I know this varies between games, but in general which settings take use up the most resources?

I guess what im looking for is what to turn down first before i sacrifice the graphics too much.

    textures
    shadow detail
    anti aliasing
    screen resolution

Theres prob more so feel free to add them.

    Thanks

Anti-aliasing easily takes up the most, followed by shadow detail. With AA, the GPU basically takes straight corners and makes them look smoother by reducing them to several straight corners; the calculation has to be done recursively, frame by frame.

haha funny you mention gears of war, thats the game that promted me to ask this question.

I had it on max settings and was getting 25-30 fps. I turned the shadows to low and turned post processing (or something like that) to default and now its running at 60 fps.

What exactly is the processing setting, ive seen it on another game before. I dont know which setting to pick vivid, intense, default, or none?

Well, it had some micro stutters when loading new areas, and ArmageddonAsh you should be fine, i'm running it FUll details, everything max, at 62 FPS (since the game is locked at that framerate)

and 1 more thing, i thought you had SLI 8800gTX?

Hmm, can't see why anyone would think that. The game ran pretty smooth, (over 30fps) completely maxed out in 1920x1200 on my previous sager 5791 with an 8700m GT, without a problem, and my old 8800GT desktop ran it perfect 60FPS+ all maxed out in 1920x1080. The game just felt a bit too easy to me though, and since I'd beaten it on insane 3 times in COOP on the xbox360, then playing it on the PC got boring fast because it was just too easy with a kb&m. I never noticed any bugs though..
