Hi all,
I am currently deciding between two notebooks: one contains the 512MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7600 and the other contains the 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce Go 7900 GS.
Now of course I know the 7900 is better than the 7600, but the 7600 has 512 MB of video memory...does that make it better than the 256MB 7900GS? If anyone could let me know I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you!![]()

While the 7600 may have 512mb dedicated video ram, the 7900 architecture will be running at a faster clip despite having 1/2 as much video ram. Bottomline: go with the 7900 if you're looking for a more powerful GPU.

What kinds of tasks will you be doing? I'd recommend the 7900

ahah, we posted at the same time with the same suggestion

Well, I just want to be able to play games such as Half Life 2, F.E.A.R, etc. on settings as high as possible....and wasn't sure how much of a difference the extra video memory on the 7600 made.
-
None for those games. It may help in time to come, but you'll never find it even come close to out-performing the 7900. Memory is only as useful as the speed its information can be rendered by the GPU.

Also, checkout Chaz's excellent post on GPUs esp. Section 4's FAQ:

the 7600 isnt really made for that kind of memory..(its not 512mb dedicated video memory) so it wont increase the performance much compared to the same 7600 with 256mb of video memory.
The 7900GS is a MUCH more powerful GPU between the two.
btw, to answer your quesiton up there, It would be a waste of money to pay extra for 512mb on the 7600 instead of the 256mb (7600). -
As for the OP, I play those games too, and either card will suffice.
I say go with the more budgetable laptop, OR the 7900 if you can afford it, whichever one you consider the higher priority. -
Ok great - I will go with the 7900. Thanks for all your help everyone.

Nvidia is a Good company, GeFORCE 7900 video card is a BEAST you'll love it

I just asked a lot of these same questions.
You could have posted the gfx cards in the title!
But thanks for the clarifactation to those who responded.
Is there ANY use at all for the "extra" memory on those cards?

This kind of question could have been easily answered by reading the GPU guide.
Which card is more powerful? Please help.
