Does the choice of operating system affect a lot to the overall performance of notebooks with Core Duo CPU? How about gaming performance? Which operating system should I chooce (XP Pro, Home or Media) for Core Duo gaming laptop?

If you are just going to game on your machine, you might as well go for the cheapest of the three, which is XP Home, as all three Windows XPs perform about the same. The only difference between the XP OSes is not performance based, but instead feature based. For example XP Professional has networking features which the other XPs don't have.

I would simply go with XP Home edition. Budding is right, there's no performance difference.

I personally prefer Media Centre, for the added features, but there is no real performance advantage. It does have the advantage of being the newest version of XP (with Update Rollup 2). A lot of times, there is little price difference between it and XP Home.
