Why A Laptop???

I find it odd that like half the wtb posts are people that say "it will probably never leave my desk" and they want some super gaming laptop...I guess if you have the $$$ to blow its not a big deal but if your never going to take it anywhere why not just build a super nice gaming desktop and save some $$$

 

Because too many people have more money than they know what to do with.

lol, I knew that was coming. I didn't buy a 17-inch MBP because I just felt like it, I bought it because I needed a powerful, and portable Mac for school, not just to have it sit on my desk so I can tell people I have a cool laptop

And FYI, I actually saved a good amount of money on this MBP, I'm not loaded -_-

Gaming Desktop+ cheap 12 inch laptop is soooooooo much more efficient.

 

I think some people buy them just because they feel laptops are more "fashionable" than a big gaming desktop.

Yeah but who cares what it looks like if it never leaves the desk, I just cant imagine a XPS 1730 or Alienware 9750 never leaving a desk, its just so pointless

That was my main point in not buying a gaming laptop, as much as I wanted one I just didn't feel like spending the $$$

So far I have about $1500 into my desktop and its kills a 9750 on PCMark05 and 3DMark06

 

I bought one because it is required for my major (Virtual Technology & Design).... otherwise I'd be running Crysis at max on a kick ass desktop. I'm not complaining though, I am very satisfied with it. I'm probably going to build a desktop for gaming soon though, to replace my last desktop build.

 

Because a desktop is vastly superior in performance and gaming and a 12 inch laptop is much more portable??

It's also much cheaper than buying a true gaming laptop

 

I agree, that MBP sure wasn't cheap and it wasn't made for mobility either.

I don't understand people either, when it comes to gaming laptops that they purchase. The most often used excuse is they use the gaming laptop on long trips, which could be true. But a lot of people also say they'll never take it off their desk; which is a direct contradiction to the comment I said above.

I don't know... but I know I don't like having long gaming sessions hunched over my laptop like I bet most people do. Sure, its alright when your on the go but not all the time at home. Docks are one way to bypass this, but most people don't even use the video out function on the notebook.

 

why do people feel the need to have all those neon lights on computers? why do they bother selling custom cases?

 

Uh, how was it not made for mobility, if it's 1 inch thick, light, and gets around 5 hours of battery life while using WiFi and Bluetooth?

 

Why do people buy mansions, buy BMW's, buy jewelry (they're freaking colorful rocks). Answer: because they can.

The better question is: why do you care what other people buy?

I got to the point where I started entering my credit card # on the Alienware site, and just could not do it knowing how much it would be actually used for gaming.

 

I really could care less most of the time what people buy I was just saying how I think its funny that someone would buy that expensive of a laptop and never take it anywhere.

 

If you are not moving your machine, really is much more reasonable to have a gaming desktop and a cheap notebook. But maybe some people don't want the trouble with moving data between more than one machine. I have only one and backups of my important data in two external hds, and I never remember which one is more complete or newer.

My case: I pass my days between two houses and 3 hospitals (surgeon). Not counting congresses, courses, etc. So If I used the money for my ASUS G1S in a super-duper gaming desktop I wouldn't be able to game most days of the week. This way I can game whenever I can or want.

 

not everyone live at a permanent home w/ mom and dad. why do ppl get mini-fridge when it never leaves the room! u can fit twice the amount kool-aids in standard size fridge

If you ask me, no 17 inch notebook is made for mobility. Anything larger then a 15 inch notebook would be like carrying a shield or something on your back. It isn't about the thickness or weight as it is the size of it.

Sure, your notebook costs around 2,000 dollars so it would be able to be lighter then a regular 17 inch notebook but its still wide.

 

Yeah if you move around a lot, then by all means, I am not questioning why someone who is always on the go has a laptop, my post was mainly about people on the WTB forum that state that it will never leave there desk.

And I think the min-fridge thing has more to do with its a lot less $$$ then a regular fridge..

 

Well, fortunatley enough for me it's the exact dimensions of the bag I use to carry my books in, so it wasn't a problem. However I see your point, as carrying it under your arm, or something like that, would be a bit of a hassle.

 

i got myself a g1 for playing games at uni where i can't take my lanbox (plus work payed for about a third of it anyway)

but i have to agree with you. i spent $1500 on my lanbox and it is better than a $3000 laptop.

 

Macbook Pros have great capabilities of being mobile and portable. It's the slimmest 17" laptop I have ever seen. You can't complain about that part.

 

Heh.. .I was one of those who got a true gaming laptop (old Sager) a few years back. Man... what a waste of money!
Spend 2500 on a laptop that really isn't portable... no battery life and heavy as hell.

Most of the heavy gaming laptops will be outdated for games within 1-2 years anyway, where a desktop (costing half the initial price for same speed) would only require a bit of money to be able to meet current demands. Doesn't make much sense to me now, but I can understand the interest.
I can really only understand it being a smart decision say, for the college students who have to fly between school and home.

But for people to go spend 5-6k on a laptop just because it's the "fastest" laptop out there, sorry... Unless you seriously have cash to burn, its just not a wise financial decision. Spend 2k on a desktop, 1.5k on a good portable laptop and then bank the rest!

I myself needed something portable, powerful, good battery life and I wanted to try out OS X (first time user of it). Love it! Great purchase (especially considering a college grant paid for mine) and it's really great having a real Unix terminal.

 

Purchased mine for going on the road. I spend 5-8 months a year on the road, so this just seemed like a practical purchase, although at the moment it has only left my desk twice, as I am home for 2 months.

 

i simply want a gaming laptop because i prefer laptops, they are smaller and look cooler, i can also bring it to LAN party's very easy. I think desktops are boring and look ugly

 

Instead of spending $5k on a laptop I could buy a Asus G1s and still have $3k spent including my desktop

Now I really don't consider a g1s a high end gaming laptop but your saving close to $3000 if you buy a g1s instead of a loaded alienware and you should still be able to run newer games pretty good

 

Because you can play games sitting on a couch or a bed, with your computer in your lap. It's more comfortable than sitting in a chair at a table.

 

Pretty much was AGP said, i take my laptop where ever i go. Friends house, road trip, vacations etc. I also like to sit in bed and watch my anime/movies. Now if i could, i would game when i brought it to these places, and when im at home game on my desktop. If people have the money i say go ahead and buy, but like Lithus, i wanna know why you care.

 

I really don't care, its not like its keeping me up at night.

And you guys are obviously not reading what I posted at all because I said if you need one because your always moving then thats fine, just don't see the point if it never leaves your desk.

I post and ask why buy a gaming laptop if it wont leave your desk and everyone is like

"Because I take it places"

KPot2004, you clearly bring up a good, rational point. But as we all know, understanding "people" is almost impossible. They all have many different reasons for doing the same thing.

I think people just want to "have their cake and eat it to." It is costly, but having the best computer, and portability just makes some people happy. But if money is important to them, I'm sure they will find your reasoning quite logical and appealing. Its makes sense to me.

 

How about having fewer wires and less room taken up in small apartments? The option also remains to move the laptop somewhere else which may not be practical for big desktops even if the option is rarely or ever used.

 

Why a laptop?
Because playing FEAR during some booooring lessons at uni is priceless...

 

Why a laptop? a thousand reasons...
1) huuuuuuge space saving....I mean, I can literally place all my stuff on my des without a problem, ever since I got a laptop
2) huuuuuuge electrical bill saving...So major hardcore gamers use what, 1200W PSU ? and a super fast laptop uses what? 150-250W adapter?come on...
3)plug and play. Take it , play with it, love it.Anywhere,anytime.
4)If I`m on a road trip,bored out of my arse,I just pop in a good dvd or what some series and voila,boredom away ..
5)A laptop will always look cooler than a desktop just because if makes you imagine the possibilities...all that power under a slim case... whoooa...

I would take to list to infinity, were it not for my iminent trip. In which I`m taking my laptop also (playing Video Strip Poker in a bus gets everyone red and jealous )

I would use a laptop because my but gets sore from sitting at a desk doing school work most of the day and night. It would be nice to sit somewhere more comfortable. Also you can take your laptop with you on the can but I wouldn't try that.

 

And of course the best reason of all:

No UPS or other emergency power source needed when your main(s) power fails. Even a lappie with a shot battery will give the user enough time to shut things down properly. That counts big time in my view. And it's portable. Not like a desktop......

My feelings are are follows:

1. Buy a lappie only if you are going to use it mainly for mobile business and/or college notetaking etc. For business purposes, the fact that the computer is independant of mains failures as stated above is invaluable. No corrupted files through Windows being suddenly and unexpectedly shut down while it is in the middle of something. Worse still, while Windows is busy booting, the power shuts off. Corrupted OS is virually guarenteed and requires a fresh install. Happened to me with 2K. For students, a lappie is a great tool to help with notetaking in class etc. The "coolness factor" of owning a lappie for the wrong reasons is a lot of crap.

2. If a desktop will suffice your needs and you don't move your computer more than once a month than go and buy a decent, upgradeable, fast desktop machine that will last. For less than half the price of a lappie. Oh and a cheap UPS too.

And I understand what the OP is questioning. In my case, I don't travel much with my laptop but for a temporary situation where we're limited in room, it makes it convenient to pull out and put away at a moments notice. For college students staying in a dorm or apartment makes a lot of sense too.

But yea, for the most part, why would someone that just wants it sitting on their desk not get a performance desktop and an average laptop. I did that and for less price than a DTR, I can still game on my laptop.

 

If you want to try that be my guest, sounds horiffic to me.

Samsung Q45 with SR, 2GB, 160GB etc. £630

You save: £600 - enough for a Months' rent on a house, or a 42" TV, or 6000 miles worth of Gas for my car. That's with a Dell DT, if I built it myself it'd be more like save £800.


IMVHO people who buy DTR and hardly ever travel with them are doing it because they have the money to waste and they can. I can't see any ther reason except perhaps to save some space, but rather than spending 3 times what you would on a desktop to get the same performance, why not spend the money on a bigger place?

I don't see the point, honestly, I really don't.


Don't even get me started on Quad core laptops that are 3" thick.

 

I own one for practically millions of reasons, but the biggest ones are as follows.

I'm 17, parents are divorced, which means I go back and forth between two houses 6 miles away from each other about 2+ times per week. Since I live at my father's house less, I don't have a room of my own, and thus no where to put a desktop, actually no where to put a laptop on either which is why I use it on my lap, on a sofa.

I hate sitting at a desk, over the years I've got a ton of back pain from sitting at a desk gaming, since I started using gaming laptops, I can just kick back on the la-z-boy and game in total comfort, and the back pain is none existant.

I find it funny to sit next to someone using a MAC in either a starbucks or the light rail, pull out my gaming laptop, and ask them what they can do on their notebook, while playing COD4 .

BTw, this notebook I have right now feels like it weighs nothing. I can't see how people find 17 notebooks big or heavy. except mabe SLI ones.

 

That's an excellent reason to have one, but yours isn't siiting on the desk never being moved, it's moving all the time.

Why would you guys be questioning the need for a laptop on a laptop forum? Why have a desktop? It's big, it comes in thousands of different pieces, and nVidia always give you the urge to buy a new card every two weeks since they release new cards that often. You got your 20lb body, a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and all that junk, you have to connect them all. So why not a laptop? It's one piece, which means it's mobility, simplicity, and convenience.

 

I can play my games that are on my desktop just fine from the couch or my recliner :-D

It's why they made HDTV's heh...

But I have to say it's more comfortable and better for my back when I play at a desk with a really good chair.

 

i got a portable laptop then gaming at home, and light on the laptop. LOL if i bought a gaming laptop for school. how would i concentrate when the COD4 icon is just sitting there begging to be played.

+ i think its much cheaper 1 cheap laptop and killer rig. ive saved enough for an ipod

I love the fact that with my notebook I got my screen,keyboard,touchpad,microphone,webcam,wlan and so one in just one machine without any cables , its just so much more convenient.

And notebooks arent that much more expansive than computers , maybe around ~200€ , at least thats how it was for my notebook.

I dont know what games your playing but any fps would be damn near impossible with a track pad.
