...haven't played a computer game for years I thought of given it at try with a new strategic game of some sort...
Since I have lost complete track of what's hot and not I would like some ideas for which game I should go for...
I used to like games like Civilization, Warcraft etc. Not too much action but something with building cities and conquering...
Any suggestions?

WarCraft 3 - Frozen Throne (Though it is quite different than normal RTS games, the hero idea definitely gets your that conquering feeling when you play
) But still, Civ is still a good game, may be a little hard but I still find it fun. Age of Empires III is coming end of this year, and it is imo quite slow compared to its previous counterparts.

another good one is Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth
-
You could check out Age of Empires III, which just came out
-
Try Caesar 3 - its an old game, but one of the best strategy games...

Age og Empires III sure look cool. A lot have happened since I played the first version;-) I will get that!
Thanks

lol Caesar is, like, last DECADE man...
that said, I loved it too=)
But I'd suggest you wait for Civ4, slated for release Sept 2005 (hey, that's now!=) or go get Black & White 2...Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -

Rise of Nations is a ton of fun. Age of Empires III looks pretty good too. RoN is fast-paced and gets wilder as the game continues while AoE is slower paced and takes longer.
Strategy games by EA, Atari, and Blizzard I've never cared for. EA games are really tacky and childish and are all over this awards, medals, and stats crap. Atari games just don't seem finished. And Blizzard games all have major exploits (100 carriers/battlecruisers/flying zerg things in SC or 100 defensive tree things uprooted and moving around in WC3) plus the AI is overly precise. Microsoft and Nintendo currently make the best strategy games I think. -
I'm an avid Nintendophile, and I don't quite see where you're going by saying "Nintendo makes the best strategy games." Seeing that they've only released the Wars Series (and disputably the Fire Emblem series which is a similar thing), they haven't done much in this genre. Unless Pikmin counts, but that hardly classifies as RTS.
I agree that EA's RTS' aren't very good. Their latest one (forgot its name) was a rip off Starcraft and Warcraft with the Zerg like race and all the same features. Beautifully made engine, but the gameplay was all stolen and copied.
Blizzard still makes the best overall strategy games. All games will have their balancing issues, but if you go actual tournaments, that sort of stuff doesn't happen in reality (because there are always ways to counter them). If Blizzard games weren't that good, people wouldn't still be playing Starcraft en-masse (still tens of thousands logged on daily) 8 years later. I'm sure that any other series doesn't share that same level of support, and it's largely because Blizzard values the modding/map making community and hands down makes the best tools for those purposes. That's what keeps SC and WC3 going years past their supposed EOL.

Where's the fun in my cruisers vs. your carriers? WTF are the other units for? It ruins SC. That's all I normally saw when playing online. There's no strategy to that. And you could have 100 of the same units in AoE but I could have a more diversified lineup and there would be an element of strategy to be used. Your centurions are not carrying 6 mini-ships or one giant cannon that kills in one shot and both are usefull against anything and everything. You could rush me and I could pick your guys off one by one, flank, and surround them in a deathtrap no problem. Units have distinct advantages and disadvantages. It's balance and that's something Blizzard forgot about in SC. There isn't a counter to all those large ships except for more of the same large ships. It gets really boring very fast when almost every game results in these types of showdowns. You suck for turning it into an RTR (real time rush) rather than RTS. The lack of a maximum population limit is what killed SC for me.
Which strategic game?
