I'm not a graphics junkie so I'm not going to run games and such on their highest settings and don't need the absolute finest but I wanted to know which of the m17x graphics cards is worth the value of the upgrade, if any.

    1GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon™ HD 6870M [Included in Price]
    2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6990M - add $249.90
    2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 580M - add $499.80
    1.5GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M - add $83.30

I would get the 6990M if you are getting an Alienware, 6870m appears in some high end 17" "regular laptops". Alienware laptops have a premium associated with them so if you get one you should get one that does something other laptops can't do. 6990m maxes pretty much every game out there and it is not seen in "regular laptops".

GTX ones are not worth it.

    Basically what Bill Nye said.

Can you get a 6970 in it? Haven't specced out an m17x in a while. If so that might be a nice compromise for you between the 6990m and base. If not then I would just splurge and get the 6990m no sense really getting a 6870m if you're already spending so much on an m17x.

Nope, those are the only 4 currently available for the m17x. 6970 might be on the m18x but I wasn't looking at that one.

Based on my desired config, other laptops aren't THAT much cheaper, if at all, so the Alienware "premium" is not really the issue for me, was jut trying to gauge the value of the parts I wasn't sure about.

Top of the line with bucks than Nvidia (expensive). Works well too! very well like 580!
