Can you please list each and everyone of them with the exception of GTX since those are out of the budget?

Looking to buy a laptop which has a Maxwell based GPU but my budget is limited to $1000 USD it is going to be for a student going to college who is studying architecture and needs something that runs Autocad smoothly
The Quadro based ones also seem out of budget

So my question is, which are the GPUs that are based on Maxwell not Kepler since I was told to avoid that

    940M, 930M, 845M, 840M, 830M.

That's your lot for non-GTX laptop GPUs based upon Maxwell.

I think your budget would allow for some of the cost-friendly GTX GPUs though (960M, 950M, 860M, 850M).

Look around. Shouldn't be hard to find something with a GTX 860M/960M or 850M/950M within $1000 USD. Like a Lenovo Y50, for instance.

The Quadro K620m is a Maxwell-based GPU, and the Lenovo Thinkpad W550s carries it (and we know how cheap Lenovo is and how good the Thinkpads are).
If you or your child has a university email address, you might be able to get it for around $1000 (maybe after some hidden coupon or something; seems like the student discount just makes it ~$100 over your budget as opposed to ~$130.
But other than that, I ditto what has been said before.

I wouldn't recommend an ULV cpu for autocad, just go for a classic GTX 960M Y50 with Quad i7 in order to get better overall performance..

FTFY. 960M is an 860M rebrand. Why pay more for the same thing? ;)

I didn't know that, so it's the same card and they just give it a new name and sell it more expensive?

Essentially (maybe not more expensive). Same goes for the GTX850m and GTX 950m, GT 940m and GT 840m, and GT 930m and GT 830m.
Just something I found out, and while it's out of your budget, the Quadro K2200m is also a Maxwell-based GPU.
    Just adding onto the database.

Right, so I ended up getting him:

    ASUS N551JK-DM002H
    Intel iCore 7-4710HQ @ 3.50 GHz (6 MB Cache)
    16GB DDR3 1600 MHZ RAM
    nVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 4GB DDR5 RAM
    Samsung 850 PRO 256GB SSD
    15.6" LED 1080P Anti-Glare Screen
    Bang & Okufsen Speaker

I hope it can run Autocad and the other architecture programs fine

thanks bro, that's the max I could afford as a gift really. I think since the 850 is a GTX and not a GT it should handle Autocad fine without any jerkiness or slowness right?
