I never had a lot of interest in MMORPG's mainly because of the monthly fee, time required to invest in it, but more importantly it seems almost all of them are fantasy based. I know about Eve Online but that's way too slow paced.
I am a big Star Trek and BSG fan, but I know chances of seeing an MMORPG from one of them is pretty slim.
Anyone know of a decent MMORPG coming out sometime in the next year that is sci-fi or space based?

ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
aint they releasing a Star gate MMORPG? or has it been canned?
-
Star Wars Galaxies?
http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/
Nope!

ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
what nope about star gate? did it get canned? i cant access the site.
-
Sorry, a bit vague, lol.
I read that it is still due for release this year.
The site worked for me.
-
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
oh cool, nah its banned college bans every site even the ones we need lol
-
Pshaw, you need it for..
astronomical simulation.
-
There was talk of a star trek MMO but the company developing it lost thier right to so its in the air. A good site to read is mmorpg.com, it'll talk about any and all MMO's out or even being talked about.
Tabula Rasa is probably the only other sci fi based MMO out atm, though I dont know if I would call it such, its a bit of a hybrid MMO/action shooter game. It also bored me fast, alot to see and do... for the first day, then nothing.
You already mentioned Eve which is the only other one I can think of atm. SWG is dead. -
I tried Tabula Rasa. That was boring as heck. Even PC Gamer mag did an article on six free MMORPG's, and all were fantasy based. This doesn't interest me much, unfortunately.
-
Yeah not really much in the sci fi market for MMO's. Was a shame about Star Trek but the company was killing probably the best feature of it and quickly lost thier fan base (wanted to remove walking around the ships.)
Your only alternative for a sci fi fix is RTS and FPS. Not sure if either of those work for you but Sins of a Solar Empire is an awesome game, and I went into it thinking I wouldnt like it because it wasnt enough like Gal Civ's for me.
I just thought of 1 more MMO thats sci-fi based, Anarchy Online. Only played it a little and it didnt interest me, not sure if you have looked into it. -
Anarchy Online has come a long way since its release.
-
I remember trying Anarchy Online, I don't think I liked it, lol.
What they need is a KoToR MMO.
-
if you can withstand a bit of anime styled mmo then try out RF Online. And maybe in 2 or 3 years the Firefly MMO might be here, Multiverse are still yet to get a developer.
-
Here's a few I've been following. Some are still in development while others are live now:
Jumpgate: Evolution
Black Prophecy
Earthrise
Face of Mankind
Vendetta Online
Stargate Worlds
Whether they're "decent" or not only time will tell.
And fwiw, there is an all new EVE Online 2 planned in the future. The current version of EVE is difficult for noobs to get into because of all the established players and corps (guilds). So hopefully EVE 2 will put everyone back on a level playing field. -
There will be a new star wars MMO. It was listed on Biowares website as a new project.
I hope Firefly comes to be an MMO. I'm not sure the western feel of the show/movie will translate properly though. Thats what I loved about Firefly so much... it wasn't so much sci-fi as it was a western cowboy type show based in space. -
Firefly: America's version of Cowboy Bebop.
And yes, as a huge Firefly fan, I too wait with bated breath for a Firefly mmo. -
And wait... how about a Ghost in the Shell MMO? That would be... very hard to pull off. <3 cyber punk. -
Whats the story behind Earthrise? I haven't heard about it until now and the website doesn't really give a good indication of how the game will play. It seems 'homebrewish.'
-
First off, let me state, that I'm an idiot. Because I searched it on google again and found a site about farming, and just started reading wondering why in the hell anyone would play a game about farming...
"In 1979, after years of research, Earthrise® introduced Spirulina to the natural foods market. Then, in 1982, the visionaries at Earthrise built the first U.S. Spirulina farm..."
Yea ... I am THAT dumb.
From: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/331
It is rated the same as Warhammer.
"In the aftermath of the Third World War, mankind has managed to survive and build a new society: the prosperous city of Sal Vitas. Cloning, nanotechnology and quantum engineering are part of a new reality. Thanks to these technological advances, the human species has become immortal; each individual’s consciousness is stored in a data vault, ready to be uploaded into a cloned body as necessary. New energy sources have been discovered. There is a unified government that takes good care of those citizens who abide by its strict laws. Paradise, it appears, might really have come to Earth, and the people have embraced it.
But not everything is as perfect as it appears. By exercising full control over the cloning process, Sal Vitas' government decides who will live and who will not, playing the role of God on Earth. Insurgent forces have accused the city's rulers of crimes against humanity. Armed factions fight for resources and power within the new system. And from the waves of discontent, a rebellion has fomented and formed a shadow government: Noir.
Featuring a unique skill-based advancement system and player-driven economy, as well as extensive, meaningful player-vs.-player combat, Earthrise gives you innumerable choices to forge your destiny. Whether you're a noble soldier in the raging conflict between the Utopia and the rebellion, a criminal hiding from the law or a world-renowned engineer whose power extends into intricate trade and politics, your actions will echo throughout the game world." -
Space Cowboy Online!
-
Uhh, Eve Online? Matrix online? SW:Galaxies?
-
Uhh...those have been mentioned already and the OP already knew about EVE. Thanks for playing, tho'. -
Freelancer. Space sim MMORPG. I stopped playing it after I got my battleship though (the Rhineland for those in the know lol).
-
Freelancer is not an MMO. It is a single player game with a multiplayer component.
-
-
Warhammer would have been great if it was released in 2000.
For new fantasy genre mmo's being released I think Age of Conan will be the winner. -
You can try Air Rivals, the game was originally called "Space Cowboy", but changed company and names for like three times, and now ended up with the current company under the name Air Rivals.
-
Planetside was wicked fun MMOFPS sci-fi action.
Startrek MMO is in limbo. Fallout MMO hasn't even been announced (though it will). StarWars Galaxies isn't so much fun anymore. Eve is decent, but slow. Tabula Rasa gets boring. City of Heroes is fun.
Cowboy Bebop is essentially America's Anime. It is the single most useful tool for US anime lovers because the dub was actually well done, so the show can be used to entice non-anime fans into understanding/enjoying anime from a non-pokemon-hellokitty perspective (often stereotyped with those).
I found Cowboy Bebop better than Firefly, but Firefly was a kickass epic space-western in its own right. -
I don't understand the hype behind Warhammer. The game doesn't seem to offer anything new to the MMO genre. The whole realm v. realm isn't revolutionary (see DoAC). None of the other pvp features of warhammer seemed that original to me either. What is it about the game that has people so hyped?
-
-
Thanks Irrational. Looks half-way decent. Funny how it's gone through so many names. I might give it a shot.
-
I don't think Age of Conan is going anywhere with the terrible stress test turnout. I just don't think the interest is there. -
Just wait for Black Prophecy
-
If there was a Fallout or Diablo MMORPG it would be all over for me
-
Please blizzard? PLEASE?
*edit*
NM... it is NOT a rumor that they are working on a new MMO. It's on their websiteJust look at job postings. Rated as *TOP SECRET*

hellgate london
-
That and 3 times I played through it, I made level 2 on the way to the subway twice... Even though I killed everyone on the way there, one of my plays didn't hit level 2. Very weird.
It's a neat game... I just didn't feel it was worth buying... Until maybe it hits $30. -
I haven't played it but how about
sins of a solar empire.
Not sure about monthly dues/game play but it's an mmorpg set in space. It's worth a look and seems cool. I'm just not into those types of games. -
http://www.champions-online.com/
By the makers of city of heroes/villians. the graphics r rly cool. cell shading stuff like cartoons -
- Subscribe to World of Warcraft
- Create a Paladin, Rogue, or Magic User character
- Hang out in Duskwood for 70 levels.
- Voila! Diablo MMO!
-
-
And I've already done that! -
Hellgate London had a lot of hype around it and it let a lot of people down. It's fun for the first couple days, but it's no where near the same level Diablo 2 was.
As someone said, way too repetitive. All the "towns" are subway stations that look exactly the same. The combat areas only had a couple tilesets also.
The class skills system is pretty bad. I actually liked in Diablo 2 that if you wanted to be really effective, you had to specialize heavily in certain skills. Not so in Hellgate. In Hellgate, skill damage scales to your level and all your characters just end up the same. The only thing Hellgate does right is items.
And WoW just doesn't have the same feel as Diablo -

Thanks.
So whats it like? You just go around and create your own game? That's unique?
Why no Space Based or Sci-Fi MMORPG's?
