Am I the only one who see this trend in video games? Even in Minecraft, you go around kill the creepers. Almost all FPS games involve aggressive actions except portal... that's the only one I could think of.
What makes you guys tick?
-
A lot of people like doing things in games that they know they can't do outside of games. Hence, the popularity of FPS, racing, etc games.
-
Because it's fun
. It is true that most games involve some sort of violence. Thee are however exceptions like simulators, racing games, some nice games etc. I'd say it's easier to make a game revolving around a story where you have to defeat enemies. What do you consider violence by the way, Mario jumping on turtles and upwards or shooting people and above?
My preferred games are the ones that tell an involving story regardless of the level of violence. I suppose that's why i played many RPGs. I also like platforming, some sandbox games and the race & destroy genre (mario kart and co.). I also like the occasional hack & slash and beat em all games.
List of things i usually enjoy in a game:
Involving story/characters
Interesting art design opposed to striving for as much realism as possible
Games that aren't too easy as in that they are feasible, but you have to get a decent mastery of the game mechanics, adds a rewarding feeling to executing actions properly.
Some violent ones, good outlet for frustration. Think god of war.
List of things i do not enjoy:
Too much sexuality in a game to make it "mature"
Gratuitous violence like manhunt, at least give a half decent pretext for all that violence -> Kratos being angry is enough...
The usual poorly coded/full of bugs mess -
these games:
bulletstorm
dead space series
gears of war series
assassins creed series
its fun. literally, you let out all the stress from work etc. because i can't just let my stress be out by 'Happy Thoughts'. noted that that game should have at least with fun and good content aside from the violence. -
Except Portal? What did you do to all the turrets? And GLaDOS?
You monster.

Its pretty obvious why, it sells.
Not a complicated question or answer.
What makes me tick?
Caffeine, lots of it. I mean a really unhealthy amount that would kill a lesser man. I can drink a monster energy drink and then go to sleep right after with no effect. -
ViciousXUSMC have you considered the long term effects of coffee consumption?
Anyway I think a factor is the media, TV, radio, news paper - loaded with violent stories.
I would not spend 1 minute of time on violent games.
This is not directed at anyone here but many young children are brainwashed in some cases. In these cases thank god for the games as they provide an outlet for their madness. -

Yeah I think about the long term effects of caffeine.
Then I think about the short term effect of not having it... the whole die in a fire thing kinda has me sticking with a bad habbit.
Truth be told though I have a high tolerance to everything, from alcohol to pain killers so its kind of normal for me. Things that alter my natural state of mind and body have much less effect on me than on others. -
Most games without aggressive actions are boring as hell. It's not a "trend" in video games, it's something that's been a part of video games since the beginning. Eating ghosts in Pac Man, blowing aliens up in Asteroid, Missile Command, etc.
Why would you want to play a game where everyone is nice to each other? You can do that in real life. -
BF3 is also a GOOOOOOOD stress killer
-
The Sims!
-
Well, the Sims is sort of fun when you amass fabulous wealth and buy lavish awesome things. I got bored of it, though. The original was ok, but I never even tried 2 or 3.
It was cool that it appealed to guys and girls. -

is pokemon counted as killing?
-
killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
I remember times when I would build four walls qround my Sim and would furnish this space with wooden tables. Then I would put a firework launcher in the middle of the room and command my Sim to launch it. When the rocket goes down I would ignite some table. Eventually the fire would spread and every mutha...., including Sim, would BURN!
You know that's most frustrating? Not the violent games, but the stupid governmental laws which censor the .... out of games. Here I am, home from hard day of studying at uni, wanna play some game, to kill some zombies and relax, but I can't, because some a...holes decided to cut half of the content and now I'm even more frustrated than I was before I came home from uni... And devs wonder, why piracy exists. Well I tell ya, that's why... -
I'm confused as to why Germany has such draconian censorship laws when it comes to video games.
-
because deep down all of us have a dark secret inside......
me personally i like to play with fire and blow things up -
killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Maybe government doesn't want for people to have fun... -
Untill you can bang an 8 ball of coke and do a bunch of hookers, sheesh your a lightweight mortal compared to Charlie Sheen.
-
I really like Sim City 3000, watching bigger more awesome buildings show up.
-
I like the puzzles in games. Figuring out how to navigate the maps, how to open locked doors, making gadgets to use out of things you find in the environment. Ya the killing can become a bit tedious sometimes. Especially when you meet a boss thats tough to kill. I am 51 years old and I love gaming. I own a PS3 and several gaming laptops and several gaming PCs. I hope to game untill I die. I love it. My wife cant understand it, she gets vertigo real bad trying to watch me game. Once I was playing COD MW4 the part in the airport where you slaughter the civilians and my wife was watching over my shoulder. She was not impressed with me at all. Hey you cant do that in real life, but I think of all the people who have screwed me over and put there faces on them and shoot away. Its satisfying.
-
I didn't shoot anyone during that part. I just shot TV screens and chairs.
I think it would be an interesting psych experiment to have people play that level. -
What would be more interesting is have a webcam scan your face and put it on many of the civilians.
That part of the game didn't bother me. They're all pixels to me. -
killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
This actually happened IRL some time after game been released, not the shooting, but explosion took place last year in Domodedovo Airport... -
I find the idea of it disturbing, which I'm pretty sure was the intent.
Another thing that bothers me is actually the stealth knife kill animations in BF3 (the ones where you steal their dogtags). Doesn't bother me when I take out a Russian, but I don't particularly like being on the Russian team. -
I dunno, maybe I've just grown numb in my crotchety old years. Nothing seems to phase me much any more.
-
I think it's the realism of it and the plausibility. Creeps me out. The part in the BF3 campaign wherewas really upsetting to me. I guess I see characters more as real and less as just pixels.Miller gets killed

GUNS, BLOOD, DEATH, VIOLENCE,FIRE,BOMBS,ROCKETS!
AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!
I do like a violent game. Release some anger. -
It's a video game. I'm mature enough to know the difference between a game and reality. Call of Duty just wouldn't be the same if you had to engage all hostile targets with diplomacy. Plus, dying and game over just go so well together.

Originally for the same reason that Japan has to pixelate pornography.
(The US made them do it after WWII). -
Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
This question delves deep into a persons psyche. Just look at the bystander effect in this photo.
This to a gamer is more like this:
-
Either it's a yoga move or that dude's head is doing some weird Poltergeist thing.
-
Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
Ya, lol He clearly has his head on backwards.
-
Wat and wat?
I have a really, REALLY hard time believing this is the case. -
Humans are a warlike, violent species. Evolved from apes and a harsh natural reality.
-
The Allied Forces basically wrote their constitutions. Note that this obviously doesn't answer why they still have this kind of censorship.

No different than reading a book of watching a movie that involves violence.
-
killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Well I would understand censoring violent games, but why pr0n? I mean, it's the whole point of pr0n to see, ehem, the whole, uhmmm... process, if you can't see anything (lulz
), it's useless.
And wasn't WWII a while ago, there were no violent video games in 1945, how could US force Germany back then to censor them... -
Talking badly about violence in video games is a hypocrisy unless you eat synthesized food or remains of organisms that died of old age. Do you?
-
Laws are very often applied to domains they weren't originally intended to regulate/govern. You'll need to ask a lawyer for a proper explanation.
Also, look at the second link. Article 5, paragraph 2 which governs (video game) censorship in the German Basic Law is like one sentence and isn't very specific. All the (newer) details are handled by the Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons. -
Anno 2070 actually looks pretty awesome and as far as I know it doesn't involve killing and abusing, well maybe our planet.
Anno 2070? on Steam
I may keep my eye on this for a rock bottom sale. -
The reason why I like point and click. Take your time at a slow pace and no killing, or not much anyway.
-
The world is full of violence... art imitates real life.
Besides, if a single real person isn't killed because someone got to take out their aggressions in a game instead of in reality, isn't it worth it? -
I'm suspecting the OP's point being that there's little variety. All games seem to be similar. Killing! Killing a lot. Not enough thinking, not enough story etc. Just kill what's in front of you. I like to kill stuff in games too, sometimes, but lately one fps games looks and acts the same way as the next.
-
Maybe its fulfilling an old primal need to Hunt. Actually if you lvling up these games could be akin to some Hunter/Gatherer needs I guess.
-
I've read these posts and I agree with the idea that in a virtual world you're able to do everything imaginable without real consequence. It's why I was largely hooked on GTAIII in high school because it fascinated me that I was able to get a sniper rifle, walk in front of a car, melt the drivers face with a .50 cal and, if no cops were around, walk off with everyone screaming.
That's totally separate from anything a sane rational person would ever imagine doing in the real world. It's part of our nature to be curious and to fulfill that curiosity by way of virtual ESPLOSIONS and mayhem is a good thing as long as you can separate that world from the real world we live in. =D
Why most games involve killing/abusing?
