Simply put, why doesn't the futuremark website have a hall of fame, top list of laptop benchmarks?

We aren't yet considered relevant, because our "high-end", is barely the mid-tier of desktop performance.

    My guess.

Well, it would be nice to see them separated, desktops and laptops. Funny thing is, I was configuring an old Shuttle box with spare parts (Sempron 2400+, 2GB DDR400, 240GB HDD, 6600 GT, nForce 2 audio) and ran 3DMark03 just to see how well it performed. Well, I got on there and my score was just over 7000, and some goofball had to run 3DMark03 with a quad core overclocked with an overclocked HD 4890 and got something like 177000 points. Why do people do this?

Well....those are enthusiasts who do the really hardcore overclocking with insane cooling (dry ice or liquid nitrogen)

The hall of fame is basically a way for them to show off their cooling and OCing skills...

and how would you consider something a laptop?

does a 20pound desktop replacement that has a 1 hour battery and can be mobile(yet possibily containing desktop parts), considered a laptop?

Right, but why run 3DMark03 and register your results? Why not 3DMark06 or better yet Vantage? 3DMark03 means nothing for rigs of that caliber, and only taints the results.

It should be easy to determine based on chipset and CPU. I'm talking machines designed to be laptops, not a desktop hacked together to be a portable PC.

It's kind of like asking how do you determine the difference between a car sedan and a pickup truck. There may be one or two that are hybrids, everything else is cut and dry.

I dont class liquid nitrogen or dry ice as being anything good to be honest, just having enough power for 1 or 2 tests doesnt really prove anything.

The idea is quite good though, seperate the laptops :D

people do build their own laptops... how can someone classify a CPU as desktop or laptop, when people DO put desktop CPUs in laptops(such as dell/acer)... it's kinda a fine line

Like I said 99% (or more) of laptops use mobile parts, mainly motherboards and CPU's. Put those oddball ones in with the desktops, since they most likely will have performance more on par with them. I wouldn't NOT differentiate because of a small percent of the population.

If it was such a fine line then there wouldn't be such a huge disparity in performance between desktops and notebooks to begin with.

Well I don't know a single laptop on the planet that's twenty pounds lol, maybe a steel chassis laptop ;) lol... anyway A laptop even as heavy as the M17x at 12 lbs, is always going to be lighter than a desktop and easier to at least move around than a 30lb smallest desktop like a slim xps... however most powerful machines weigh 50-100 lbs

I used to use a Shuttle for my portable gaming needs. Only did a LAN event half dozen times a year. It weighs probably only 20 lbs. fully configured with powerful components. But yeah, SLI or Crossfire rigs with high end CPU and appropriate cooling will weigh a decent amount.

Notebooks and laptops are not the same thing.

Laptops aren't built for serious gaming power.

They are essentially the same thing. Maybe 20 years ago there was a distinction. These days they're interchangeable. It's more netbook and notebook/laptop than anything else.

Just for the record, I believe notebooks were deemed to be smaller and lighter than a laptop since the term "notebook" coined after a small thin package. "Laptop" means any PC that can be used on your lap. But really it's splitting hairs these days and you'll get varying arguments either way. For all intents and purposes they're interchangable.
