Im thinking of buying the simple 32 bits home basic vista but i hear that 64 is faster and the other vista models are much nicer and better then home basic.
So i get the 32 bits home basic would that mean i will have a crippled vista compared to the oters vista's?

Yes, you might as well stick with XP pro if you are only getting home basic. Upgrade to home premium, it is very stable with all of the graphical effects and runs quite fast with good hardware. Get ultimate of business for more business tools.

You should get Home Basic only if you have limited hardware that can't run Aero. But if you can get Home Premium. There's a lot more you can do with that and you'll get all the Vista eye candy.

Yeah I wouldn't get Vista basic. If you are planning to upgrade to Vista at least get Vista Premium. Otherwise you might as well just keep XP Pro. Your really not missing much without upgrading to Vista. In fact if XP works fine on your current laptop I wouldn't even bother upgrading until you decide to purchase your next laptop.

I totally agree with 'Tim'. Either Vista Premium at least or stick with XP pro imo.

You're not going to see a boost with Home Basic. What are your laptop specs?

My specs: 1,6 ghz core 2 dou, 2gig ram, 8600gt 512mb, 160gb 5400rpm and it has bluetooth which i think is more optimized with vista then xp. And ive also understood that that vista premium and ultimate demand more ram then home basic, is that true?

You won't see a performance boost, but you will see more compatibility. (Bluetooth, Wifi, etc.) To me... Vista Basic isn't worth it. Vista Premium atleast.

There are really only three versions of Vista that should be considered by the average consumer without unusually poor hardware. Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate. Home Premium has better multimedia support than Business, however, it lacks enhanced networking capabilities that are helpful when working in a business infrastructure. Home Premium is directly analogous to XP Home/MCE, and Business is a direct decendent of XP Pro.

If you can say to yourself, "Gosh, I'm sure glad that I got XP Pro rather than Home Edition," then you might want to consider Vista Business. If you can say "Man, I got burned 99$ on all the useless features in XP Pro that I never use," then you'd probably be happier with Home Premium.

Home Basic is a crippled OS for a crippled machine.

Well I got basic mainly because all I need is an OS that can run games. I don't care about multimedia features, eye candy, or pretty much anything in Windows except the ability to launch .exe files. But that's because I don't use Vista as my main OS, but if you do plan to use it as your main, go with Home Premium.

32-bit has better driver support and stability at the moment too. Don't bother with 64-bit unless you need more than 3GB of RAM or have true 64-bit applications (of which there are few).
