Depends whether it's pal or ntsc.

It was PAL and at the top of the screen in the emulator where I have a few statistics it says FPS - 30: VPS - 50 - SPEED - 100%

I noticed that when the FPS dropped by 1 fps it said speed 98%.

Did you hit the Config button and make sure that Enable Dual Core and lock threads to cores boxes were checked?

I have those settings along with full native resolution on the same version and I left frame limit on auto. Also make sure that under the Dsp button that Audio throttle is enabled. I have all of the boxes ticked on there though.

You should test Burnout 2, I find that runs at near full speed although I prefer the PS2 version.

yeah I had all that enabled...well maybe not one of the boxes on the audio stuff.

I'm gonna try this again after I clean install and get rid of all the hp bloatware. I think it's slowing me down some (among other things)

Jeez, 2010 and still the hardware isn't capable at $1000+ ? :( :( :( Don't tell me I'm gonna have to not play emus or just have to get a GX... Please keep trying, and also please post (when it finally works), the version/link to the emu version that works.

    Thanks guys!

I'll try again after clean installing next week.

also it may just be some games don't run well period with pcsx2 (need dat 3Ghz or better emulator improvements)

Raiden III runs full speed with no issues besides a bit of shaky camera in the menus and stuff. ..not really sure what causes it but it was like that in Ace combat 5's menu.

    just using recommended speed hacks.

    gonna try without speed hacks.

ok yeah first level runs full speed with or without speed hacks.

audio (explosions and stuff) are...like 50-100-150ms behind.

maybe. they may be on time and I'm just not used to how the game sounds (but it feels off a bit, doesn't stop it from being enjoyable).

didn't watch the fmvs but they ought to work since it looks like they're done in engine.

ace combat 5 is demanding. raiden III...ain't

I was checking what speed my CPU was at while playing Zelda Windwaker and it was only 2.27 - 2.40 Ghz Dual Core Turbo Boost most of the time and it appears to be constantly locked to 30 fps.

It would be interesting to see how these emulators function on the Desktop CPU found in the D900f / Comanche. I have heard some got really good overclocks in that.

huh. wish it'd run on mine.

cpu was getting 2.66Ghz dual core turbo boost.

but I'm guessing maybe the vid card and/or the audio issues are slowing it down then. I tried openGL and direct 3d9

You should try at a much lower resolution just to see the performance difference. I don't know enough about that GPU to have any idea.

The hardware is more than capable, it is just that it costs so much more for so much less when dealing with the mobile equivalents. From my testing, the mobile i7 820qm performs about the same as the mobile i7 620m at 3.06 Ghz.

I figured the performance in Zelda Windwaker would have been the same with MagusDraco's i5-520m but it isn't so I wonder whether it is due to the CPU or down to the GPU now. Both of us have the same settings, the same emulator version and his CPU speed is higher than mine (mine Turbo Boosts lower than it could do).

Regardless, the mobile i7 620M clocked at 3.06 ghz on both Cores still does not get full speed in many Ps2 titles but I still think that is more due to the code of the emulator. An over clocked 4.0 Ghz Desktop CPU is possibly just enough to offset some of the unoptimised areas of code much like how a Quad Core can play unoptimised games better than a Dual Core can in PC gaming.

Having said that, I get the feeling that the Dolphin emulator is at a very mature state so this makes me wonder. I do get 60 fps in Burnout 2 and some other titles though.

I think I was running zelda at native.

It may be more the svn revision of the emulator.

I was just using 2.0 not one of the ones that are made by the people on the forum

    that's unexpected.

core 0 is running at 2793 Mhz sometimes 2926 Mhz.

core1 is constantly at 2660 Mhz.

    R5824. I get 80-90% speed.

gonna try the latest revision (I got stuff open right now but eh. *shrugs*)

are you guys just testing games to see which games run and which dont?
if so i have a list i made a while back explaining how things ran on my x9100 cpu at 3.06 ghz. its a little bit dated but i find it still mostly applies.
(this is for pcsx 2 there are no dolphin games tested)

If you guys are interested in it i can post it. its only the games i own or borrowed, needless to say its unfinished since i lost interest in it because no one cared about it at the time i made it.

I'm hoping performance would be better, cuz I intend to play either emualtor in windowed resolution, possibly as small as 640*480, since that'll appear pretty big on a 14 inch screen.

ok here it is just remember that its slightly old so its possible that some games may run better. hopefully the formatting i used works in this forum correctly since i just copy and pasted it from a txt file on my computer
    List Begins Now

NOTE: i am not playing these games from start to finish that would take forever. i try to play at least 30 mins into the game or if rpg i try to play at least an hr

Games Playability on Pcsx2 (Beta SVN Build 0.9.7 r2426)

    System Used
    Laptop with an x9100 cpu @ 3.06ghz
9800m gts 1gb vram (no OC)
    PM45 Chipset
    4GB 1066 DDR3 Ram
320 western D. Black x2 in raid 0 (probably unimportant as games are run from original discs)
    Dvd Drive
    Manufacturer Hitachi-LG
    Buffer Size 2 MB
    Interface SATA
DVD-ROM 8x max read (although i havent seen it go past 4x speed as i play)

    Plugins used

No speedhacks or fixes of any kind are used unless specified.

    Games List
    Resident Evil Outbreak
(played the entire first scenario) seems fine

    Resident Evil Outbreak File #2
(played wild things scenario till i died aprox 1 hr 30 mins) seems fine

    Grandia III
Plays fine but system req. seem to be real high as i get dips in fps to upper 40's. also seems to be a bug on leaving town fmv (the one where miranda says look where your going at end) bug causes a stall in emulation (can be skipped with fmv skip option in main menu) game seems to be fine after that. although i didnt play through it all.

    Castlevania Lament Of Innocence
Played 37 mins into game seems to run good but fps drops into upper 40' lower 50's in large heavily populated areas or areas with lots of special effects. not sure but there seems to be a shadow bug on main character although if its not like that it looks like it should be so not game breaking at all. other then that all seems well.

    Tales Of Legendia
Title Screen Corrupted (push start screen) main menu fine. Games runs unplayably slow with GS plugin in hardware mode (11 fps) with plugin in software mode title screen is fixed and game runs faster (20fps) but causes massive texture corruption. Game not playable at all and speed hack do nothing in hardware mode didnt try speed hacks under software mode. (sucks i wanted to play this one too :()

    Dot. Hack Infection (Part 1)
Game seem to run great with rare fps drops. i did experience an occasional fps drop into the 20's but found out that it was due to my cpu dropping the multiplier down from 11.5 to 6. other then this (which doesnt happen that often) game seems to be completely playable. in game cinematics sometimes drop in fps but not by much and even then audio seems to play fine. i didnt come across any issues in the time i played which was about an hr of play. oh intro fmv (starting a new game) fps drops down into the 40's but doesnt seem to cause any audio anomalies so you wouldnt really notice it.

    Dragon Quest VIII
This game is a bit of an odd ball. there seems to be no graphical corruption of any kind but fps are somewhat low although playable. when voices are being heard they are slow and causes audio anomalies. enabling speedhacks and putting the VU cycle stealing on moderate gives this game a massive fps boost with no noticable side effects. although even if you get full speed the voices still seem slow with a sort of crackling anomaly. i find the best combination is to have the VU cycle stealing on moderate and to change VU1 to superVU recompiler. I will try this game again at a later date from an iso running from hdd to see if that fixes audio because it seems game loads constantly. so this game is playable but not perfect.

Inuyasha The Secret Of The Cursed Mask
This games runs fine with no problems at all. The only issue i have with this game is that its boring lol so i didnt play it for very long.

    Kingdom Hearts
Game runs great only bug ive found is with a few battle audio sounds(very few of the sound effects make weird noises). this game seems to suffer from loading directly from disc as you constantly get a pause hear the disc spin up then game resumes. not game breaking as the pause isnt very long but you might wanna run this one from iso. played this one for 2 hrs from the start. you sometimes get very small fps drops but nothing major.
EDIT: Due to many requests i confirmed the there are no pauses when run from iso located on hdd.

    Trapt
one of my favs. so glad this game runs well on the emulator. there is a texture glitch in which some textures are just missing but weirdly enough for this game it helps as you can see through walls and some floors lol. during cinematic sequences fps is full speed but during game play fps are in the upper 40's although if you enable speedhacks and then enable the BIFC0 Spin Detection it gives this game a boost to upper 50's fps. although this game doesnt seem to get a full 60 fps during actual gameplay it seems much faster and smoother then the actual ps2 so i guess this game doesnt run full speed on a ps2. so this is a definite win for emulation. played an hr session.

    Dot. Hack Mutation (part 2)
Pretty much just look at dot hack infection above as they run pretty much the same.

    Ico
game runs full speed although it takes a bit to get it to run. first you have to make an iso of the game. you then have to use the linuz iso cdvd plugin. now you have to configure the gsdx plugin. under the gsdx plugin you have to select either use original ps2 resolution or pick a scaling option of 2x, 3x or 4x (i recommend not going higher then 2x because you get extremely slow speeds at a higher multiplier) if you dont do this youll get a sort of bug where you can see two of everything slightly off center (almost like if it was a 3d effect). i did notice that on one of the intro fmv's itll freeze and stall emulation and repeat the audio in a loop. if you skip this fmv you can get to the gameplay not sure if its how it is or if i have a damaged iso from a scratched disc. it took me 3 hrs to figure this out so i didnt play very far into it. i only played a few mins after you free yorda(cant believe i still remember that name) but other then the fmv i mentioned it ran fine.

    The Bouncer
game runs full speed with no graphical corruption. i have to use lilypad plugin because game doesnt accept any input from xpad plugin. also almost if not all punching and kicking sound effects replaced with something that sounds like atari beeping sound effects. its fun to play as long as you can keep laughing at the sound effects then it gets unbearably annoying. story mode does nothing but crash the game after the first level making this game unplayable.

    Red Faction
    This game just doesnt launch.

    Red Faction II
game runs full speed but fps drops to upper 40's when there is lots of effects going on. only bug ive found is that you can see lights through walls (the little glow effect they have) perfectly playable. i played an hr into the game.

    Unlimited Saga
ill tell yah right now this is even more boring to play then the inuyasha game above. i just see no point in playing it. well game runs perfectly full speed no glitches. just too boring i tried to force myself to play an hr but i could only bear 25 mins.

    Gran Turismo 3
game runs fine with no graphical or audio anomalies but it runs real slow at 26 fps. with a racing game this is not even close to being playable. speedhacks had no effect meaning this game had a bottleneck somewhere else maybe being that its from disc slowed it down i dunno.

    Xenosaga Episode 1
game seems to run fine but i can only get to main menu. once i hit start game all i get is a radar down in the corner with a black screen but the fps say 60 so i dunno.

    Zone Of The Enders
Game runs with no graphical or audio errors but game does run a bit on the slow side. speedhacks help but cant seem to find a combination of em that work without crashing the game and offering full speed.

    Summoner
game seems to run full speed with a very minor glitch in where in front of your character there is a long rectangular box that just is there for no reason. although game runs full speed and has no serious graphical or audio glitches it is not playable because upon talking to the first guy you see which is like maybe 20 seconds into the game it freezes and stalls emulation.

    Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
game loads fine until it trys to start. after a tiny amount of data loaded it freezes emulation and makes a really high pitch noise that hurts your ears. needless to say unplayable.

Ace Combat 4 : Shattered Skies
game can be played but i wouldnt consider it playable because you have to skip all fmvs within 1 second or itll freeze and stall emulation so there is absolutely no story. also there is like 90% of textures missing during actual gameplay (makes you feel like your flying through space but without any stars or well anything but pictures of land passing by below you) the only fmv that seems to be watchable without freezing is the fmv you get before the title screen. oh gameplay is also not full speed but pretty close with fps in the lower 50's.

    Grand Theft Auto III
i honestly thought this game would have the same issue as vice city but it loads fine and has no graphical or audio problems. the problem with this game is the fps are erratic with it sometimes being in the lower 50's then all of a sudden a drop to lower 20's then up and down constantly. this game can be playable but since it runs slower then 60 fps the audio sounds like its in slowmotion. speedhacks didnt seems to help at all but this might be due to the fact that its being run from disc as i know this game is one of those games that constantly loads stuff so maybe running from iso would solve fps issue but considering there is a pc version of this game i didnt bother to try it.

    Rune : Viking Warlord
its starting to seem like any game thats on a compact disc might need to be run from iso. im putting this game on hold for now

    Oni
this is another game i have that is on compact disc. im trying this game to test my theory on cd games and it seems like its true because ico, rune and now this game all freeze upon reading sector 17 on loading the game. i bypassed this with ico by running it using the linuz iso plugin (which basically loads the game from iso on hdd) will put this game on hold for now as well.

    Godai Elemental Force
compact disc game on hold for now (read oni description for explanation on hold)

    Extermination
this game runs almost perfectly. i say almost because all fmvs do not display video but they do have audio so i guess if you have a good imagination you could think of the fmvs as audio books?? the actual gameplay runs butter smooth. i did find a way to display the video on the fmv's although not a very good solution it works. what you have to do is set the gsdx plugin to run in dx10 software mode. this actually didnt have as big of an fps drop as i thought it would because for the most part gameplay is full speed but it can drop to lower 40's it does fix the fmvs though. im giving it a a good smiley because you can play it very well but if you dont wanna use software mode then fire up your imagination.Note: i have a suspicion that this would be ok from iso only because as i look at the console it says cdread:... while its playing the fmvs but dvdread:... during gameplay. considering the issue with cd games maybe from iso itll be fine ill test that later though.

    God Of War
games starts, menus fine and plays intro video fine but gameplay is real slow 24fps and graphical corruption everywhere except on kratos hes rendered perfectly for some reason lol.

    Nba Live 07
i hate sports games so i dont care that this one works horrifyingly bad. menu completely corrupted and gameplay running at 40ish fps with all textures missing(only solid colors are visible and even then only like 6 colors are on screen).

    God Of War II
main menus seem fine and intro video fine as well. freezes after intro video stalling emulation.

    Grand Turismo 4
    Game doesnt load.

    Galerians: Ash
ive never played this game before but it seems to run fine i do not believe there are any glitches whatsoever. runs full speed also (there are a tiny few places where fps drops)

    Final Fantasy X
no complaints game seems to be perfect.(minor slow down with some effects but other then that runs flawlessly)

    Final Fantasy X-2
this game is kinda strange because although the gameplay runs fine and mostly full speed the fmvs run at half speed and are severely bugged.(it flashes and almost looks like it has scanlines vertically and horizontally)

    Fatal Frame III
game loads fine up to main menu but upon starting a new game it just freezes and stalls emulation.

Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Game loads with lines going vertically through everything including fmvs. fmvs play fine but with the lines i mentioned. gameplay is completely corrupted to the point where all you can see is your Hud and that is it.

    Kengo
game runs good although the intro fmv doesnt work. gameplay is full speed (even though full speed is slow as hell in my opinion) other then that game is fully playable but because its a cd based game you have to create an iso on your hdd and use linuziso plugin to play it.

    Okami
this game runs great with no visible glitches or bugs. the only problem is that the game doesnt run full speed all the time and likes to sometimes hang around the lower 50's in fps. even then it is still fully playable and fun. ive never tried this game before and its actually pretty good. this game has the longest intro ever though. i clocked it at about 20mins of story before any gameplay.

    Kingdom Hearts 2
I didnt find any visible or audible glitches or bugs. runs real well but the first kingdom hearts runs faster. this kingdom hearts runs well and full speed but has dips in fps here and there. still completely playable though. all fmvs seemed fine although i skipped most of em though as to not spoil the first kingdom hearts for me.

I was getting seriously slow performance on Hulk Ultimate Destruction, anywhere from 10 - 15 fps with 20 - 25 fps in cutscenes and the sound was very slow, this was in the official build of Dolphin version 2.0.

However, In the current SVN which was only 42 minutes old at the time of download, I get a constant 30 - 43 fps with minimal slow downs which is full speed for the Pal version I think. So this just highlights how we shouldn't forget that many factors other than pure CPU speed come into play here. The SVN versions can also make use of Nvidia GPU's OpenCL capability.

On the latest SVN, Zelda Windwaker runs a bit slower for me unless I change the following settings under Graphics Advanced. I had to put a tick in the box that says ''To Texture'', that is underneath the box that has a tick in it ''Enable EFB Copy''.

For a good guide regarding game settings and some details of what each setting does, check here

i'm going to revive this for another question.
    My current rig is this:
    Core 2 Extreme QX9100 @ 2.26gh overclocked to 2.5
    9600M GT
    4gb ddr2 800 ram

Plays things fine, but of course, i want moar power. So, I need help between these 3 options:

    1. Change CPU to X9100

    2. Change CPU to QX9200

    3. Get new laptop, MSI GT660 w/
    Intel Core Extreme 920XM
    nvidia 285m GTX
    6gb ram

I'm still skeptical of this whole "turbo boost" thing, which is why I havn't moved to the i7 platform. can anybody explain this in terms of pcsx2?

Change to what ever has the fastest raw clock rate on 2 Cores for PCSX2. You will only see vast improvements when going beyond 4 Ghz though so you could be using a 2.5 Ghz Vs a 3.0 Ghz and not really notice any benefit. Don't forget how much speed difference the emulation code can make as well as mentioned in my previous post regarding Hulk Ultimate.

i think it would really depend on what you plan to play rather then what cpu for you to choose. although yes the best option all around would be the fastest raw clock rate on two cores as mention by laptopnut.

so what do you plan to play on it because its possible the game you plan to play may not even run properly.

Turbo boost is nothing to be skeptical about, it's great for notebook especially 4 cores CPUs which are clocked quite slow ; it allows for much higher frequencies when some cores are unused which is exactly the case for pcsx2. A core 2 quad clocked at 2,2ghz never gets past this while a i7-840 can get to almost 3ghz from turbo on 2 cores.

    Good to see this revitalized.

Anywhoo, as I may have reported in the past, my dinodesktop is a single-core Athlon 64 3200+ OC'd from 2.01 to 2.45ghz, and is "able" to emulate Dolphin at like 2 frames per second during SSBM gameplay. Intros, menus, videos, and sound are all fine. PCSX2 is the same, but maybe 1fps hahahaha. So I'm thinking that any 2ghz or higher dual-core CPU with at least 2gb ram would be fine. I had 1gb ram before, and recently found some old ram to add to it, so I'm at 2gb ram now. Absolutely no diff--maybe cuz its DDR400/PC3200 ram.

Basically, any new computer with 4gb ram, and at least 2ghz dual-core cpu should work. There's an Acer laptop on yt which has a i5-430M + 5650 + 4gb ram running both emulators. I imagine if you're shopping for a new desktop, anything will run it since it's 2010. If you're buying a laptop, make sure you have at least an i5 cpu. All i7s should handle it, since they all run at high freqs in dual-core mode.

    Good luck!

I don't think 2 GHz is enough. I'm running a desktop i7 930 with stock clocks and an ATI HD4870, and Tekken 5 still lags at times on PCSX2.

2Ghz dual core won't suffice for PCSX2, I have tried a few games with my p8400 at 2.26Ghz in the past, the FPS was miserable. I have huge boost in fps when I overclock it to 2.8Ghz, which makes many games playable despite of some slowdowns in certain stages. 3Ghz+ dual cores are recommended, and should serve well for most of the ps2 games.

    Bummer!

    Double bummer!

So now what? Must we go for 3ghz dual core? Or at least 2.5ghz dual core? Cuz all of the mobile i5's can accomplish that, right? i7 mobile also right?

My mobile i7 820qm gives me really good performance in PCSX2 but that can reach up to 2.8 Ghz in Turbo Boost when in Dual Core mode. This will depend on what games you play though, for example in Disgaea I get a constant 60 fps but in other games you might get half the amount.

No amount of CPU power will make up for a part of inefficient or anomaly in the code or how a game interacts with the emulator. People suggest that going up to 4 Ghz on a Desktop PC may be the only way to make a difference with this though.

Hey guys, how are you locking your i5's and i7's into dual core mode? Is there a setting in pcsx2 that I can hit, or do I need some outside software? My comp is in my sig, and I can run FFXII fine, with fps-fluctuating from 45-60. Is there anything I can do to optimize it so that it doesn't fluctuate as much?

Also, do iso's read quicker than the discs themselves? I'm assuming so, but would like some input. Thanks!

You bet!! X9000 at 4Ghz should run most of the games fine, save for a few buggy ones that aren't very compatible with the emulator. PCSX2 loves higher clocked dual cores.

Turbo boost will automatically place your mobile i7 in Dual Core mode. Your FFXII is probably fluctuating so much due to the emulators settings. Try enabling and testing various speed hack settings and changing the recompiler from the default to the legacy one.

Using an iso instead of a physical CD will improve performance as well.

Now say I were to buy an MSI GT663, with an i7 920XM, and change multipliers AND "turbo" the fsb as MSI has built in. do you think I can reach 4ghz with the 920XM? MSI offers a great cooling system for their laptops, so I'm not concerned about heat. I've also been dying to play wii games in HD, and I think this processor will be able to do that. Also, metroid prime (for dolphin), should be considered a processor benchmark, since it is VERY resource intensive. That has been the most difficult game to be emulated, even harder than Twilight Princess.

yes i am 100% certain that playing games from iso is better then disc from my previous testing sessions i had a few months ago.

i didnt test Final fantasy but kingdom hearts had some slow downs from 60fps down to upper 40 all because of the disc since i had no slow downs at all when run from iso.

there are a few hacks you can run with final fantasy that will make the game pretty much fly so make sure you try em.

from my experience you will need at least 2.8ghz core 2 duo performance to get decent frame rates. of course higher is better but going from 2.8 to 3.0 ghz doesnt have that much of an increase of fps (depending on game) as say going from 2.8 to 2.6ghz (this drops fps alot more then you would think lol)

if there is any game in particular youd like me to test out different frequencies at ill give it a shot (other then final fantasy i lost that disc :() of course only if i have the game will i try it

Definitely go ISO method. As for clock speed, FFX plays just fine on my 2.26ghz q9100. actually, almost all ps2 games work fine at this speed. its just gamecube dolphin games, that take a lot more power to emulate.

I don't think you will be able to get a stable and consistent 4 Ghz on a laptop due to power constraints. Regarding Metroid Prime for Dolphin, I m not far into the game but the frame rates varies anywhere from 23 fps briefly, 25 fps, 35 fps all the way up to 50 fps but so far it is playable. Maybe in high action scenes it will become unplayable. Other games in the dolphin emulator are full speed for me such as the Zelda series, Hulk Ultimate, Mario etc.

I wonder if pcsx2 will benefit from the AVX set. I know SSE4 and up are very important so with AVX being an extension of SSE shall we expect some serious improvements from its implementation ?

which is why I state that Metroid Prime should be considered as the CPU benchmark in emulation. Some guy on youtube has an i7 920 desktop running at 4ghz, and gets fullspeed.

Most of those games you mentioned will only run full speed on 4 Ghz Desktop systems. However, go into your options for the emulator and increase VU cycle stealing, that will speed most of them up.

I know this thread is a bit old but I was just wondering, seeing as PCSX2 spends most of its time intereting the game code and instructions on the fly, why not just code it so that it does that all previously. That way it could be written to a seperate file and run directly. They could even provide a debug option in the program which translates it so that you could tell it to apply certain fixes to make it run properly (at the end it would go through a series of tests and ask if ther were any anomolies etc.).

My wording and technical terms are probably a little bit jumbled up but basically what it would be doing is just porting the game over to PC. This would probably be highly illegal given that it would be midifying and copying the game code but that's never stopped anyone.
