For HD video and photo editing and general computer use what card should I get in a Dell Precision M6700?

AMD FirePro M6000 Mobility Pro Graphics with 2GB GDDR5 - Included
    NVIDIA® Quadro® K3000M with 2GB GDDR5, a $200 upgrade
    NVIDIA® Quadro® K4000M with 4GB GDDR5, a $500 upgrade

I'll spend the extra money if its faster, but I don't want to waste money.

Am I better off spending the money to upgrade the processor?

    3rd Gen Intel Core i7-3740QM Processor 2.7GHz, 6M cache - Included
    3rd Gen Intel Core i7-3840QM Processor (2.8GHz, 8M cache - $300 upgrade

I could do both, but it would be pushing the budget.

    Thanks

What will you be needing/using It for(personal or work-related use) ? Will you be getting the ips monitor?

plus what software will you use, for some the FirePro will be on par or a bit faster than the k4000 ( pure OpenCL/GL based ) and others that are limited to using CUDA you will want the biggest quadro you can afford.

unless you are using cheap consumer editors the 3840 will not give a great speed increase, just a small bump of a few seconds here and there in renders.

We opted for a k5000m (which was a $1700 upgrade) with IPS display but this was (somewhat) as a desktop replacement and a workstation while traveling/on the move. If you're doing just personal work / messing around i would say that's a bit much.

I just use it for personal use. Editing lots of GoPro HD videos and photos. I currently use Power Director on my old work laptop a Dell Precisison M90 and its so slow.

I'm getting a new Dell Precision M7600 at work (overkill I know) and I just want to get the right upgrades so I can also use it for my videos when I bring it home. I'm in management not IT, so unfortunately computers aren't my strong suit.

If you suspect you might upgrade to Adobe Premiere in the future, go with an Nvidia card so you can benefit from CUDA. The k4000m is roughly equivalent to the 675m. A 680m or k5000m would be a little better for video editing, but it sounds like that would price it out of your budget.

And of course you want to get the best CPU you can afford for video editing and transcoding, but I don't think there is too much performance difference between the 3740QM and the 3840QM.

my 680 breezes through hd editing and rendering using power director pro 64bit. as far as i know its the fastest software out there at the moment. the 64bit software sure does make a noticeable difference compared to the standard power director. so if you can afford it the k5000m is the way to go.

Adobe dropped CUDA like it was a dirty bomb. And GPGPU hardware acceleration in video is overrated anyway. I would recommend he upgrade his CPU instead. A 7970M for example would have more than enough OpenCL power for him, since Adobe was smart to get rid of CUDA.

Powerdirector will not care which GPU you use one bit actually. in that case go with the FirePro

CUDA is still supported in Premier for NOW but the dev team is giving strong indications it is gone in 6.5 and we already see the OpenCL version of the MRE now, literally meaning any GPU but a gForce will work very well.

and Zymphad is correct ALL other adobe products have dropped CUDA as of CS 6.0

Agree, it's the fastest non professional editing and rendering software available.
I would be more concerned about getting a fast cpu and lots of ram more than an expensive gpu. The best gpu hardware renderer is still Intels quicksync which is much much faster than cuda and produces around five times the quality. Afaik it is fully supported in the newer versions of power director.
Even if i have ppro, i find myself using power director more for shorter projects. It's perfect for same day edits.
