Is it really true that the 8000s are worse than the 7000s (worse meaning in performance)? I'm in the market for a laptop for college in the fall, and I have recently been drawn into the frenzy of the new Dells, but rumor has it that they are going to be equipped with 8400Ms and 8600Ms that are supposedly inferior to the current Dell graphics cards. If someone confirmed this, I would go online and buy an e1705 today, but they aren't offering them with the 7900gs anymore. I think my best bet would be to find a deal on one with a 7900gs in the Dell outlet store. Does anyone think I should wait for the new ones, because I really want a new one, I just want a good card too (moderate to heavy gaming).

Umm. What gives you the idea they are worse than the 7 series? Because they aren't.
-
yes they are, read a couple forums posts, the only think that 8M series are good for is DX10 other than that a 7950 GTX can beat aynthing
-
The 8000 series isn't worse in performance, it's slightly better; However, the increase is not nearly as much as people and techs wanted, thus the bad rep it's tending to get.
-
the 8 series is much better, but the entire series is no tout yet so comparing cards like the 7950 to the 8600 is not fair. Once the full series is releases like the 8800gt then the 8 series will dominate the 7 series. Also, the med range 8600 is almost as good as the high end 7 series 7900.
-
I think the 8600mGT being comparable to a 7900 is pretty good. The 8800m isn't even out yet, and I'm sure it will be better than the 7950GTX.
-
Wow that was fast. So would it be better to get an old dell with a 7900gs or a new one with an 8600m?
-
I think getting a 8600GT is a better idea - though it seems that 7900GS has disappeared from the DELL online ordering so there might not be much of a choice here.
-
Well like i said, you can still get a sweet deal (sub 1000) on a e1705 with a 7900gs (2gb ram, 1.73 core duo, 120 gb hd) on dell's outlet store.

I know that the GPU on the e1705 is modular and can be replaced with 7900GTX or 7950GTX supplied by DELL. Call DELL up and ask them whether the 8000 series for 17" laptops will be replaced in the same format.

Do we know when the next batch of new 8 series cards are coming out for laptops? No point in people wasting money now, when they can wait a few months..

If I got a notebook with Go7400, how long will it last b4 i need to replace it with a Go8xxx series?
-
Um, also we need driver updates for teh 8600 to get even better
-
8600M GT is as good as a 7900GS, and with more driver updates it can be better (also 8600M GT OC's great).
-
I have notebooks with both the 7900GS and 8600GT. I've been impressed with the 8600, particularly given it is available in 15" notebooks. It's right up there with the 7900GS, plays games like F.E.A.R., LotR online, and more with no problem.
I don't think we've seen the end of the 8xxx series just yet ... but that's pure speculation. Gotta think something will be out to best the 7950GTX. -

people had too high of hopes for the 8X00 series. So that would make you think that they are worse, but no, they are quite a bit better. Hands down, go the with 8X00.

Why is the nVidia 8M series worse than the 7 series?
