I mean, if the GTX 680M had 4 GB of RAM and the GTX 880M (which is still just GK104) had 8 GB even though most desktop gamers bought 2 GB versions of the GTX 680, then how come the laptop version of the GTX 1080 doesn't have, say, 16 or even 32 GB of RAM?

Physical board space constraints.

We know but he is refering to 880m/980m where they had 8GB VRAM and the desktop 980 and even 980Ti only had 4GB VRAM... So he seems to be wondering why does the laptop 1080 offer the same VRAM as the desktop model.

IMO, the 880M and 980M didn't need that much VRAM. There could be any reason why they used 8GB in those cards - perhaps it made logistical sense to do it, possibly they did it for marketing purposes or if you are more inclined to cynicism they did it so they could charge more for them. However if i'm not mistaken the 980M and the Quadro M5000M are pretty much identical (minus the SLI connector). Since workstation tasks can benefit from more VRAM it may be that they deemed it cheaper to produce the same components for both 980Ms and M5000Ms rather than give the 980M a new PCB with less VRAM.Papusan likes this.

VRAM is useful when needed... So refering to a laptop something u don't upgrade in the case of BGA or something u don't upgrade often in the case of PGA/MXM it's nice to have the extra VRAM there for larger texture files... However you do not need 32GB VRam on one GPU lmao... I have provided an image of 4 Titan Xp running 8K GTA V Redux Mod using 40GB VRAM... Again u need the power of 4 cards to run this smoothly not 1 card...

980 Ti has 6GB
That is some really bad GPU utilization, only 60-70% per card, despite the frame rate being below 60. 2-way would probably perform similarly.
Also the VRAM counter is borked (this was an Nvidia driver bug a while back) and is showing 4 terabytes of VRAM being used. -
I'm assuming it as 40GB as there are 4 Titan Xp... Thanks for the 980 Ti correction I must have been thinking of 700 series... When u have Quad SLI I'm sure this is the issue that's also 8K Maxed GTA V with Redux Mod...

Take a look at that screenshot again. 4059176MB * 1GB/1024MB * 1TB/1024GB = ~3.87TB
3.87TB is a total nonsensical number for VRAM consumption. It was an Nvidia driver bug like I said (I'm assuming that screenshot is from an old ThirtyIR video or something). That's the number tools like AB/RTSS would display regardless of the actual VRAM consumption.
Anyway, considering that Titan Xp has 12GB, and VRAM does not stack in SLI, anything significantly over 12GB should ring alarm bells. -
Yes it was a ThirtyIR Video

Correct me if I am wrong but VRAM is mirrored not shared, unless this has recently changed?
-
It's not but for a game like How else would u run 8K Maxed GTA V off 12GB VRAM?
Sent from my unknown using Tapatalk -
Nvidia was doing that because the mobile cards were lacking in other areas, purely for appeal to the ignorant. There's no reason to do so when you're selling 1:1 desktop chips.
VRAM is also ridiculously expensive right now, so why waste money? -
Your post doesnt really make sense.
-
It a Titan Xp has 12GB VRAM how do u run GTA V Max settings in 8K Resolution off 12GB VRAM... I'm pretty sure it doesn't stack but something must going on there

No, just because you feel like it cant run on 12GB vram doesnt make it shared.
That is not logical in the slightest. -
Not saying it's shared just saying I don't feel it would run off 12GB VRAM

In real, a gtx 1080 dosent need 8gb vram, its usefull only when sli kicks in! With dual gtx 1080, the processing powrr becomes heavyenought to require 8gb vram! Those old cards werent powerfull enough to use that ram!

Actually you can easily hit over 6GB of vram in R6 Siege and thats a 2015 title.

Having 8GB Vram in my 980m has been a good thing. I've used almost 7GB in some games and so
it isn't a ridiculous amount for this console generations ports.Reciever likes this.
Why did Nvidia stop cramming ridiculous amounts of RAM into laptop GPUs?
