Hello all,
Right i am leaving for Univeristy soon and being that i won't be taking my xbox 360, i will be doing PC gaming instead while there. Problem being though that online gaming is out of the question since the network there is set up to disallow internet gaming, and there is a daily usage limit.
In short i want games that will keep me going on them for a long time in single player without me completing them quickly or getting bored.
My main decision is RTS games, i am trying to decide between, Civilization IV, Sins of a Solar Empire and World in Conflict. I only really want to buy 1 of these, but i want the one which is just best overal for gameplay time and overall enjoyment. Advice?
My Second decision which is more of a definite for getting is Mass Effect because i know that to be a good game with a long gameplay time, but for some reason Amazon.co.uk has bad reviews for it...

Of those three games, I'd go with Civ 4 (with expansions)
-
for RPG you should definitely consider
TES4: Oblivion
Mass Effect
and for RTS/TBS you should consider
Civ 4
Company of Heroes
Warhammer 40k
Age of Mythology
you should skip World in Conflict as it's more geared towards online play. you'll soon realize how ridiculously shallow the gameplay is in single player. every game massive entertainment has made turned out this way. but if you like nice visuals and tons of explosions then i guess it's not too bad. i got bored of it after first 6 or so missions and stopped playing. online is alright if you play with friends though. -

I played Age of Mythology a few years ago as well but i think i have played that to death really and i never thought to much to the single player, without playing a standard deathmatch.
What about Sins of a Solar empire then? I quite liked the idea of a Space based RTS. What is that like compared to Civilisation? -
I have to say mass effect and oblivion

I would prefer Mass Effect over Oblivion because i prefer Sci-Fi to standard Fantasy, i am more in question of what is now the other 2 games:
Sins of a Solar Empire or Civilization IV and of course reasons for and against each, so i can make the decision. -
I hear sins is galactic civilization meets homeworld. i didn't really like galciv but enjoyed homeworld. i prefer earth games over space games so... and civ iv is just civ so you can't go wrong with that. also civ 4 is completely revamped so it'll feel like a completely new game but with same empire building mechanics.
if i had to recommend a game, it would be Oblivion and Civilization 4. -
i would strongly recommend Oblivion, i'm well over 100 hours and still just about half way through, while Mass Effect only took me about 45 hours to get all the main and side quests done. some strategy games like Civ4 is a good choice too, but you'll probably get bored after while since you'll always be playing against computers.

Anything about Sins of a Solar Empire though?

Most I have talked to liked Sins, if it's your bag. As far as Civ 4 goes, if you get it you get it, if not you suck (like me). The game has crazy depth and great replayability, as well as a demand for skill. I probably played it 20 hours or so (single player) and like I said, I was horrible at it. If I was actually accomplishing anything, I would have played much longer.

Most I have talked to liked Sins, if it's your bag (being in space and all). I hear the scale of battles can be great and the UI is well planned. As far as Civ 4 goes, if you get it you get it, if not you suck (like me). The game has crazy depth and great replayability, as well as a demand for skill. So if it's a presentation you understand and enjoy you will be playing for many hours. I probably played it 20 hours or so (single player) and like I said, I was horrible at it. And I truly ruined this thread. Sorry all. How I do love my cheap Linksys router. If you like space go for Sins.

Thank you for the Information, i think i will get Sins then.

NOOOOOOOOOO
Civ 4 is probably one of the best games ever made. I can never put it down. First make a thread saying "Civ4, worthy of my money" and i promise you, you will have tons of people going nuts about it. -
Like I tried to say, CIV4 is an amazing game if it's what your looking for. Can't really be classified as a RTS though and I think he was leaning that way.

Well i have just ordered Sins of a Solar empire, so i will let you know what i think of it once i have played a game or two
-
Enjoy it man!

I vote Oblivion, even if it isn't your exact cup of tea. Great game.
-
Personally I don't like Sins, only played the demo though. It was just all so weird, didn't feel naturally...
Maybe I should've just stayed with it for longer, was too complex for me and too much going on at once... yeah it probably is just me xD
Oblivion= THE game that keeps you going 100+ hours, never had another game that did that. First week I had that game (was in the vacation) I played 77 hours, that's 11 hours a day... Yeah, I was young and not so sociable as I am now... I wouldn't be able to do such thing nowadays, but I'm just making a point... if you can play it THAT long without getting bored... then it's gotta mean something... -
Mass Effect is a great game with a fantastic story, I wouldn't put it as long, for a RPG, since I managed to do three play throughs in a week (a 85%, a 100%, and a story run through on hardcore) and it clocked in around 40 total hours. But I still recomend you to get it.
C&C 3 is a pretty good RTS game I think, I've been playing it on and off for a good 2 and half weeks now and am barely half way through (I'm also in college btw). -

Especially since RTS stands for Real Time Strategy, Turn Based Strategy is what Civ4 is really classified as mentioned above.
-
Ok whatever, i've always seen TBS's as a type of RTS

Which games?
