i have an old custom built desktop rig:

    2.5GHz P4 on an ASUS P4P800 Mobo.
    2 gigs RAM
    ATi Radeon 9600

and a laptop (specs are in sig). which will be better at handling current games, such as fear, quake 4, doom 3, bf2, etc, at medium settings?

    thanx.

Your laptop - it has better graphics and better cpu.

1GB is sufficient for most games. 2GB is better but it won't make up for the graphics nor the cpu.

I'd say the inspiron, both can handle them well but the inspiron has a better graphics card and cpu, the ram won't make much of a difference if the cards are dedicated. Happy Gaming :)

Your laptop is definitely going to be faster as posted. Quake 4 has a dual-core patch which enables the game to use both cores of the processor - gives a huge boost to performance. There aren't any other games that have that right now I know of except for Call of Duty 2, but expect more and more to appear in the near future.
