the Nvidia 200 series.

Along with everyone else, I'd strongly recommend you take a look at the Sager NP8662. It doesn't look quite as nice as the Alienware machines; but it still looks great. It will also cost a lot less; which means you can upgrade it better.

Just think how your friends will be when they see how fast Crysis runs - even if the laptop doesn't look quite as good as theirs.

Functionality over looks everytime for me; but it's up to you.

    The 3870 isn't horrible. It's a bit better than the 8800M GTS.

I have no idea why anyone would spend more to get less. Like everyone else, I highly recommend you take a close look at the NP8662. I can't stress this any more!
