I was right, it does work VERY well. I do have the occassional audio stutter that seems the big bug with everyone though it isnt game breaking, very occassional. Hopefully valve will fix it tho, its the only time I realise I'm playing a game and not actually THERE!

I'm playing HL2 on my Emachine M6810 @ 1024x768 and medium settings with low sound quality.

The game is VERY variable in performance - some levels are very smooth and fluid and then others have frame rates dropping down drastically (one section of Route 17 comes to mind).

I was playing last night from the end of the Canal Route and the levels were loading nicely without any stuttering. By the time I got well into Route 17 I was getting the stuttering sounds and graphics as the game was loading into each section of the level.

Apart from the nice water effects I'm not too sure if it is visually stunning compared to the original HL to be honest. Certainly not to the extent that the performance of the game has dropped. After all I could play at 1024x768 on a GF2MX with a minumum of 70fps generally.

Tell it like it is...NOT how it should be :)

I play HL2 with no problems at all. Did not have to reduce graphics or sound details.
I have got a Pentium 4 HT 3.2Ghz with 512Mb RAM and ATI9000 as the graphics card. But the notebook gets pretty hot after a while.

Works fine but not exactly the best of the best - here are my specs.

    Sager NP4750
    17" WSXGA+ LCD
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 128MB DDR
    AMD Athlon 64 3200 1024KB L2 cache
    1,024MB PC3200 DDR400 Memory
    40GB Ultra ATA/100 Hard Drive 4,200 RPM

For World of Warcraft I get around 15-35 fps in large raids.

My friend's desktop with the ATI x800 gets around 25-50 fps in large raids.

I play it on my i9200 and it runs fine. It could be better.

    These are my specs:

    1.6 GHz Pentium M
    512 MB of RAM
    80 gig 4200 RPM HDD
ATi MR9700 with 128MB dedicated memory
    17" 1440x900 screen

I play it at 1440x900 with medium settings. Occasionaly it will lock up when I try to change the video settings. I hope to expand my RAM in the near future. and extra 1.5 GB of RAM would surely help with some of my problems.

It's a great game and it runs great, compared to what I would have expected. It's quite smooth.

Works nice on my overclocked emachines m6805, medium settings. About 90-100fps usually, unless its some crazy explosion and a hundred bloody body pieces fly out from the.... ill stop... lol

There are very few problems that can't be solved with explosives.

I've got a question. I dowloaded the HL2 demo and I can play the first part fine. However, the second part of the demo when you have to shoot stuff is very laggy. Is this normal? Is the shooting stuff part of the game that much more graphics intensive?

it's most liekly ur specs .... to run it majesctly i advise getting 1 gig ram ... nvidia 6800 ultra go or nvidia 6800 go ... centrino 2 ghz ... and the rest is cool ...

all this is for lappy's only ... and just to let u know a centrino 2ghz is equal to a pentuim 4 3.4ghz !

id advise u to get the Dell Inspiron 9300 with those specs or the XPS Gen 2 which is the ultimate gaming laptop with best value for money guarenteed![ :)]

Ok, it just seemed odd that there was about an 80% drop in FPS between those two parts of the game.

Judging by DMB's ability to run it with those low specs, do you think a compaq with amd 2800+, ati 64mb graphics (doesn't say if its 9200 9500 or whatever) 512mb ram, will run it with ok frame rate, ect.? Or do you think i should opt to go with the 3000+ and ati 9600 64mb graphics for $60 more of my very limited budget?

    Looking for $650-$700 laptop

Definately pay more and get the one with the 9600. The ATI graphics in the Compaq are probably ATI's Radeon IGP 340 graphics, which are really bad. That chipset scores below 100 in 3DMark03. With the 9600 you can play pretty much all games out there at decent settings.

Some say that ATI is better and others say that NVIDIA is better...I believe they did do a study which showed the fastest ATI Vs. the fastest NVIDIA and the ATI only won by a tiny bit.. Hope this helps
