Hi all!
I thought that, rather than ask a lot of questions, see what you are thinking in terms of the perfect midrange notebook setup.
This would apply to the notebooks with screens between 14" and 15.4". After all, 17" laptops and up can be configured with juicier GPU:s.![]()

I voted for the core 2/7600. Im biased because I just like nvidia more. But the x1600 and 7600 are really almost identical, so which ever would be cheaper, but thats definitly the best option for best performance.
-
i picked the wrong one and should have picked 7600 c 2 duo not core duo.
the best configuration is the 14 inch a8js with the 512 mb 7700 and 2.0 ghz c2d 2.0
Im a long time nvidia user. The best thing I can say about them is they release the beta drivers days after a new game is released, a game such as doom or what have you, that make it go fast.
I dont want to give that up its been worth a lot to me over the years. -
That's quite easy
Core 2 Duo with either 7600 or 1600, also the refreshed versions 1700 or 7700 which seems to be the most powerful GPU in this range for now. -
core 2 duo w/ x1600...ATI > NVIDIA, ATI FTW, ATI ALL THE WAY!!!
-
i picked x1600 w/c2.
-
I'll take the 7600 / C2D.
In terms of Windows performance, the two cards are about equal. But when it comes to Linux performance, the ATi is left in the dust. -
I'm a fan of nVidia for their Linux and OpenGL support. Not to mention their drivers are better from everything I've ever heard. And Core 2 Duo smokes the competition in pretty much everything right now, so I voted accordingly. -

ATI X1600 + Core 2 Duo.
ATI X1600 > 7600Go. Easy choice.

go 7600 + C2D.
Although I'd be fine with x1600 + C2D. It comes down to whatever system fits your needs best in my opinion. -
Wow you guys are really geared towards the C2D. Is it really so much better?
-
C2D + X1600
Although theres almost no diff between the 7600 and x1600 on windows.
As for the C2D, Core Duos were noticably faster than the Turion X2's in normal benchmarks(i say benchmarks becuase you wouldn't notice much difference between the two during normal usage), but the Turion made up for it with 64-bit support. The C2Ds are a little faster than the Core Duo's (while maintaining similar power requirements) and also adds 64-bit support, so the Turion X2s are a little behind at the moment -
Objectively, Core 2 Duo is the best mobile CPU in the world for the time being, nothing more -
Also, it seems that the Radeon X1600 has majority. Interesting...
-
some people just think that ATI "sounds" better that's way -
-
Well, for Core 2 Duo vs Turion x2, I'm more of an Intel guy, so I like the Core 2 Duos. But technically speaking, they are the fastest processors around right now, both in desktops and laptops. This is not to say that AMD will not be able to counter, because I think they will, but then Intel will counter with something more powerful, and the cycle will continue. You just have to pick which one you prefer. Also, from everything I've seen, Intel processors usually have the better battery life and heat output.

got the 22nd vote for 7600+c2d
....the name geforce it self -
for the BEST performance in windows, it's ati x1600 with C2d
the x1600 is slightly better then the 7600 but if it costs even $50 more for the x1600, go with the 7600. the difference between them is tiny
everyone likes c2d cause its 5-10% faster then c1d and adds 64 bit support so it's somewhat future proof. it also trashes the x2 in benchmarks -
But if all you can afford is an X2, don't feel bad, they are still fantastic processors and you probably wont notice much difference in everyday use.
-
oops...I think I voted for 7600 + Core 2
I meant X1600 + Core 2
EDIT: Yup...sorry...crap. -
If there's a nvidia 7700 + core 2 duo then i ll go for that

ATI X1600 + AMD Turion X2 is what I prefer
but
I have an ATI X1600 + Intel Dual Core -
amd turion + x1600 would i prefer
-
Was going to pick the x1600 and C2D (because I like games, and the x1600 seems to do a sliver of a bit better in some of the games I most favor) but then I picked the 7600, because I run linux.
Which midrange 15.4" CPU + GPU gaming configuration would you prefer?
