Just wondering? I like guild wars for the very reason that online play is free. Also the game is good too! I just got it today, any tips?

They're both good in their own respects, I personally like FFXI best out of all MMORPGs but I've yet to try Guild Wars, I'm considering buying it sometime soonish, though. I tried WoW, can definitely see why so many people like it, but it was too easy for my tastes.

As of yet there aren't really any MMORPGs made with stellar graphics, so actually, WoW, FFXI and GW really have top of the line graphics for the time being. Realize these games are MUCH bigger than any single player games in sheer size and scope. Regardless though, I hate it when people downplay a game and don't play it based only and entirely on the graphics. As a dedicated gamer for about ten years now (no, it's not very impressive, it's just a statement >.>) it makes no sense to me.

Just to be clear, I realize everyone has their own opinion as to wether they like a game or not, I don't like WoW a whole lot but I can see why people do and it's worth paying for for them.

    I just don't like when I see 'it has bad graphics so it sucks' kind of things, yours wasn't quite that bad but it came dangerously close. ^^;

I still play WoW, the graphics aren't bad, not the best, but what do you expect for virtually no loading times(except for loading the game at first and switching continents :p).

Also, I've always been a Warcraft fan, so the lore really appealed to me.

WoW is easy, until lvl20+, then it gets alot tougher. Doing an instance alone? Goodluck! :D

WoW is easy pretty much the entire way through compared to what I consider hard. I'm more of a hardcore gamer playing several hours every day as often as I can so I don't find many games very difficult anymore because I'm so used to it. I still found FFXI rather hard. You can get to end game in a matter of weeks in WoW if you're dedicated, that's a matter of months in FFXI.

I haven't played wow.. however, I do think guild wars is cool.

The thing I don't like about wow is that the price is kinda up there... and I know no mmorpg has GREAT graphics...

but, I really do get ready to kill people when they are running around bragging about how great the graphics on wow are.... then bash other mmorpgs for havng lesser graphics..

so I stick to ftp mmo's.. particularly conquer and silkroad.. more so conquer..

I played both extensively, over a year ago. I think graphics in both are excellent, with WOW being slightly better. IMO I call Guild Wars a "WOW lite". You can't fall off a cliff, like in WOW. I do like that GW was free online. I prefer to solo, as I don't like grouping, and though I would meet some nice people online I met toooo many b*tt heads, particularly in WOW. I did make a level 60 character in WOW and I was able to solo quite a lot of Guild Wars before having to resort to groups to complete missions. I have a friend who plays WOW with his brother and they enjoy making new characters and working together. I played Silkroad Online for quite a while too. It is a totally free download and free online (last time I played, last Spring). Good graphics, however it is a strictly a grind and farm game. Kill 50 of this, collect 100 of that, 500 of this, 1000 of those!! Still you get sucked in for awhile for leveling and better armor, weapons, and skills. Worth a check.

Meh.. it is strictly a farm game... but, then it does sorta cut out the middle man..

Alot of the time all I want to do is level on an mmorpg.. but, I can't because they want me to raise.. "crafting" to 60 so I can complete blank quest.. so I can get blank equipment nessicery for leveling.. which gets old fast..

But, I have to admit.. I did like runescape.. it was cheap.. the graphics were crap.. but, if you turned off public chat.. you could play for hours on end enjoying yourself doing the same repetitive task 0.o.

I loved it when I was a member and I could steal steal steal all day.

Time spent doesn't = difficulty. The huge difference I noticed was that while yes, getting to max level in World of Warcraft happens much faster than in FFXI, the encounters continue to scale past 60. The game really just begins @60 in World of Warcraft. Blizzard lets you get to the end game quicker so you don't have to put up with an insane trip to see that content. What good is end game content if it takes months to level up to so you are able to attempt that content?

I'd wager to guess that you haven't ever played World of Warcraft's end-game raid instances Naxxaramus or Ahn'Qiraj. Ahn'Qiraj offers some challenging gameplay towards the end, and Naxxaramus offers a good level of difficult progression throughout. There are many encounters which are pure technical fights which require 30+ people to have their a-game faces on and hit every mark.

And that is just PVE difficulty.

PvP difficulty scales directly with the opponents you face. If you consider time spent to be difficulty, then the trip to Grand Marshal via the current game mechanism would be a hearty challange for you. Your hardcore 8hours a day might not even be enough.

It was more of an example than anything, I don't mean time, it's much more than that. When you die in WoW you lose a bit of time, when you die in FFXI you lose around 10% of the experience required to level up to the next level, and depending on how good your group is that may very well be hours of time versus the few minute run back to your body. An actual penalty for dying, the inability to solo besides on specific jobs and several other things make FFXI harder than WoW simply to get to end-game, as well as end-game itself.

I'll admit, I haven't played WoW end-game, but if you haven't played FFXI you've nothing to compare it to.

Here's another example, picture this scenario, you're walking into the domain of a necromancer dragoon named Vrtra who happens to drop some very nice things. While you're fighting her, she is constantly summoning skeleton warriors that are able to wipe out an entire party of 6 people that aren't very skilled. On top of this, if you're not paying attention and your stunners aren't impeccable she can turn around and slap you all with her tail doing around 2000 damage, which is more than 99.9% of players have.

And Vrtra isn't considered one of the hardest anymore, new monsters are added very often, wether it be via update or expansion, constantly raising the bar, above an already very high difficulty. This game was made by and for the Japanese, and regardless of if you're a fan or not, you have to recognize they have some extremely good twitch based game players. This translates over onto FFXI, as well as influencing the creators of it.

As for numbers, various missions, such as Dynamis require 64 people doing the absolute best possible to win, you're flawless, or you're dead in the final fight of Dynamis Xarcabard.

PVP in FFXI is based on player skill for the most part, one job may have a rather large edge over another due to some skills, say a Red Mage (versatile sort of white/black magic caster with some melee elements) versus a melee, earlier on that melee class will be whupped upside-down because of certain advantages. Later on though, skill is what counts most, really. I've seen white mages completely decimate some people. What I mean by later on is higher and higher level caps for the PVP, called Ballista in FFXI. There's also a sort of capture the flag like game called brenner.

They are extremely different games, you can't really compare them. ..Except GW is actually decent and pretty fun for a while, and WoW is the worst piece of **** ever made, but that's only my opinion (and also the truth). Endgame GW pvp was fun for a while (top 100 guilds), though still repetative. The PVE totally sux, GW is (was) all about pvp, though i stopped playing around the first expansion. Never liked expansions, seperates the playerbase too much.

Have fun with your mindless grind wowers!

I played both, and while, in my opinion of course, EverQuest (no, not that piece of crap they call EQII) remains superior to them they are both good pastimes. Not quite as long-lasting as EQ, unless you like PvP (which I don't).

As for graphics, that doesn't factor into my gaming experience. Sure, it's nice to have good graphics, but gameplay is all I care about.

I voted Guild Wars because I have so far enjoyed it more than WoW, but they are about equal.

Ok heres my long winded comparison between the 2 after spending (and still spending) lots of time on both games.

While it may be hard to top the 5 years ive put into EQ, I also had no idea id be playing EQ for 5 years. WoW and Guild wars can turn out to be just the same.. and IMO EQ cannot compare to either today. EQ has no pvp and its archaic engine is not beautiful nore capable of the same gameplay (ie things that you can do, things that can happen, effects that can be applied during battles) as todays current MMORPGS.

WoW and Guild Wars are generaly 2 different beast. WoW has top notch single player content from level 1-60, and its NOT that fast if its your first time in wow. Everyones first time takes several months to reach 60. It offers a wealth of items and content, and very playable PvP. Class balances are an issue in that it suffers from the rock paper scissors concept, and no matter how hard you try, a priest cant really stand toe to toe with a warrior and a big sword, and rogues will pretty much own any robe class it sneaks up on. The high end game is continously getting fleshed out and increased, but you will need the pre-requisited guilds and large partys of people that are so often required and loathed.

Guild wars contains a nice single player experience, wich is more solo friendly then WoW in that you can create a full party of NPC henchmen of different classes and you can pretty much run anywhere with them in explorable areas. How ever the missions (its like a scripted dungion, prophecies has 25 of these) require more tactics and usualy require a full group of people and skill to complete . Unfortunatly while its towns allow for many players to mingle, all explorable lands are instanced (Only you, and the party you bring with you) and are usualy more linier then WoWs lands. The item system is unfortunatly much more limited, with armor pieces consisting of a half dozen sets, and a passable assortment of main and off hand weaponary. However unlike WoW, most items do not get soul bound even after you use it, so you can purchase even the best gear in the game. Thankfully gear is not nearly as much of a factor in Guild Wars. It's spell system (or a better name would be the abilities system, because even melee classes like warriors and archers use them) makes up for a large amount of the tactics used in the game, especialy PVP. Each class has the needed spells to go toe to toe with any other class. The only thing preventing someone from becoming invincable in a 12x12 man battle of course is you can only bring 8 spells into a match. Also each class has 4 pools of spells (secondary class only gets access to 3) and you have a number of skill points to put into each pool to make them stronger. Its like a simpler version of WoW's talents, but rather then 30 talents that might improve 1-2 atributes or line of spells, they have 4 talents that improve the 12 or so spells in each pool by either increasing in power, or durations (most spells last anywhere from 8-40 seconds in GW. There is no longterm buff system, but rather you can have a maintained enchantment wich reduced your mana regen by 1 point).

Also Guild Wars IMO is able to pull off some very ballsy spells and still maintain the best PVP around. What other game would hand the priest (monk) class a spell that prevents more then %10 of a persons hp being taken per hit for 18 seconds with a 5 second cool down? Congrats GW for finally stoping the 2 hit death syndrome all us robe wearers have had to endure in high end fights. ;)

Guildwars does lack end game PvE though. While it does contain some elite dungion areas, due to the armor and weapos available in the game, theres not a whole lot of reasons to go into them. Armors created from these areas dont contain any better stats (only a different look) and while melee will find some great weapons, most casters have found the best weapon combos can be created from uncommon items with specific mods (enchantments) applied to them. And there is very little vanity in GW. With only 6ish sets of armor, most classes have limited looks except for what ever color combination they choose to dye their armors at. And weapons are not visable in towns nore can people view others inventory (inspect), so that uber weapon you just got wont be seen by most people.

Also each Expansion of guild wars maintains itself as a new game (new continents that you can travel between if you own the other guild wars expansions) each one carrys a full price tag of $50. But I guess thats still not bad when that comes with a subscription for life (or close to it). Unlike a game like WoW, once you buy GW, you can leave and come back to it when ever you want.

Performance wise, Guild Wars is MUCH better, while providing just as good graphics. WoW uses tons of unique textures (wich is why, while low poly, it still looks good) and it is a ram hog, not really playable on a system with less then 1 gig of ram. Also its LoD engine makes hills and structures in the horizon lower poly. Guild Wars can play nicely in 512megs of ram and performance is great thanks to distant land actually turning into a bitmap (1 poly, it looks funny when it transitions between the two, and the bit map does appear lower res, but on the flipside this creates a neat "depth of focus" effect) and an overall fast engine makes the game look and run well on lower specs. Oh yea, and GuildWars maintains the best file system ever. Aside from the executible, the data in the game is maintained in ONE global file, and requires NO reinstallation. Reformated computer? Want to copy it to another computer or your laptop? Just copy the directory, run, and your off! You can also log into the game alot faster then WoW, and you can jump from one town to the next by clicking its location on the map (no time spent running around, or looking for a mage. You do of course need to actually VISIT the towns before you can port to them on the map).

Any questions about the 2, just ask. While I havnt touched much in the elite dungions in GW, I have finished every mission %100. In WoW, I have a lvl 60 priest who raids end game, and a mage on a pvp server.

there is no option for neither one of those games.

WoW- fun while it lasted. easy quests, easy instances, easy game. its the beginners MMORPG..there is NOTHING difficult about the game. everything in this game = time, NOT SKILL. want to conquer naxx? gear up in ZG/AQ/MC/BWL etc..skill isnt required, just time..would only take a few months

only requirements are time & the right numbers of each class...thats it. and for PVP..BGs took the fun out of it..now its just mindless grinding to get GM so you can get GM items. the game is TOO easy..you can SOLO to 60..only times you NEED to group are instances, which are NOT required to progress.

GW- never saw the fun in the game..my limited hands on experience in this game lasted until i was in an instanced area..unless im grouped before i leave town..i lost interest there.

    pb,out.

World of warhammercraft? Looks like another wow clone.
I know DF won't be popular, it appeals to a (superior) niche crowd, while WoW (and WAR) are just made to appeal to the (carebear) masses, and get people addicted, for maximum profit.

Also, for anyone who like GW pvp, Fury looks to be promising; more like a GW done right (better combat, no pve). Check it out. (Still in development though, like DF, I'll probably play whichever come out first or both maybe).

Getting to end game in WoW? That can easily be done in a couple dedicated weeks, sure if you only play casually WoW would take a few months, that's if you play VERY slow, but if you play FFXI like that you'll never get to end game at all.

If you're talking about beating all the end-game of WoW has to offer, then an FFXI equivalent would be 5+ years seeing as it hasn't even been done yet even by crazily dedicated players.

For one thing, there's no way to know it'll be bug-ridden until release.
Also, the devs have plenty of money, plus less people playing=less money to maintain anyways. And, the devs actually care about making a good game, their ideal game, the mmo they've always wanted. They're actually focusing on making good gameplay, that's fun to play, not just maximizing profit.

But... It's all subjective, to each his own; have fun in your endless grind-fest.
I suppose WoW or WAR would be better for people who have no skill and/or life as you are rewarded for time played, not skill, so even those who suck can pwn all teh noobs they want, if they're obsessed enough to grind it all out.

reiza, dedicated weeks in wich you know how to play your class well, know the quest, know all the best leveling spots.. know what to kill...

duh.. Even in EQ weve seen level 60's leveled up within a week.. of course the character is playd like 24 hours by multiple people.

Its entirly possible to level up a character quickly in any game, but no way in hell will you do it on your first try.

I have played WOW, not GW, but I have downloaded GW in game movies that people produced.

WOW, is all about getting to 60 and instancing with 40 members to gain items.
It takes 1 month to hit lvl 60. Yes you need lots of time to play this game. Roughly 3-6 hours for instances.

Things I do like about the game is the graphics, I came from Lineage 2, and went to WOW and I thot the graphics would be worse and childesh...its not, it is quite professional looking and well organized.

The PVP system is perfect!, Blizzard continuously improves balance in the game, (I was a warrior and was well equipped) and PVP is only half of WOW.

Things i don't like about WOW, is the PVE system. I don't like gathering 40 players and organize all that. Takes to much time and effort and is just annoying to get everyone on Ventrilo or TS.

Another thing i don't like is the time you have to put in, i don't like sitting here for hours doing an instance that is best in timing for 40 memebers.

Yes you do need a lot of skill and strategy in the game to kill bosses and stuff, and a heck of amount of skill for PVPing.

2 things in my opinion that would make the game more fun for me, is to have 5 player or 10 player being the MAX instance size. Since the size is 10 players, the instances should be more strategic and shorter. I really don't like sitting in an instance for 3 hour straight.

I say make instances do able in 1 hour so we can get back to our REAL life.
By having the MAX instance size at 5-10 players, these players could be your friends that you know in real life, plus a few extra that are nice in game.

AS for Guild Wars, the PVP element is good, from what i saw, the PVE system is boring looking, i don't think it has much appeal, like WOW.

Guild Wars is popular because of the no monthly fees, which everyone likes.

    CONCLUSION
All in all both are good games, if you have lots of time and want a great experiance, go and play WOW. But if you want a game in which you can allocate time to play and stop when you want go to Guild Wars or even Titan Quest.

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

Whenever I play an MMO, I always research what I'm supposed to do before attempting it, I would do that and understand what I was supposed to do, so yes, a couple weeks, even with research you'll still takes months to end-game in FFXI, there simply is no competition as to which is bigger, longer and harder in general, except of course population.

    EDIT:

Just to be clear, I like WoW, it's a very good game, it's just simply nowhere near as hard as FFXI.

Yea, because a Naxxaramus clear is EZ mode! Winning consistantly in PvP against skilled and geared opponents is EZ mode!

Your argument sounds like every 12 year old bnet kiddie that plays the game. WAH WAH .. I don't want to put a little of time into the game to get better! WAH WAH I have horrible gear and get beat by people who play more than me! WAH WAH.

Every MMO is a time based grind .. that is how they are DESIGNED. If you get all of the fun out of the game in one evening, then nobody will want to keep playing. MUDflation .. it happens in EVERY single MMO that wants to sustain a community of players. Think Darkfall will be different? Think again. If you want instant action without a grind play RTS or FPS. MMO's are a whole different animal. Sounds like you can't handle the beast.

I still don't get why people compare WoW and GW, One is an MMORPG the other is a PORPG.... its not the same thing.....

WoW You play to get to max level. Guild wars the fun doesn't start till lvl 20. heck the game doesn't even really start till then.

I've enjoyed Guild Wars a lot this past year. I've taken four characters all the way through the game, and enjoyed learning different skills. Haven't really had time to play Factions much. I'd highly recommend GW for RPG fans...you can do a lot of it by yourself, but there are some times where you need to find a group - and that can be really good, or really bad :)

I'm sure I'd like WoW as well, but don't want to chance the addiction...

I bought Guild wars before i bought WOW, i love them both but i hate the amount of time you need to play just to get to the next level in WOW. I play WOW more because its alot more open and free, when they say massive multiplayer..it really is!!. although love GW more [i think] because the quest system is top notch unlike WOWs which is linear and boring as hell and i love GWs graphics...but..WOW is big, its open, its free, theres always someone to chat to if you dont want to go out grinding or leveling like a madman, theres alot more to do and of course the graphics are user friendly [cartoony] which is always a plus. If blizzard and GW got together and made a game it would rule, WOWs pure package of gaming and GWs quest system = BRILLIANCE.

a game im looking forward to is WARHAMMER ONLINE, it look so freakin good, check it out, you can pick up war tropheys off the battle field like enemies skulls, badges, spikes etc and put them on your armour so if you collect enough skulls you can have a big mountain of them on your back and look badass XD. there is no battleground like WOW, its all in the area, no loading or anything, wars can spill into your hometowns and destroy your village. another great aspect is the seiges, you can get all your players on your side go fight on the field, break down the enemies town gates with rams and fire, go threw the back entrance and steal the king who you can take back to your town and put in stocks and totally demolish their citys and raid all the houses for items like gold and wood etc.

like WOW but darker and BRITISH XD

Wiggi, hehe, GW was created by ex-wow team members. ;)

Not sure what you ment by the quest system. WoW has far more quest and has tiered quest. Since wow actually has good itemization, armor and weapons, you actually get usefull stuff from quest, and even the chance to get rare blue and epic purple items. The best GWs can do is trash uncommon and almost every single quest item I have liquified. Theres a bunch of epic and legendary quest now for end game in WoW too. All of GWs best stuff is droped.

I like GWs on my laptop cause its easier to play at lower levels. I can use henchment and solo while laying on my couch and if I die because my response times suck without a mouse, theres no one to ***** at me. ;) WoW is tricky cause you generaly need to group and if you suck cause your relaxing and just using the keyboard, word gets around. You got a rep to maintain. ;)

i mean the quest system on GW is more interesting, the quests themselves have an actual story, in WOW there is one clip at the start and thats it. in GW the story is indepth and intense, WOW is kill 10 of this, collect 20 of these, no story, no depth BUT WOW is still what ill play more, unless GW drop the realistic graphics and add professions and a huge free open world like WOW, but they wont and shudnt. as i said i love both games, both have good points and bad points. :D

thats the only thing about WOW that lets it down, theres loads of quests, but their all pretty much the same. WOW gets everything else spot on though.

A thing I hate about the WoW questing system, especiallt the collect xx amount of xxx from xx. Sometimes the drop rate is amazingly low, like 5%, I would think after killing 400+ and only collecting 20/30 would the NPC go, "Yea......I think you've killed enough" :p

wiggi, err, while the collect this or kill this quest are pretty static, there are a ton of linked quest wich feature a story behind it. Usually the quest that are tiered (ie you have to complete a previouse quest to get it) are story driven. Some notable quest are wailing caverns leaders of the fang (yields a nice lowbie blue staff/sword), bingles missing supplies in loch modan, summoning of hakkaer in ST. Usually any epic item has a story driven quest to it like the priest staff from MC, the legendary swords, and the 2 quest mounts for pali and lock.

Heck, some quest actuallly do nothing BUT tell a story. I think I recall a part in the onyxia key where you had to listen through a couple pages before continuing on.

Did you get your quest entirly from sharing? Anyways, WoW blows GW away in quest. While GW is def a big step away from the cryptic days of everquest (oh god.. how did we live with such a crapy system), the lack of any rare or epic quested items and large boss encounters in the regular world (Missions didn't have quest you got outside, rather you had a main quest and a bonus quest to discover and complete inside the mission, and mission do usualy have a boss encounter of some type) mean no epic storylines like WoW, nore any need for linked quest. In GW, no quest requires a previouse one to be complete, I think.

wiggi, a clip? Yea I've only seen one time where the camera was taken out of your control.. in uldamen... but considering thats one of the biggest pluses in halflife 1/2, I cant say its a bad thing. If they can do cinima events without needing to pull your camera.. it means theyve done one better.

Actually not true at all, the GW team was created by ex-Diablo2 team members. None of them had anything to do with WoW. GW took a very Diablo2 approach to everything they did while sprinking in MMO elements. If you had ex-wow team members, I think GW would've turned out much better than it has.

digi, what I read was it was of team members who wanted a more PVP centered game. In wich I think it turned out great. Keep in mind wow was in beta for like 2 years... so it could have gotten original wow team members that left after its main development.

Taken directly from Guild Wars official website:

ArenaNet is a wholly owned subsidiary of NCsoft Corporation, and was founded in March 2000 by some of the key members of the creative teams behind Blizzards game series Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo, as well as the Battle.net gaming network. You can find a lot of good information about the company at our website: www.arena.net.

Fun fact, World of Warcraft began it's planning and development in January of 2001. The first trademarks of the logo and name were filed in August of 2001.

you cant say WOW has as much of a structured story as GW because it doesnt, from the get go GW has you in a deep imersive story, from the get go with WOW it has you in a deep imersive gameplay lol i cant say iv ever seen much of a story in WOW apart from being told what you are when its blatently obvious because you ****ing picked it XD lol just joking. i dunno whats the better game, its hard to decide. i dont like the way people compare them, i mean they are completely different games. i played GW to death and it really doesnt seem to have much replayablity unlike WOW because you can just fart around and do whatever you like for quite some time. this week ill get WOW installed again and start fresh with a horde this time, cant wait. probably tomorrow, lappy comes WHOO.
