You have to have an MXM compatible laptop, the DV5 doesnt have an MXM gfx card :(.

LOL. I removed a cover and say the gpu connected to the laptop's PCI-16 graphics card slot. There's an extra slot for another gpu. So what are u ppl saying saying that the gpu is embedded and non upgradeable?

.... the GPU IS embedded. Go ahead and waste the money and a card. But don't even bother coming back and complaining to us that it didn't work. Your laptop only has two pci-e slots. One for a wireless card, and the other is for a tv-tuner.

hustheman it's in the place in the picture where the temperature is marked as 88. Bane, even the bloody pc evalution done by 3D Mark Vantage said i have another free pci-16 graphics card slot. Let me quote it.

    Card Slot
    Order 1
    Designation PCI Express Graphic X16
    Type PCI Express
    Characteristics PME Signal, Hot-Plugs
    Data Bus Width 0 b
    Details Available

This is the empty slot. And the one which is full is this one.

    PCI NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT0x10de0x06490x3603103c0x00a1
    Bus Type: PCI Express
    Revision: 2.0
    Enabled: true
    Rate: 16
    Sideband Addressing: Not Supported 0x00000001
    Fast Write: Not Supported 0x00000001

So i should be able to access the gpu through that cover.

Was that 9700m GT offered as an option when you got the laptop?

You can only upgrade to what HP was offering when it was purchased and thats a best case scenario, if its embedded, which it most likely is, you can do nothing, you cant just drop in a graphics card, these are not desktops. Theres always connector and BIOS issues.

And you cannot run both of them together I hope you know, if this even works which I doubt it will, only one card will run, I doubt there is even the slightest hope of SLI drivers for this laptop, plus the fact that they are different cards anyways.

AND it is not MXM, meaning you cant just buy an 9700m GT, and this again being a best case scenario, and HP has the right motherboard carrying this card, your motherboard will have to be replaced, which can be pretty expensive.

You know there is basically no difference between the two cards by the way? Unless your cards blown theres no reason to upgrade, there will be almost no difference in gaming. The only 97XX series card that is really good and will show major difference is the 9700m GTS, it has a 256bit bus and thats the main factor, as well as having more shader units.

I give up trying to explain this to you. I really wish you do find a 9700m gt and buy it, just so you will learn...

Ask this in the HP forums, and they will tell you the same freaking thing.

It's the way hp designs their laptops.

You bring a new definition of noob to the table. Read peoples advice, they probably know more than you do and are only trying to save you a lot of time and money. Disregard it at your own peril :p

There is next to no difference between the 9600m and 9700m and you have no way of cooling the GPU if you somehow manage to install it where the picture says 88F.
