well some of my favorite games of all time were scary horror games. I LOVED Resident evil 4, resident evil 5 was a little run and gun though, I tried to play dead space but stopped a about 3/4 through when I reinstalled vista and lost all my data :(

I played the Fear 2 demo and I thought it was pretty scary but I would like to play the first fear before i play that one. I have also seen dooM 3 which also looks pretty cool.

In your opinion which one is scarier and pls explain why :D

Doom 3 the first 3/4 of the game is terrifyingly scary like I have seen in no other game.... even if you do cheat and get a gun mounted flashlight like I did... it is an intense experience to say the least, me and a friend played it together and literally fought over who didn't have to play! lol

Personally, I found FEAR (not FEAR 2) to be scarier. Doom 3 just seemed a little to been-here-done-that to be truly scary. FEAR is a little different. Playing that at night in the dark with the sound up was definitely scary.

Plus, I enjoyed the gameplay in FEAR more than in Doom 3 :)

The original condemned (criminal origins) is one of the scariest games out there. It's also made by Monolith, the same guys behind FEAR.

i don't think FEAR was scary at all.

what ruined it was the "unknown source" thing that would show up on the screen when something scary was about to happen, thus, ruining the scare.

For scariness, Doom 3 wins hands down. If you weren't playing with surround sound or a good set of stereo headphones, then you weren't playing it. The sound in the game made ALL the difference. It kept you on the edge, at least the frist 2/3, then it turned into a ridiculous fragfest.

FEAR was scary only at the beginning, but overall the gameplay and storyline were much better. I thought it was well done. I never finished Fear 2, became way too much generic shooter for me.

I say FEAR. Doom 3 was fun, but it's just a blatant in-your-face horror fest, and you kind of know what to expect around every blind corner. Also, the sheer darkness of the levels really killed the experience for me. What good is touting the best graphics engine (at the time) when you couldn't see anything?

As far as FEAR goes, I feel it's more psychological, more suspenseful, and while it doesn't rely on disfigured zombies and other horrors to scare you (like Doom offers), it does offer one creepy little girl running around eviscerating people in one shot.

FEAR I played and finished. Good fun.

Doom 3 scared the **** out of me early on the game and have never finished it.

Dead Space? Meh. Walk in the park compared to the other two.

I voted Doom 3...but it was more of a startling scary while I think F.E.A.R. was more of a suspenseful scary...

Sound, which I think is a huge element of horror, was 'scarier' on Doom 3, in my opinion, which is why it got my vote...sound made the 'surprise' moments scary...after a while though, it was the same trick over and over like Friday the 13th...

F.E.A.R. just had a flatout freaky story and a lot of the 'scariness' for me actually occurred after the game...more pyschological and less blunt...more like the The Exorcist *shudder*

And I know it's not directly to the question, but it never gets mentioned as a 'scary' game...Ravenholm in Half-Life 2 'scared' me worse than both of the offered choices...

And the only part of Resident Evil 4 that really 'scared' me was that Aliens-like thing down in the sewers...it was much less scary the second or third time through with the unlimited ammo rocket launcher...I'll take that back...those damn shuffling, snuffling things with the hot spots scared me, too...

My heart is beating so fast hahah

Im playing with these high quality headphones in a dark room, I actually feel like I am the person in the game

But the thing is, dead space only made me feel like this at its intense moments, this game....ahhh the sounds really add to the game have the time Im jumpin at the creeks and stuff of the machinary

Time to drink some coke and take a break lol

Well youtube pretty much ruined it for me...

Typed in 'Fatal Frame' and up comes 'Scariest Room Ever!!!! (Fatal Frame)' and it's a clip of the game with the girl in a room full of dolls and a webcam on some dude screaming '?' into the mic...

I laughed my way through the whole thing...it may have been genuinely scary without the dude...same thing happened to me with Blair Witch Project...saw the SNL skit before I saw the movie and I couldn't stop laughing when I finally saw the movie...

Doom 3 and Dead Space both subscribe more to the Western flavour of horror; in other words, they employ scare tactics which run the gamut from having something appear suddenly, to having something appear suddenly, to... having something appear suddenly. Woot.

Fear on the other hand, well... alright, maybe not quite the other hand. Perhaps halfway up the arm, or possibly around the opposite shoulder. There's a little more atmosphere in it. Kinda leans more towards what I'd consider typical Asian horror fare. Tries to build a scarier atmosphere, with not quite as many instant shocks. The game equivalent would probably be something like... the early Silent Hills?

Doom 3 scary? Seriously? Come on how many times can you be scared by "Que the lights, que the imp/zombie spam/angry duck routine" Rinse repeat till a lacklustre ending? Doom 3 scary!?!?!! What's scary is people actually think that was scary, let alone a good game. I felt like I had played the whole thing before in Doom 2. FEAR is scarier than that and a much better game. Dead Space is better than that. Also try Cryostasis and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl (under ground is pretty creepy).

The camera control took me out of the immersion of Dead Space.

For me, as I've said before (and I'll throw one more in the mix):

    Doom 3 > System Shock 2 > FEAR > Dead Space

good summary, one reason i don't find western horror scary at all, stuff popping up every once a while to me is a surprise, not scary-scary. however, the suspense that build up from asian horror can sometimes hit the wrong note and it does not affects you.

Doom 3 was a blunt in your face, scary game. Never actually finished it, which is a shame... FEAr as mentioned previously, was more of a "atmopshere" creepy. Better story, better gameplay, but not as scary as Doom 3 IMO.

Now Dead Space scared the sh#t out of me. Might of been due to the big arse screen and good surround sound, but jeez, had to put it down every 30 mins and have a smoko to calm my nerves lol. One of the biggest things with Dead Space though is you don't have a big arsed rocket launcher to punich the nasties, you have to use things like blow torches to chop off the baddies legs etc.

    Scary stuff!!

Condemned: Criminal Origins would be the scariest game I've ever playerd.

F.E.A.R wasn't scary at all(well, at least 90% of it) and I haven't played Doom 3 for more than 5 minutes so I can't really compare.

    Heh.

I find myself almost immune to "startles". My personal theory is that it's because my reflexes are kinda slow; by the time I realise what's going on and that there's a monster screaming into my face or something, the moment has passed, and all I get to do is go... "Oh."

    Asian horror, however... mmmmmm...

I remember Doom3 had a part or two that made me jump. The ambient sounds were very, very creepy.
Either game make sure you have a headset with a surround sound it truly will immerse you.
Play at night when you are the only one in the house= FUN!

first off, "based on a true story" means "not true in the slightest sense"

second, this game was based off urban legends from Japan, not truth by any means.

I finished Doom 3 twice a while ago, and it just become like a grind. Its too predicatble and the monsters just dont become scary anymore. At least FEAR mixes things up not only with the monsters and settings, but the actual mood of the game through the japanese horror, people arent as familier with it in the west and so i think FEAR is more effective in scaring people.
