Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
i hate wow. I bet if wow was never made, warcraft 4 would have been made by now
But yea, it's an exciting time for wow fans. -
Not really. Even several people who I know as WoW-addicts aren't.
Why?
Because there's a handful of possibly-really-good MMORPG's coming out.
1) Aion Online, the popularity has overcome WoW in mmorpg.com and few other huge MMO sites, it's extremley popular in China already and EU/NA will get it next month. BETA was very successful.
2) StarWars The Old Republic, there may be millions of WoW fans, but there are hundred of millions of Star Wars fans + space themed MMORPG's are rare.
3) Final Fantasy XIV, so far looking really good. Visuals (in Alpha stage) already are simply stunning for an MMORPG. This could very well be the "Crysis of MMO's". BETA will start 2010 Q1.
4) Mortal Online, a game with real-time battles. Practically like Oblivion, not much is known but the hype is .. high. Worth a look into.
5) Guild Wars 2, we don't have a date or even a clue when it'll hit, but thanks to all the trailers and art they have released, many MMORPG fans + original GW players are waiting it like Christmas. -
They is making too many changes to the game. Plus I don't really have time to play anymore
so I kinda don't care too much what they are doing. As long as it's good for casual game play, I might be able to find some time and actually be able to enjoy playing on the side.
A lot of ppl like WoW because it took a lot of hard work to get progression, but down side is you won't have a life doing so.
Blizz is dumbing down the game for casual ppl, but this pisses off old players while bringing in more new players.
It is overall a very well designed game that I personally would not mind paying $15 a month (50cents a day) to play. -
-
-
mate!! They are making another expansion already?
-
-
Dunno, wasn't impressed with Aion beta when I played. Hoping when it actually comes out its improved, but i'll wait for the NBR forum guys to try it out first
Also not so impressed with new expansion, seems like they've just changed the terrain in old places. Added some new territory and dungeons for the high levels. Added a couple new races, no new classes. I usually come back to WOW to try out the expansions like I did with lich king, but this is uninspiring so I think i'll pass completely this go round. -
ANOTHER ONE? Jimminy Crickets! Talk about milking a cow until it bleeds! I mean how many expansions of a sub standard game can they make? I am surprised that WoW has made it this long with a $15/month subscription. I could see people playing four or five months tops, level out, and then get bored. I got bored with the free trial. Oh well, good for Blizzard, err Activision, err ActiBlizzard, err Blizzardvision... whatever.

All i can say is i just bought battle chest. And i'm playing the "40 days" free. And currently WoW's lost 99% of all of it's amazingness.
First and foremost. The graphics for wow suck. No don't you dare try to defend them wowaddicts. The textures are UNGODLY low size for a p2p game. The old world races look absolutely horrible. The enviromental textures are stretched beyond recognition.
Also alot of the weapons all look the same. Most of the bows look the same. Atleast in pw which was a f2p game each of my bows looked different. Each weapon looked different very good on their side.
The enviroment's are that detailed. The underwater effects are ok at best. The only thing i found remotely interesting so far was the battle grounds. But i know as soon as i hit lvl 5x i won't be liking them. Go blizzard for making dks able to join at lvl 5x and have gear on that's better than the old world raiding gear. Aka they've got lvl 70 or so gear on at level 55.
The idea of a Death Knight doesn't interest me. The new races aren't that interesting. The new "class" combos don't seem to interest me. All they're doing is remaking the vanilla wow areas like they should've done a million times before. Oh well i guess some will continue to p2p for this game. I am 99% sure i won't. When a f2p game looks better and behaves better that's when you know something's wrong. -

Let's not forget about Star Trek, Stargate, and even a Dragonball Z mmo's.

Another One? OMG WOTWK just came out!
I would be more upset than happy about all these expansions if I still played the game. -
the only mmo game i will be playing in the future is star wars KOTOR 3
I liked WoW for about 3 weeks, but then I realized I was a noob and doing quests was boring, I wanted to go on epic raids and kill giant bosses, but I wouldn't be able to for quit some time.
i didn't feel like wasting my time or money so I stopped
I would play aion if they had kept there original price plan, the one where you buy the hours, and when you are not playing your not wasting your time, but they changed it to a monthly fee.
but kotor 3 should be different, while it is an mmo, it will have a EXTREMELY good story. they made sure of that.
I love kotor
I also can't wait for diablo 3, it will be the best game ever. EVER. -
Meh. I just canceled my account. I was on the fence before, and this expansion just put me over the edge. I'll be looking forward to the new SW and FF MMO, along with GW2.
-

is kotor mmo supposed to be free anyways, with micro-transactions to pay for it.

I think they're releasing this next expansion so fast because WotLK drove so many people away by dumbing everything down, which is why I left
And I think it's a complete joke that they're making heroic versions of old dungeons like dead mines and all that, it's been a long running joke and now they're actually doing it, ha -
KOTOR 3? Are you referring to the new star wars mmo or actually the new KOTOR game?
Anyways on topic, it is surprising a new expansion is announced since WoTLK came recently... -
Having played WoW since release, guild raided the end-game, and pretty much acheived everything there was to offer in WoW, I just can't really see myself playing a game that is still mired in half rate graphics, ho-hum quests, and uninspiring gameplay.
I can say that Bioware has a track record that bests even Blizzard. If Bioware stays true to form with the upcoming SWTOR MMO as they have in the past with their other games, Bioware is going to tear the MMO scene up. Blizzard is scared, and it is obvious that they are scrambling for ideas.
I mean, seriously. Level cap raised FIVE levels? Goblins and Worgen races? Flying mounts in Azeroth? No, WoW has pretty much reached it's own end game. I wouldn't be suprised if Blizzard wasn't in the process of working on World of Warcraft II because no amount of "new" content or "features" are going to stave off the success of SWTOR. -

If I was 100% in the original WoW (Account created December 23rd, 2004), I was 90% into TBC, but I am maybe 50% into WotlK in regards to excitement and staying power.
By the time TBC came around, I had 6 level 60's. When WotlK came around, I had not only leveled all 6 to 70, but also created a Draenai Hunter and Shaman and took them to 70 also (Yes, that's 8 level 70's).
But WotlK? I had to literally force myself to get two of them to 80 (Nelf Druid and my Draenai Hunter) and couldn't even stomach getting past level 71 on any of my other toons. It took me forever to get to 80 on my Druid after hitting 80 on my Hunter.
Even when I got to 80, I raided all the initial content (Heroic and 10 man), cleared it all and when Ulduar came about, I can't begin to tell you how quickly I lost interest. I've barely logged in the past month. I am infinitely bored with WoW on many levels and detest many of the changes. I logged in to take a look at Trial of the Champion but I was in a 5 man Heroic for 10 minutes before I logged and haven't had any desire to see that content at all. I really dislike the new, "Hey, ride these mounts/vehicle" quests/instance encounters. Even when I was doing Ulduar, I found myself skipping early 1-4 boss clears simply because to me FL isn't fun. Is it a total loot pinata and could 6/14 players do it? Sure. Don't even get me started on The Occulus or EoE. Did I clear all that multiple times (I was hellbent on getting the Ice Spire Scepter) ? Yes, but each and every time I wanted to scratch my eyes out because it simply is not fun. Nothing worse than when you look up and it hits you smack dab in the face that you are very much not enjoying yourself.
The new badge system is just an excuse to have to farm heroic 5 mans again over and over......that is atrocious.
Their PvP is ok at best and I dabble in it, but I am definitely more of a PvE type of player. To me, PvP is Quake/Unreal/TF/CS not the sad excuse WoW offers. I will not grind PvP for gear. I do enjoy some of the dailies (especially the fishing and JC dailies), but when I do log in, I spend more time with my Hunter exploring every nook and cranny of Outlands and Northrend than anything. With the new Xpac and flying mounts in Azeroth, I'm actually excited about being able to explore and to see the cataclysmic changes to the old content I spent many a night exploring and having fun. There's a reason my Hunter is 450/450 Mining/Herbalism. I do love farming and chit chatting with in game buds either via text or usually vent. Now many of us find ourselves shooting the breeze in vent without even logging in much if at all.
I've always loved the original world and content and to me, the Xpac is a signal that Blizzard is trying to get things back to how they were in the original setting but with radical changes which to me is a HUGE plus. I'm genuinely more excited about this Xpac then I was the previous two. I am sure Blizzard is definitely losing subscribers and revenue and while they are still the MMO to beat numbers wise, they are on a definite decline and there are some REAL VIABLE threats on the horizon now.
Outside of the new Xpac, I am VERY excited about the new KOTOR MMO and Star Trek MMO. They will be the major competitors, to me, for my MMO dollars. -

Cataclysm is a last gasp IMHO. I mean, I'm going to play through it to 85 and see what it offers, but my interest is definitely in the SW and ST MMO's and you are right. Bioware has a great track record and it is the perfect storm brewing.
The fact Blizzard has pretty much introduced every mechanism to make external fees (cosmetic changes, now allowing Xfers to PvP realms from PvE, faction switches), means they are basically offering everything to try and keep players along with milking the cow till it's dry.
It will be interesting to see how many people quit playing now, come back for the Xpac, and then the HUGE migration of players to other MMOs.
Hey, maybe it will speed of the SC2/D3 time tables.
Either way, like I said, SW MMO looks amazing. I'm stoked. -
meh not really excited, but i'd play it
-
I have played WoW rather faithfully(maybe quitting at most 2-3 months once in a while) since 6 months after the vanilla WoW came out.
The game itself is ALL about gear(you get gear to get better gear, you pvp to get gear), I'm fine with that whatever. But the problem with making things easier and easier with the new stat changes etc is that, what's the point of getting all that new gear then? I mean, if its dumbed down, why do I want to get uber gear to do raids that I might do only a little worse with current gear?
In my opinion, even though it was pushing it, WOTLK was good enough. Who cares if people want to "theorycraft" or spend hours of their time trying to get best talents and gear whatever. They were having fun their way. Now with the new stat changes, everything will be same and uniqueness will disappear. And I thought "unique" was the mantra Blizzard has been spewing for the entire time of WoW.
Even though I'm in nowhere near the top guild. We are getting bored as hell. Good luck with "Cataclysm". Sometimes I wish the game would die off along with most of the company(except the gems like SC2 and WC3).
Add that they want to introduce new xpacs every 1 to 1.5 years. Paying monthly AND paying $60 every year?? No thanks! -
Guess everyone here hates WoW. Well the trailer looked very dead and kinda rushed. Made WoW look like crap. The WotLK trailer looked better tbh.
-
The game is FINE now. Haven't Blizzard heard the term "If its not broken, don't fix it"?

You guys have hit several nails on the head, they're making their secret 'next-gen MMO' so they're just milking WoW for as much as they can get, and they're probably gonna wait till after Aion, TOR and all those MMO's to come out to see what they're up against and then gonna really not focus much on WoW and really work on their next MMO.
And god I just read some of the new "features" and they are indeed dumbing things down so so much,
http://www.blizzard.com/blizzcon/recaps/class_items_prof-panel.xml
it's like, MP5? removed, Spell power? removed, Attack Power? removed, Defense? removed, oh and I love this "Armor Penetration: This ability is too confusing and "mathy." It is being replaced with Mastery, a stat that makes you better at what you do. More on that later!" too confusing and mathy...
I think their next step is to have bosses drop a single set that every class can wear, so that players don't get confused with different sets and no one has to spend any time at all getting their sets
*blizzard gently pats players on the head* -
The WoW haters come out tonight. I think it looks interesting, and I'm sure I'll be picking it up. I didn't know video games had to be complicated to be fun. Hmm, guess Pong really wasn't that great after all.
Well, for all you that feel the need to scribble down assorted formulas to enjoy a game, a guess a wave to World of Warcrack would be the best bet. For all us slobbering jug-heads in the world, we'll just keep having our fun.
WoW haters can be just as bad as WoW fanboys. -

To be honest I wish WOW was never made, it slows down the development of my precious DIABLO 3! and of course! Starcraft 2.
I REALLY cant wait for Diablo 3, I remember when I first played Diablo, sniff those were goood times... -
StarWars The Old Republic is what I am interested in. Did you guys all see the IGN walk thru? It's interesting.
-
Two new races, some new higher level stuff and changing the way the earlier stuff looked.....wow, innovation at it's finest. -
Excited for the expansion?... Not really. Left the WoW seen a few months ago, even though I was loyal since the early beta days. It's just not the same game it was then. It's factual that Blizzard catering to the casuals and mixing PvE with PvP things was a terribad idea. And no matter what they change..what they put in, it will still be WoW. I need something completely fresh and new. That's why I'm...
Waiting on FFXIV beta. While I do, I'm slowly working through all the console RPGs I put on the wait list because of WoW.
And the peeps who said FFXIV is like the Crysis of MMO and will need a high end computer...that may be true, but don't forget it's also coming out for the PS3 as wellIf my current computer isn't up to par for it (which is highly unlikely...watercooled desktop with about $2500 worth of parts under its hood
) I'll just grab the PS3 version.
Got myself a brand, spanking new 50" HD LCD TV so -

WoW is a system HDD eater and a time/money sink. $15 a month is way too much, that is $180 a year and for veterans who've played for years they're nearing $1,000 on a single game. Each expansion/update eats your HDD space and is nearing 20GBs alone. Not only that but they never add anything for us WoW veterans.
I wish they would remove the monthly fee (maybe I'd play again) and start working on Warcraft 4... I like me some RTS plz. -
Meh, I never opt for the 1 month $15 subscription. Either I buy game cards, which are cheaper at $30 cdn for 2 months, or get a 3 months or 6 months(since I'm going to play anyway so why waste money buying 1 month...).
The biggest gripe I am having is the way they are trying to find more cash out of this cash cow. New expansion every 1-1.5 is a bit too much. Vanilla WoW was like what?? 2 years?? That's ok. -
-
MMO...$2 a day. With new content every few months. With semi-annual expansions. I'd rather do that then experience ads in my face all the time, or micro transactions where I'd have to spend even more money to have access to things online.
Hard drive space shouldn't be an issue with anyone really. They're dirt, freaking cheap nowadays. Even prebuilts come with at least 500GB+.
I'm not being specific with WoW, but just MMOs in general. You think it doesn't cost money to cover all the sever and maintenance costs? Employees to take care of said servers? Bandwidth? Employees working on maintaining a bug free (well, trying to anyways) game? Sorry, but I'd rather pay $15/month then play a sh|tty MMO with little to no content, updates, patches, support etc... -
There are so many decent free online games out there and with a power house/money maker like Blizzard they could afford to lower or remove the monthly fee.
Also the support is very subjective, specially when talking about WoW (which we are). Blizzard has abandoned hardcore players like myself for too long. Every update/expansion is aimed for new comers and nothing for us long time people who've spent $450+ on their game. -
You're viewing MMOs in an odd way.
$450 over 2 years isn't a lot. Especially for a game where you have unlimited play time and content is added, give or take, every few months. And Blizzard is out to make money, and while they remain on their throne, it's not likely they'll drop the subscription price any time soon. Also, their subscription per month is about even with other MMOs out there. What's to complain about? They're a business. They're out to make money.
I regularly hear about hardcore people complaining how the game has gotten casual...and it has to a degree. But I have yet to see these same whiners complete the latest raid in Hard mode or acheive 2000+ ranking in 3 and 5 arena.
MMOs are the more cost efficient genres, that's what I'm getting at. The good MMOs have subscriptions, deal with it. The big upcoming ones have them. Aion, FFXIV, TOR... I'm sorry if $2 a day for unlimited play time with timely updates is too much for you, but the game and developer aren't the problem.
And many of those free "good" MMOs have micro transactions, or some sort of similar system. You're still paying for them, just in a different way. -
-
And about your argument of cost efficiency. Leaving besides the fact that once the game servers are down you basically own nothing (because you have to log online to play), I think your argument is that in a MMO you always have many things to do, but that does not means efficiency at all.
I mean, for a $50 RPG (or a game where I can build my character) it will last me 50-60 hours, but by that time it will be at a very high level (if not there is no level cap) like 50-60+. And that's it. How long do you have to spend in a MMO to get that far? Is it funny to have super-long battles? I know a MMO has its own appeal and it is designed to get everything very slow, but that does not mean it is a cost efficient genre. -
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
The question here isn't what game you play or how fun it is. It is what works for you and how much you are willing to pay on average per month to satisfy your gaming fix regardless of how long you play per month.
If you buy, on average, one game per month @ $50 a game, WoW is a good deal even with a $40 Xpac and $15/mo. If you average a game every two months it is still a better value. To roughly break even, cost wise, you would at most be only able to purchase *1* game every *3* months at ~$50 to equal the cost of WoW averaged over the last 4 years.
I purchased the original WoW @ $49.95, TBC = $39.95 and actually for the sake of argument WotlK was $39.95, but I actually got it for free. So that is ~$130.00.
Let's say $15/month started January 2005.
So
2005 = $180
2006 = $180
2007 = $180
2008 = $180
3 Xpac = $130
Total paid = $850.00 / 48 months = ~$17.71/month or $4.09/wk or $0.58/day
That is roughly the same as buying a new game every three months @ $50-55/ea and hoping it lasts three months. If I buy a game every other month, then WoW is 2x the bargain. If I buy a game once a month, then WoW is 3x the bargain to satisfy my leisure playing time. Again, the argument is not what floats your proverbial boat to occupy your gaming time; it is how much do you pay on average per month to fill your leisure gaming time.
And yes, I know plenty of WoW players who play WoW ONLY to fill their gaming time because in the end, you play what appeals to you and is fun.
This isn't about efficiency. It is about what works for you and what brings you enjoyment. What is deemed, "high level," gaming is in the eye of the gamer. It isn't about your character and who "owns," it or the servers or what not. Whether you play remotely or locally, is comes down to what you play and how much you pay that tickles your gaming fancy.
Remember once again, this is not a subjective, "Well, I think WoW sucks so it is a waste of money," argument. Instead, it is a, "How much do you pay per day/week/month on average to satiate your video game leisure time?" argument. If playing Pong for 5hrs/day still brings you serious gamer joy, more power to you.
Who else is excited for the new WoW expansion?
