What is the obsession with Call of duty? I play COD 2, MW, MW: WAW, and MW: BO, and I really don't see what great about it?
Sure it has good graphic, and it the easiest fps game ever made, but it doesn't add anything new.
I really hate it shooting mechanic, really hate any game with aim down sight, or I guess modern game with aim down sight.
I'm still waiting for a game that have shooting mechanic like Delta Force: Black Hawk Down and Joint Operation, and so far no game has live to that expectation that I have set myself too.
I don't know why Nova games are not more popular but those were the most fun I had in any shooting game beside of course CS 1.6 and CSS.
COD is boring because it repetitive, most objective is go from point A to B to C to D jump down rope, shoot a wave of soldiers, blow up a tank, and escape via helicopter or other method. That it, that all COD games are comprise off, I should know because I try so hard to want to like the game but I just can't. I have finish every campaign in all those COD games listed above which I didn't do for Bad Company 2 but it get old quick.
I wish it had more objective, like seek out a person and try to kill him, travel to some underground tunnel and try to save someone, go on a long ride and shoot everything in sight, but then travel by foot go across a pond of gator and try to ambush the next village. This is what makes Novalogic games so good yet they are not very popular.
When people think of FPS, they think of COD when Novalogic Delta Force series have always been unknown and not very well regarded by the general public. Most hardcore player play these games, ARMA II, and of course the old Recon.
MW3 seem to continue the trend of repetitive boring gameplay and old reanimation with slightly better graphics and a price tag of $60 and people are still going to buy it. I don't get it??? At least even though Battlefield 3 multiplayer look very lame compare to the single player, I can imagine replaying the single player mission many times cause it look insane!
If anyone here like COD, please explain to me why you like it. I try my best to like it but I just can't seem to enjoy it. Now if there is a COD 6 and they change the shooting mechanic, have new animation, and make it as big of a leap as BF3 is to BF2, then I can start liking it but so far it the same old rehash animation.
Thanks

I haven't tried any COD games yet, but TBH they seem like a ripoff for being too short.
I'm used to open sandbox RPGs that can deliver hundreds of hours of enjoyable gameplay for each playthrough, and strategy games like Civ series, etc. where every match is a completely different game. I can enjoy some games that are shorter, but to me "shorter" still means at least 30-40 hours, or so. -
MW2 was beautiful.

because they are dumb...
COD is joke!!!!

Anyway, Calling the Duty was first good (CoD1, 2, 4) but they lost my respect after MW2 and Black Ops. This is what I believe: They (Activision) are just milking out the series for what it is worth (They don't patch the game at all, and it seems like same game, different graphics every year). All the consolers pretty much play CoD since it is more of a console (well 360) game... (Again, Activision knows that the big bucks will come from the consoles) I EVEN know people who say Black Ops is bad and still play so much of it.
People like Call Of Duty because it's what they like. You can't really hate on people having preferences. (For the record, I am a Battlefield guy.) But obviously, people don't buy CoD for the single player (Waaay better games for singleplayer + story). They play it for the multiplayer and to pwn noobs! I actually liked the Black Ops campaign for the story, but the gameplay wasn't really something new.
I'm going to be interested in the BF3 campaign if it is really fun, but unless it has like a nice story, it probably wouldn't be a main selling point for me. I hope it will be my favorite FPS game, because I buy 4 (released) games a year and I was expecting Brink to be something I loved, but it wasn't.
Going to go out on a limb here and say: BF3 > MW3 IMO. -
I have played all of the Call Of Duty Series (including most of the handheld console versions, which generally suck quite bad). I found COD 1 to be the best as it was something new. A fun shooter with a reasonably immersive story. Infact I think I played it through 3 or 4 times! Then COD2, basically an improved COD1, better graphics, slightly improved interface and some new maps/locations. COD3 never really took off, I played quite a bit of online multiplayer but it didn't really add anything new.
Then we get to COD4, a great game, graphics were good (not great) for its time, the story was awesome and it was like playing through a war movie (which for some people is the reason why they love/hate it). I clocked up a considerable amount of hours online as it was so fun, the incentives for levelling up for new weapons etc just kept me coming back.
COD5 WAW was a pretty good game IMO. On console it offered the coop campaign (which few console games offer nowadays, its all about singleplayer and online multiplayer) and coop nazi zombies.
MW2 was just an improved version of the first, with a slightly more ridiculous story and without dedicated servers (which for me was actually a plus, as the server browser in Black Ops when it was first released was an absolute nightmare).
Black Ops.. well the story was nowhere near as immersive as COD4 (or COD1 for that matter) and well the online play was different.. not necessarily better than COD4/MW2. Also, by then, I had become tired of linear FPS like COD. The only time I play COD now is to play MW2 online with friends.
I used to play all of the Novalogic games, (Delta Force 2 being my fav!) but after Joint Operations, they just didn't bother to use a new engine. I got Delta Force Xtreme, hoping to rekindle my memories of DF2, however the graphics were so noticeably poor compared to todays games that I just gave up.
What do you mean by aim down sight? Pretty much every FPS game has an aim down sight, including all of the Delta Force/Joint Operations games.
Finally, yes I understand that the COD games get boring fast, and yes they are repetitive, but if you have fun while playing them then that is enough. (And Arma 2 rocks, would play that over COD anyday!)

I don't understand, how is aiming down the sights bad?
And there's a bit of irony in your complaint that CoD is repetitive, because in this remark:
Delta Force games weren't popular because they were pretty low budget and didn't have the production values, writing, and marketing that the COD series has.
I think all of the CoD games have been pretty great, with the exception of Black Ops, which felt like a poorly executed cash-in.
Additionally, I don't understand why people feel a need to make things mutually exclusive. I'm not against CoD or BF, I think both series are great, and different in their own ways. Makes no sense to be a fanboy for a video game series. Play both. -
I only ever played the original online and from then on only play the campaign although with Black ops the campaign was so bad I didnt even bother.
BF2 and BFBC2 are by the far the best Warfare online games and that is why COD players hate it so much because you have to work together to reach your goals, help each other to survive medics, engineers etc and generally work as a team. COD is just for mindless zombies who want to just kill better than the next person there is no warfare its just PvE literally and your put on a squad to even things out. I went back to BFBC2 a couple of weeks ago and love it again and the one thing you notice is that even though Medics suffer with weapons and equip and spend the majority of their time zapping people back to life the majority of the people in game choose to be Medics, says it all.
BF3 over MW3 all the way. -
I don't like BO, but MW2 was great, I really enjoyed it, especially online, was a lot of fun. It had/has some serious flaws, but I like it nevertheless, it's fast-paced, excellent maps and graphics are very enjoyable in my opinion, way better than the BO graphics.
But everyone has it's own preferences... -
-
Cod 1 and 2 are my all time favorite shooters, great games! I gave world at war a try and hated it. I am still looking for a game that is good as those 2.
-
It's just all peer pressure. Their friends are playing the game and if you don't really like the game, you want to play with your friends so you just play the game -_- or at least that's how it works around here.
-
i enjoy CoD because i can play it without needing to be good at it. i used to be a hardcore gamer, but have become more casual over time. if a game has a high learning curve, i have a hard time getting into it.
and i purchase CoD games strictly for the single player campaigns - i never do the multiplayer thing. -
The Call of Duty series has always been a repetitive copy of its predecessors. People tend to forget just how many World War II shooters COD and MOH threw out on the market. People used to trash COD for releasing more and more of the same game. Granted COD2 is considered to be a great online FPS.
It comes down to popularity and ease of use. Whenever you hear kids talking about online gaming they always use xbox live. There is so much media hype just surrounding the xbox 360 that most people wouldn't even consider using a ps3 to game on. Looking back at the xbox 360's durability, so many people had problems and yet they kept buying replacements.
These same people that are so firm on the xbox live experience that they have owned multiple xbox 360 systems can't be waved from more of what they consider to be the best fps of all time. It doesn't matter how terrible the single player is to these gamers. It's all about going online and talking mad game to ten year old kids. In a few years something will do what COD MW did to Halo and steal all the herd into some other game. -
I agree though, hype and peer pressure do play their parts.
, but this is the last COD game I ever buy until things change considerable (ie. the game does something original or...dies
). I pre-ordered Black Ops on PC and found out it was the worst game I'd ever bought from a playability/quality standpoint. It was just one huge bug/glitchfest/crapheap (call it whatever) and was completely unplayable. I've never had to do so much just to play a game. I'm not going through that again, at least not with Activision and their new cash-cow COD. I loved COD4, after Doom it was my first real FPS ever. I can't explain it, but I got an exhilarating feeling whenever I played it. It was an undescribable feeling when I pulled of the game-winning move in an S&D Match on Crash. Or when I got a lucky/sick game-winning killcam in Chinatown. Since COD4, everything has been rehash after rehash. Took me until Black Ops to really realize that. Ofcourse I'll get the most I can out of Black Ops, since I've already paid for it (about $48). Too late now to cry over spilled milk, but I have learned my lesson
. Bye COD, was nice knowing ya.
-
Was never a big fan. I did love the story in MW2, but to me, BF:BC series is just so much better. More immersive, better sound, awesome physics, better actual squad based team combat.
I do enjoy the COD single player experience though. Something which BF:BC has lagged a little in. -
I had a decent time in MW2, however BO was a complete rip-off for those who bought it. One of the worst FPS I've ever played imo.
The multiplayer experience in Battlefield BC2 brought me so much more entertainment than all the COD's combined. -
I play Black Ops or MW2 because I'm either too damn tired to think in SC2 or just plain lazy. lol
That's why it's so popular.... the learning curve is far low. lol the objective of the game is to just pew pew and ask questions later (no "real" teamwork needed. well kinda you do but most ppl I play in the server don't.)
Think about games like BFBC2, that game requires actual teamwork and what nots that COD multiplayer don't have.
Well that's my 2 cents anyways. -
Seriously saw this on bumper sticker in Atlanta area the other day...My CoD playing 12 year old can pwn your 12 year old. Pretty much says it all in a nutshell. -
-
It's a FPS that you can play with friends.
I've played all kinds of FPS. COD isn't that bad. People just like to whine. -
Nazi Zombies. /thread.
^Agreed, the rest of the game really isn't terrible, either. Local multiplayer is an absolute blast. -
I've only played CODMW, MW2 and BO from the COD series but IMO the online play is great, very addictive, >300 hours worth. Haven't played much of the single player in any of them. Played the Special Ops missions in MW2 with a mate but they were a bit easy, even on veteran.
Played some Zombies in BO recently with a few friends and love it (although the Land of the Dead map (or whatever's it's called) is class.
Played some BBC2 but not as much as COD, as when we try to get two or three players on the same LAN into a game it never works, always at least one person can't connect.
Bought MOH recently in a Steam sale, seems very Battlefield'y but I've only played the multiplayer drunk so can't really offer an opinion on that one yet -
It's a good game, I play MW2 multiplayer every day and for at least 1 hour. It's a fun game to play with friends.

Why do people like WoW? The graphics are dated, and there's plenty of similar games that don't have a monthly fee, and the gameplay hasn't changed at all.
-Well, it's addictive/rewarding features, not too hard to play, and there's TONS of people to play with. -
the amount of people that i see claimin to hate cod you'd think no-one played it anymore..yet its still one of the most played games evry year.
i personally find it too be a decent time killer but its not a game where id spend hours on just if i had 10-20 minutes free.
infact tho only enjoyable part for me is zombies...tho im sorta addicted to zombies...and monkeys
also how is aiming down the sights a bad thing...surely thats more authentic..or do you ike arcade shooters
btw sounds like youd enjoy halo more then cod or bf -
SomeRandomDude Notebook Evangelist
Personally I don't like it because
1) I don't enjoy the gunplay
2) The story is uninspired and cliche'd
3) Campaign is too short
4) Too repetitive
5) Every game is the same -
Less kids would play it that for sure.
You play delta force you should know, I mean in Black Hawk Down, you don't constantly use aim down sight, in call of duty you use aim down sight way too much. Games like Delta Force series was mostly using hip firing and aim down sight, whereas call of duty hip firing is kinda lame really. It hard to explain without video.
I always wonder why Novalogic hasn't release any new game. They make such good game and they make my favorite fps game. I also feel that both gamespot and ign are very biases to Novalogic game giving them a low 7.0 when I would give them a 9.0!
Delta Force Black Hawk Down is one of those few game base on the movie that excel! Call of duty is like shooting wave of soldier, while Delta Force BFD don't always have wave of soldier, and they don't come at you in horde (like real life) and it the perfect mix of action and simulation, it no where compare to ARMA II simulation but it what all good shooting game to follow. -
What caught my attention in the original post was Joint Operations. I would LOVE an update to Joint Operations. I thought it was better than Battlefield 2 to be honest. Now it's just filled with spammers and hackers. I liked the huge array of verbals you could shout, ability to knife fight in the water, and actually swim under water, driving vehicles on a hovercraft and in a transport chopper (I think you could). So much variety. Was phenomenal at the time, and I think adding these elements in any of the newer games would make it a hit.
-
Modern Warfare 2 has been the best FPS game I have ever played in my life. I hope Battlefield 3 can win me over however.
-
I'm a casual gamer, and with CoD it's easy to hop on and play a quick game.
-
Man when I saw the preview on Joint Operation, it was the first fps game I knew I had to get and never been excited for a game like that. Battlefield 2 got boring quite fast, and it was more popular but no way as hardcore as Joint Operation.
I miss the old day, pc games are dying.
I'm waiting for Delta Force Angelfall if it ever come out, I'll take it over BF3 anyway, cause graphic it is inferior but gameplay wise it bring back past memories. -
The sheer scale of fighting 128 player battles taking place over many different islands, having like 8+ control points. Starting a new match and seeing the convoy of boats/hovercrafts/helicopters. Something worthy of the word epic (which has lost all value nowadays). Man I sound old
-
Counter Strike on steroids.
-
Waiting for Delta Force: Angelfalls if it ever come out, still hoping it will. -
I play CoD because it's fun. It's not the most technologically advanced game, nor the most graphically beautiful. It doesn't really do anything new, either, and the gameplay isn't particularly deep. But it's fun, and that's why I play games...to have fun. -
-
I loved the Delta Force games, but I vehemently disagree with your argument that they were more immersive. Each mission was this:
Insertion->Objective (pick up briefcase/plant satchel charge/rescue hostage)->Extraction
That's it, there was no real story. They were fun games, definitely, but the AI was straight up retarded and there was no complexity or setpiece moments that felt suitably epic. -
I don't know why people care so much about having bad AI, Black Hawk Down was one of the most intense fps game out there. If you don't watch your corner you could get kill easily by an RPG or you fail a mission if you don't protect your convoy. Beside Call of Duty let you re-spawn a few feet from where you die. -
^So you're saying difficulty = quality?
-
Why do people like Call of Duty?
