So my buddy got a $900 ASUS G73JH rbbx05 refurbished and it came with a defective 5870, hardcore artifacting and GSOD. No driver/bios would fix it. He can't return it because were in Afghanistan right now and we have no out-going shipping from our small base. So I decided to see if I can just order a new MXM 3.0 card from somewhere, a new/used 5870m or 460m would be fine. Anyone know where I can find these notebook gpus to purchase online? Or would any MXM 3.0 card work, really I'm just trying to get it working enought to play games. Don't want to spend more than $300 on another GPU to get this laptop to work.

I believe most people find them on eBay.

Well if you could buy those two cards, I'm fairly sure they would cost over $300. Furthermore, I think Asus uses a proprietary mxm slot therefore any card wouldn't work.

You'd need to order directly from Asus.

RJtech sells 5870m's for $350, non-refundable. However as TareTaker has mentioned asus do not use ref cards and use a unique type of mxm special to their model. However $350 for a card that performs just under a 5770 is not worth it anyways.

It's also the second fastest mobile card...While the HD5770 hasn't been the "hawt stuff" performer for quite a while (arguably, never), the HD5870m has been, and still is.

Jeez that $350 sounds like a steal considering the 2 year old 8800m gtx is still around $750 when mine died and I was trying to find one from Sager, Ebay and the NBR marketplace is definitely the way to go for a new laptop GPU

Don't use MXM upgrade, they sell MXM standard slot cards. Asus uses a card that is a reverse MXM slot to keep people from being able to source the cards anywhere but an Asus computer or directly from them. If you do buy one make 100% certain it is an Asus card.

Again, as said in the other thread you created.

You have to order from Asus ONLY unless you can somehow find a Asus HD5870M on Ebay, which I highly doubt. And currently the only way is to RMA since Asus is not selling the HD5870M on their eStore. Any HD5870M you order from RJTech, Ebay, MXM Upgrade or any other source other than Asus will not work, will not even fit...

Asus Parts does not have them, but can check back later, but highly doubt that situation will change. Maybe can find them and may have it in stock, but I highly doubt that as Asus seems to be always short in stock of them.

Yes it is. That's how much performance mobile GPU cost. They are not cheap and 2x more than their desktop variant. If you want something similar in performance from Nvidia mobile, again, multiple that by 2X again...

You're absolutely correct, the only thing that will fix it is a VBios

    Did you guys do this?
