i just bought doom 3 and expansion pack for £4. bargin! not installed it yet, but ive just finished FEAR and i have to say it could have done with some more scary moments. there were a couple where i crapped myself, but i wanted more. should i get the 2 expansion packs?
do you think dead space would run on a 9200/8400? i could run fear on high at native res at 20-30fps. COD2/4 run near maxed too.

Well I have FEAR and have played only the Doom 3 demo. For FEAR it was (for me) like 1 very scary moment and some other 'interesting scenes', but nothing so scary. Doom 3 seemed more in the scary-horror theme than FEAR.

Oh, definitely. System Shock is one freaky game. Old school, so he lower graphics take a little bit out of the shocks, but, damn, having those worm-zombies pop out of the closet made me jump a few times. (There are no set spawn points for enemies)

Add that to the messages from the Many and SHODAN... brrrr...

In my opinion, we shouldn't compare the scariness of the two games because they are scary in different ways. Doom 3 is all about monsters jumping out due to tradeoff with the flashlight, and can get old pretty fast. (ie, dark corner in the room, expect something to happen, etc). Fear on the other hand is scary in its atmosphere, in a psychological way. For example, the game makes you wonder if you really want to walk into the room with the flashing celling lights while tempting you with a med pack on the desk. The Fear dev did a good job creating tension through out the game imo, and not jumping out at you scares. I would say a better comparison would be doom 3 vs. dead space.

We all get scared by different things anyway, so I don't think you have anything to be ashamed of there mokylim. I remember being scared watching Labyrinth as a child. Mind you, David Bowie does still scare me I think; it's just the thought of him in those skin tight leggings which makes me feel sick....!

For me it's the thought of being hunted... games where I can't really fight back like Penumbra scare me the most, your helpless for the most part... just make sure you bring a friend and it should be fun though ;)

The thing about Doom is that you dont see where your enemies are , unlike in Fear . When you see your enemies you feel like a hunter and not being hunted .

I myself consider Doom quite scary . I havent played Penumbra or Condemned but from what ive seen in the videos those 2 are pretty scary and suspenseful .

I will second AvP2 as a scary game . Playing as a predator or an alien was fun , its when you played as a human you would start getting shivers .

Another thing people dont mention is lightning and sounds in Doom . They create that unique scary atmosphere throughout the game . Fear has some nice dim corridors as well but thats about it .

To be fair, Doom 3 does get a bit scary when for example you hear those ghostly voices and the walls beginning pulsing with those demonic symbols. The monsters jumping out are more of a fright than anything else.

    Neither were scary.....

Fear i actually laughed at the scare tactics and doom was just satanic/demonic... not really scary... (that being said i did love the original fear)

Penumbra is a psycological horror game, that was pretty intense at times, but again, i have yet for a game to scare me

I would vote for Doom 3, for a very simple reason (played both games)...

Darkness playes a much greater role in the gameplay, I remember finding myself wandering around with a flashlight, with monters popping around at you randomly, while I didn't find FEAR particularly scary... It just feels a bit more abstract (the little girl hunting you around al of the time, and you of course know that every cutscene you are going to survive ;))

    Offtopic alert:
I haven't played the first F.E.A.R. but I played F.E.A.R. 2 and that was not scary, if anyone's played it, (I played it on PS3) notice that you get a checkpoint before every firefight or every "scary sequences" so if I just shot a whole bunch of dudes then I see that little auto save go off, it's guaranteed that the next sequence is a scary sequence, and vice versa, so it's very predictable and the two elements were not blended in at all. I don't know if F.E.A.R. 1 was like that so I didn't vote yet.

Doom was scary because the 2 elements were blended in well, you'll see a vent break open and it'll startle you, and then there'll be a monster sneak up behind you or something like that. There were also other moments of 'panic' I had that I won't go into without spoilers but let's just say it involves being teleported somewhere and losing certain somethings and then having to fight certain monsters right afterwards.

Hahahahaha... When I was 8 I was playing Doom 2, Now that was scary.... I preferred playing Fear, as Eastern horror gets to you when you least expect it (Watch the original Grudge, not the Americanised version.... I dare you), whereas Doom 3 was gore, blood and shadows. It wasn't quite as scary as it should have been, Once your beyond the boogyman eating you part at the start.
You adapt and the game was simply became "I know your hiding around here somewhere Mr Imp demon... Come out come out whereever you are... OMG PINKY!!!! RUN!!!!" not from being scared of course(or was it?). TBH at face value Doom was freakier at first but in the long run, FEAR gets to you like any good eastern horror should!!

Ahhh I played fear and there was just an occasional scare and it was never until the end a survival issue... I wan't really scared becuase I knew Alma wasn't going to try and kill me. Now I started playing fear 2, but I'm waiting for my M17x so I have some games to play on it... so far it has been alot better than the first

I don't get why people say that dead space is scary. I wasn't even fazed by it-which is saying a lot because i get scared at games like half life 2 and fallout3. I just didn't find dead space even slightly scary. =/

Half Life 2 was disturbing, while doom 3 was outright ridiculously scary. I was playing it in december again on a 46 inch LCD tv and with the volume up, I died. Especially in the beginning. Not having the flashlight on at all time really scares you :(

Lol I got the flashlight Mod and it was still scary as hell... for me it's scary becuase they make you think it is there the entire time.. where as in fear stuff just pop's out of nowhere, or alma flashes in and out, and then it isn't scary at all fighting soldiers... where doom is total immersion!

I dunno, after about 30 minutes of Doom 3 it wasn't really scary anymore, their tricks were all the same. You enter a new room, lights are going to turn off and there are things behind you. You see some ammo, things are going to show up behind you (and the lights may flicker/turn off). etc... etc.. (yeah I finished half the game, but after the first while it wasn't that bad).

Fear 2 really isn't that scary imo.

I'd give Doom 3 the slight edge, just because of the lack of lighting. Kinda freaky to have a gunbattle where you have to rely on the light from muzzle flashes to see your target. The scare tactics are only effective for so long, until you can almost predict that picking up that lone armour shard will spawn enemies. But once you get bigger and better weapons, the monsters are no longer that scary.

Fear was scary for a while, till I realized that Alma is more or less harmless. Once I knew that only the soldiers and ghosts can hurt me, the game became pretty much a standard fps.

Doom 3 was nothing but cheap tricks that got old quick, not that I didn't like the game. I would say that F.E.A.R was a tiny bit scarier, but the 'scary' moments last but a few seconds.

Anyone remember Thief 3's Shalebridge Cradle? Now that level was truly terrifying the first time I went through it without knowing what was around every corner or stairway.

Although not either of these 2 games one of the most intense moments in any game happened in Dead Space when you had to fight and escape from a monster that you couldn't kill. You could shoot and maim the monster and then had to run like hell while it regenerated. Once you got through a door or hatch and thought you were safe it would drop through the ceiling, I've played alot of games but that 10-15 minute sequence really stands out.

I agree. Another thing that stood out was the first time you walked over a body on the ground that you were sure was 100% dead only to see it rise up behind. The fight on the Valor with about 20+ Necromorphs all coming at you like a bat out of hell was notable as well because I was low on ammo and had to bash skulls in with my cutter to survive.

FEAR was a definite creep fest, as was Doom 3. There aren't too many scenes that I remember from the games except one incident in particular from FEAR. I had just gotten the game later in the day and had played until it started getting dark out, and there's a part where you slide down a ladder, but for a split second there's a shadow of Alma and some creepy sound effects. Oh man, I quick-saved and quick-turned off the game because I was really creeped out.

I didn't find either particularly scary.

Doom 3 was a tiresome series of monster closets. It startled me a few times but felt very cheap, like a mediocre haunted house exhibit.

FEAR has some atmospheric chills, but the little japanese girl schtick doesn't do much for me aside from making me feel mildly uncomfortable. (especially how FEAR 2 tries to sexualize alma, *shudder*)

Wow! Amazing how the polls are almost equal with one more vote needed for FEAR.

But hand down, I'd go for FEAR on full speakers (or headset) at night with dim-lights with nobody else at home but you...and Alma. Haha.

At the end of the day, it really comes down to what scares you more subjectively. If closet monsters/creatures freak you out more than ambient spooks and Japanese-style ghosts; then Doom is for you.

By the way, I can't wait for the Ju-On (or in America, the Grudge) game coming out for the Wii. It's for the freakin' Wii people! I mean, how much scarier can a game get with motion control involved. Imagine playing this thing on a plasma or HD screen.
