I'm considering waiting for the MSI GS70 Stealth or buying the MSI GT70 barebone from XOTICPC. Both builds have one fan, the gs70 being smaller will it be louder/hotter? I don't really care that much about heat, I care about noise. So for example if I'm playing starcraft 2 wol on medium will the gs70 be louder or will the gt70 be louder? Thank you in advanced

By the naming convention I'd imagine the GS70 should have a revamped "stealth" like cooking design, akin to what ASUS did moving from the G51Vx series (infamous for overheating and loud fan noise) to the now adopted stealth fighter design they incorporated into the G53SW and later models (G750 included)

That doesn't answer my question, are you saying the 765m is cooler/more quiet than the 780m?

It should be. 765m runs cool, like < 70C cool even when fully taxed. The 780m can run into the 80's.

Agreed, that ginormous "Gaming Series" logo on the lid is rather ugly and mars an otherwise nicely designed thin 0.85" (21.8mm) chassis.

Ok, thanks all. Now that I know the 765m is cooler I have to determine which to get the P35K and the MSI gs70 stealth. Or should I wait for the gtx800 series to come out?

The 800 series is over a year away, but by that time, maybe you'll wanna wait for the 900 series..... all kidding aside, buy whatever you want, the 700 series has only been out for a month or 2. In terms of the fans being loud, the msi gt70 will only be loud if you put the turbo fan on. The only reason why you would turn the turbo fan on is when you're playing an intensive game that would put your gpu into the 80s such as crysis 3. For the most part the GT70 is quiet and with the 780m, it is one hell of a performer. The 780m is almost 80-90 percent faster than a 765m in most applications/games. The price tag comes with the increased performance.

Yes, the GT70 will run hotter and as a result, louder than the GS70. That being said, it is also close to 1.7-2x faster than the GS70 like elmyo said. You mention SC2 which is a fairly CPU intensive game. Both notebooks have one fan right? They both sit over the GPU which means the CPU gets secondary cooling. If you are playing SC2 on ultra for hours, it is going to heat up the CPU (considering SC2 is terrible at multi core) and could throttle. Is there a reason you are limiting your choice to these two? If you have to get one of these, go for the GS70 but imo neither are good choices. The GS70 is just a bit better for your priorities.

What do you recommend then? I do game a lot, I need to use this for work (post production), and I travel out of state at least 40 times a year. Thank you in advance

Going by the above quoted statement, I'd recommend any machine with the 780m if you can afford it because nothing in what you said above requires a quiet laptop. However, your original post makes noise a priority. Could you tell us why you need the laptop to be quiet?

Also, your threads in the WNBSIB section indicate you still aren't sure about your preferences. Finally, you say that people sometimes judge you by the way you look and if I were such a person, I'd probably judge someone with a GS70 in a negative way. That's just my opinion. The bottom line is, you can't have it all. You would need to compromise somewhere. And in my opinion, what's holding back a good laptop suggestion is your spartan noise considerations. Do you have an upper limit in decibels?

how do you guys know that the gs70 will be cooler or quieter than the gt70? Temperature and noise depends on the cooling system.... kinda hard to know how good the cooling system in the gs70 will be since its not even out yet.

The gtx780m will put out more heat than the gtx765m, but the gt70 will probably have better cooling than the gs70 as well.

The GE series from MSI doesn`t have the greatest cooling system. One small fan, one small exhaust, little copper used, notebook is thin that trap heat inside.
They also run pretty loud and is hot.
I don`t see why GS70 should be better since its built on the same principle as GE series.

GT series however is much better. One big fan that move more air than the two fans together you find in Clevo/Asus/Alienware machines, two exhausts, a lot of copper used that bridge CPU and GPU, the notebook itself is thick that leave room for the heat to build up before its removed by fan.
They don`t make much noise, only if you force the fan to go on overdrive with the turbo fan mode button. Temperature wise you should expect around 80C for both GPU and CPU.

I just can't concentrate when there is a fan making jet engine noises. And sometimes I go to the library to study and work because it's quiet there. Thanks all for feedback

The fan on a 780m machine is not going to be going nuts unless you are putting load on it aka playing a game. Which I assume you will not be doing in the library when you are meant to be studying. Don't compromise on performance when one of your deciding factors is playing games and there is no risk of the computer being loud during normal use.

Also, I am not sure you can hear those over the video game. Especially if you wear a headset during gaming. I can hear my laptop's fans when I'm gaming and if I take the headset off but only if I try to listen for them. In other words, they aren't noticeable unless you are specifically looking to hear the sound.

I take back what I said. After looking through the MSI notebooks, I found out that the new GS70 Stealth have dual fan.
So I think it will be more quiet and cooler than GT70.

Looks like a beast of a machine, eager to see the reviews that might remove my bias against MSI after a terrible customer support experience that went on for nearly 2 months
