No matter what driver I use with RivaTuner, the speeds I choose never stick when I try to test it. Any insight into this? How do you get the overclock settings to actually take effect using Rivatuner? I have tried many different drivers!!!

Have you upgraded your system memory without a fresh install of Windows? Cause I had this problem after upgrading RAM.

The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
It always works for me.But I normally use it to monitor in game temps.

Try reinstalling the drivers...
@Cheeseman: Why do your avatar remind my of the planters peanuts mascot? -
Does not work as in does not OC at all or it does not maintain the clocks after OCing ?
You need to the the drop-down box where the card name is set to Plug and Play monitor, if you can`t OC.
If the clocks reset, you need to set it to start automatically via startup registry. -
Ive actually gone through this before, where the sliders reset after you click OK. Not all drivers are OC' able
I bet you havent tried using 169.04 . This was the last OC'able driver for HP's and other cards. What laptop is it?
Make sure you use driversweeper in safemode to clean out the drivers properly -
Has anyone had this problem with 174.74 driver? -
When I use RivaTuner it does the same thing. Except my settings stick after pressing apply. For some reason I don't see any FPS or 3DMark06 scores budge at ALL. I can overclock or underclock any amount and nothing changes.
I've tried all the drivers out there, I guess some computers just aren't ok with OCing. -
Shadowfate Wala pa rin ako maisip e.
The only thing that works in Rivatuner for me is its
"Enable hardware overclocking" checkbox(without this my games runslower than with it having been checked) -
I have a MBP with the 256mg 8600gt card. The OC values will stay in rivatuner, however, when I use an independent program to read clock speeds it does not show that I have OC, nor is there any change in 3dmark06. Rivatuner, simply does not work on my MBP.

Certain brands can only OC with specific drivers. Have you given older drivers a go? eg. HP's cant OC with drivers over 169.04. Its coded in the vBIOS

Using a Macbook Pro Penryn here, facing the same issue. The clocks stay after setting the clock speed, but there's absolutely no performance boost. Even after restarting RivaTuner the clock speeds are still there. I used 169.04 & 174.74 drivers, but neither works with RivaTuner 2.08. To be honest, the main reason why I found this thread was because I suspect this might be a Macbook Pro specific problem with RivaTuner.
ATITool works perfectly fine though, but sadly it doesn't seem to work anymore now that I'm using Windows Vista. Back when I was using XP, RivaTuner couldn't overclock with 169.04 whereas ATITool could perfectly. I'm downgrading back to XP next week just so I can overclock again. -
The author of RivaTuner specifically said Rivatuner doesn't support mobile chips.
 -
Hmm...Googled the problem and it seems that other people with Macbook Pros are facing similar problems. I downloaded nTune and it works well though. May not hop back to Windows XP after all.

I've found the same exact issue with my MBP! However my remedy was searching and downloading Rivatuner 2.04 which actually does overclock the card well. If you guys can find this version, it should work perfectly fine with your MBP 8600M GT
Why doesn't RivaTuner ever work?
