I feel like I am the only gamer on the planet that has no interest in online multiplayer games. And its only getting more and more popular, sometimes developers are even sacrificing single-player modes in favor of online gaming.
For instance, people are happy beating the single-player campaign in Modern Warfare in 6 hours and then spending 600 hours in the multiplayer. Whereas I wish the single-player could have been much longer. But it is easier to create multiplayer levels than single-player levels and a lot more people will enjoy them, they have more replay-value and they can sell them as map packs so many people lap up like crazy! The developers will of course listen to the majority. I would love to pay for more single-player missions in Modern Warfare.![]()
I've really only played single-player games my entire life. The few times I do play multiplayer, I want it to be split-screen multiplayer or hotseat like with Worms. Nothing like playing Worms with friends in the same room as you. And sadly, some games are even sacrificing split-screen for online instead, some games only give you online as an option, not both.![]()
Am I the only one that has no interest in online-multiplayer?
People always say, "don't knock it till you've tried it", and I have to admit, my stubborn old self hasn't even tried online multiplayer. Last I remember I was playing a couple of matches of FEAR a couple of years ago and quickly got bored.
I've loved playing Crysis and Crysis:Warhead, and the Crysis Wars disc has been sitting in the case ever since I bought it last year. Maybe I should install it and give it a try, see what all the craze is about, stop being the cranky old man and see what all the hip cool kids are doing.![]()

I have minimal interest. I think the only games I've played are Modern Warfare and Battlefield 2

moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
you have to play with good players or else it does get boring.
-
Man, you are not alone. I also play only single player games (or the single player sections of the games). The last online multiplayer I played was Worms (well, it was actually LAN, but you get my point). In these days the only multiplayer (well, more like double player) I touch are in console games when I go to a friend's house.
-
i wont buy a game unless it has a great single player...or, ya know, is super cheap. but i do love my multiplayer.
-
I'm with you. I don't normally play any multiplayer games, for the simple reason that I just suck at video games in general.
However, I've recently gotten into playing Left 4 Dead- not versus, but the online co-op campaign, as it's kind of like playing the single player but with other people. -
i like some online multiplayer games...
if its all PvP stuff i find it boring as hell... but lots of people love that because they cant get enough competition, which doesn't interest me int he least.. which is maybe why i find sports boring as hell too.
Single player games, or multiplayer where your working together with someone and sharing the experience.. I find fun -
I enjoyed both aspect of gaming. But most recently I have been playing more multiplayer centric gaming than single player. Even though I enjoy a good story, multiplayer add another type of enjoyment in a different perspective. With online multiplayer, depends on the game, there is this enjoyment you get when you work with other people to complete a mission, task, or to win a match.
I completely agree with doh123 in that it is a shared experience that is fun. Also, it is fun to meet new people that share the same interest. No all multiplayer you will probably enjoyed. The simple deathmatch get boring after awhile, but if you play games like Team Fortress 2 or BF2, you get to communicate vocal with your group to complete a task. I think you should try online multiplayer games that requires a group effort, not an individual one. -
I have minimal interest as well. About the only thing I play online anymore is Battlefield 2. I used to play many RTS's like Starcraft, AoE 2/3, and C&C Generals, but I don't play those any more either.
If you have friends that like the same games, then that is fun, especially with setting up Ventrillo or TeamSpeak. Then it's like a little social session for geeksI have a few friends from high school and college that we play together periodically. But since college we've all moved all over the place, we no longer get together personally much any more, so we just socialize over gaming.
I can't meet anyone online to play with either. Very hard to find people that will play at same times or aren't complete idiots about the game. By that I mean either too anal or just complete goof offs. There's a couple BF2 servers where I've gotten to know a few people, but it's just like "hey, how's it going... ok, good here too"...
It's unfortunate that the solid single player game is a rare find anymore. Everything is geared towards multiplayer. I'm cool with co-op campaigns too, that's ok, but the crap fragfest multiplayer that goes into every game is tiring. -
Not a huge fan of online gaming and if i do go online/lan its usually for co-op games like sacred2 of cod waw, i do like teaming up with a mate or two and play some CoH, but i dont have that choice at the moment due to poor internet connection so single player campaign is by far the most important aspect for me.
-
I feel you on this one, I grew up on single player games and I don't drool over online multiplayer or things of sort. Give me a new Zelda game or some Half-Life 2. Online is overrated.
-
Oh yeah, and as OP mentioned Worms, that was the best! How come there's no hotseat type games any more? You need two PC's to play any more. A good turn based strategy game with hotseat multiplayer would be awesome.
-
I only play single player games and have never played any multiplayer ever. I have no interest in them.
-
I usually only play single-player games nowadays, but not by choice. My internet connection is just too slow to enjoy playing online. I do love some COD4 or Halo LAN matches with a friend though.
-
-
I don't do very much multiplayer. I only played CoD:W@W on 360 with my friends a bit before I got bored of it.
Give me a real damn storyline, something to sink my intellectual teeth into! -
I don't bother with multiplayer in games, only time I did care about the feature was with an active LAN within the dormitories, now that I'm on my own the single-player component in games is the only thing worth thinking about when making a purchase.
-
Glad to see I'm not the only one with an aversion to online multiplayer. But maybe I will give it a try, to see why do people love it so much? I absolutely love Crysis and Warhead so I will try Crysis Wars soon, that disk has stayed untouched in my Crysis: Warhead box since I bought it at at release last September. I just keep playing Crysis and Warhead single-player.
I'd feel more comfortable playing with friends and family in online multiplayer instead of strangers, but they are all console gamers.
Single-Player >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Off-line Multiplayer >>>>>>>> On-line Multiplayer -
I really think you should consider trying out Call of Duty online, I was skeptical at first and it takes a while to get in the groove, but its a lot of fun.
-
Rarely plays online?; - another one here. Though I loved playing small LAN setups in the day, my friends and I would rather go out to have a drink these days. Proper old-fashioned socialising.
I've also always prefered single-player RPGs such as Final Fantasy to MegoMorphinRPG's. In fact that goes along with the majority of genres accept FPS and RTS, which seem really popular around here. -
I don't buy a FPS if it does not have a good multiplayer-part. I have never completed Call Of Duty 4, I just play multiplayer, and that's the same I'm going to do with Modern Warfare 2. Activision focus on the multiplayer
-
If you get bored of competing against an other human beings in something that brings you together then theres something wrong with you :/ im sorry.
Seriously, playing single player is just playing against a computer, set pieces, a script, now thats boring. In multiplayer you play against people with skill, tactics, incentives, goals which makes it a lot more exciting.
Multiplayer is the only reason would buy a game for, unless it has a specifically good single player. -
I've always thought multiplayer was a bit "meh". You mention incentives - what are they? In a typical match it's simply "kill those guys 'cause they're on the opposite team". Human players may have skill and tactics , but the goals are simply "kill the other guy". That's all just a bit boring to me. -
Me. I never play online. I play a game for the story. Like a good book. Multiplayer don't make sense to me.
-
-
I remember playing Worms World Party with my friends a few years ago. That was fun.
I play some MP online when I'm bored often these days, (mostly CoD4 Team Deathmatches or some Dawn of War 2 ranked 1v1 matches) but I also always enjoy good singleplayer games from time to time. -
Howitzer225 Death Company Dreadnought
Meh, I never played an multiplayer since such games are fads here-when a new once comes, the other quickly loses players save for the really loyal ones. Of course, there are those that survive but some of those require you paying for the service, which I don't really like.
-
Wow im actually surprise by the response here that most of you guys do not enjoy online multiplayer. It just offer so much replay value to a game. Like someone mentioned previously about scripted events and A.I., then thing is that you can play a single player so many times before you become bored of it. There is always something new with multiplayer and being a STEAM fan, having that service is what made multiplayer so enjoyable.
-
Personally i like my FPS games online, but don't really play RTS games online. I generally play natural selection which is a old half life mod that is very heavy on teamplay, in short one person can't win the game which i prefer http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/ -
The others you mention were multi-player from the ground up...with AI bots tossed in for those of us who don't like multi-player gaming. And I still regularly play Assault Mode in the original Unreal Tournament by myself...love taking over and defending the train...
I find that online gaming is mostly people figuring out all the 'tricks' and then exploiting them to beat less experienced players...it started in Warcraft 2...why build walls as a defensive barrier, when you can build farms which are quicker to build, longer to destroy, completely confuse catapults/ballistas and can feed your growing army? For me, I just found it preposterous to attack a city surrounded by 50 farms...
And then there was Madden on the XBox...you can't quit or you'll get a forfeit against you...but if you're being beaten, you can just set your gamepad down, go eat lunch or watch TV, and take lots of delay of game penalties until the person winning finally quits...where's the fun in that?
And yesterday, I decided to give BF:1943 a try since my high school friend (across the U.S.) was going to be playing...didn't know the maps or controls, but I learn somewhat quickly...however, the trick yesterday was to use long range weapons (sniper, artillery) and just sit there sniping people at their auto-respawn point (the point that gets you closest to the action)...now, I could choose a different spawn point, and if there was a vehicle there, then it was only a minute or so to get back in the fight (unless the spawn point was a ship and then you had to swim because all the shore-based artillery was aiming at you), but with no vehicles, I spent more time running back to the frontline vs playing...not much fun...and I guess people could claim 'realism', but I call it 'frustration'...and I don't even know how that's fun for the person sniping or on the artillery gun...I'm still trying to figure out how they derive satisfaction from it...
No thank you to online multi-player gaming...until the anonymity is removed, and people feel like they can no longer be their worst selves, I'll stick to multi-player gaming on a split screen or LAN...and Blizzard is making a big mistake IMO not allowing LAN play on Starcraft 2... -
Games like BF2 at least have huge maps, common goals and objectives, and somewhat forces team play. Probably 90% of other multiplayer just add it because it's "the thing to do." Same formula, nothing new or different.
Don't get me wrong I had my fun with Quake 3 Arena, Half-Life 2 Deathmatch, and FEAR multiplayer, but they were just a cheap thrill to me. I guess I'm more referring to FPS than RTS. But even in RTS, unless it's well balanced, multiplayer is just who can build the most units the fastest. It leaves the "S" out of RTS.
I also like a good LAN play because I'm with friends that have similar abilities and it's a social event. Playing online you could get the hacker special or some dimwit who knows how to cheat the system, or just quits before the game ends so nobody gets a win or loss.
Anyhow, I'm not against multiplayer, I'm just against poorly executed multiplayer. -

When I buy a game(fps) I go straight online with it, I don't even attempt the story mode. The only games I play the story mode on is Fighting games since thats usually the only way to unlock characters but other then that I go straight online.
-
I think "never playing multiplayer" or "never playing single player" is just depriving yourself of a good game. Some games are entirely dependent on multiplayer aspects (i.e. Battlefield 2) and others rely on creating an immersive environment hand-tailored by developers with scripts (i.e. STALKER).
To never play one or the other is like eating only the chocolate side from a Napolean ice-cream. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
The only multiplayer I do is Left 4 Dead and CS 1.6. Everything else is single player.
I might try out TF2 one of these days. -
Warcraft3 and Diablo2 are the only games I play online, when SC2 and D3 come out, i am gonna try both of them too.
-
No multiplayer or online for me either.
Just not interested enough or have enough hours in the day -
I tried CSS online a few days ago and i had not played it for a very long time. It was so borinf because i could not even start before someone headshoted me with an ak47 from 100000 feets away. Its not that am bad but when people always head shot u in 1 shot even before they see u it takes the fun out of the game.
-
Depends on the game for me. I loved the single player campaign on CoD4 and I was also quite a good player online so I enjoyed that too.
But on the other hand, playing competitively on CSS is insanely difficult because there are people that have surpassed the game aspect and live on it, so I just play the Zombie games and fun maps -

Wow I'm surprised to see so many people that rarely or never plays multiplayer, I mean, I can see where you guys are coming from:
- some people treat games as a story-telling medium, like an interactive movie
- some games are very newbie unfriendly, where people have played many hours since day 1 and will destroy you without a blink if you tried to casually pick it up
- some people are non-competitive and most multiplayer games are geared towards competition
- internet; whether people have bad connections, or are travelling or something, you don't need internet for single player games
- online community; when a new game of a multiplayer series come out, it divides the community and you're often forced to buy the latest installment to keep up with everyone else
But on the flip side, there are some games where I want more replayability after I'm done the single player. I think that's why I like Blizzard, they have a pretty good record for making good single/multi player games. I usually play the single player first in starcraft & warcraft 3, which can occupy you for many hours, then hop on to the multiplayer community and see what crazy maps people have created.
Personally, I'm not very competitive, but I still like playing with people, so I enjoy games like L4D where you co-op and work together, and in more competitive FPS' I usually play the medic classes, like in TF2 & BF2, I like to play me some DotA too, where again, I prefer the support classes. Then there are also games where I don't play online but only the single player because I like the story (MGS4). Then there are games where I'm glad they didn't even consider trying to fit a half assed multiplayer in (Elder Scrolls series, DMC series, FF series, etc) -
I can't stand online games.
-
I have never played anything online... ever... I might try it if my internet connection wasn't as crappy as it is... but I guess I would still enjoy single-player much more.
-
Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
In regards to FPS games I have played some MP but I am mostly interested in SP. I usually just try the MP in a game to see what it's like but I put it away after only a few hours of play, in favour of more SP. With some RTS games I like to play co-op with a friend so that is considered MP but it isn't competitive.
Seems you are not alone. -
If a game doesn't have a good single player mode..............I don't buy it !
Don't care how fantastic a mutiplayer game it might be ! -
Granted with most other multiplayer I take it with a grain of salt and have fun, but with BF2 I have so much time invested, I grow tired of the glitches that shouldn't exist. -
-
I also never play multi-player. But anything is possible...

Who never plays online multiplayer?
