I just realized how huge and heavy the 17" laptops are. Can't even use them on planes it appears! Why did you get one instead of PC? LAN parties? Or is it because big and heavy laptops are still laptops and can be easily transported?

my laptop is a 17 inch and is very thin and light....oh and it has a 970m in it
-
i take my laptop to and from work with me. sometimes to a coffee shop. i game when i'm at home.
-
they dont have to be a huge to be a beast as i have a 14" laptop with 970m and that suitable for everything you mentioned and its only 1.8kg
i like the form factor so using the size is nothing to me and i can just hook it up to one of my tvs around the house if i want to just kick back on a larger screen or just enjoy my own personal space somewhere and call it mancave and just use the 14" screen. never will own a desktop. -
I went with the 17" form factor because i like big and bulky.
Nah i got my 3DS and PS Vita if i need something more portable. Just like having a big screen to play games on.
-
Want a big screen, a large keyboard, and a nice cooling
I take it to my student 'home' + classroom and in the family's house -
I got mine because I like to only keep one PC, and when home I can game to my heart's content, as I can when I'm out and about. I don't expect to do much on battery, but while I had university classes they lasted the two hours or so of class and when there were 2-3 hours inbetween classes I could just play a nice single player game of some kind.
I don't need to walk around with a monitor or keyboard, and it fits in my backpack along with books/lunch/accessories when I do need to go out for a day or so. Unfortunately my bag is at its last legs, but maybe soon an Everki Titan replacement might be a thing. -
mines only 14" so i can actually use it on my lap. you can sit there with large 17 inch laptops and get very and stay very comfortable though. plus i dislike number pads. i like that the return button is on the end of the keyboard with out looking for it.

Well, I didn't use 17.3 inch before and really wanted it try. The people said playing games, watching films will be better bla bla bla but in the end, I didn't notice much difference than 15.6 inch. It is just heavier and huge. 15.6 inch would be good enough for me. Also, I don't like FHD resolution neither in 17.3 inch nor 15.6. My eyes were about to blind If I didn't change the DPI setting of Windows 7. The cooling and the storage options could be better in 17.3 inch.

the cooling is probably the only thing i can give you there but from my experience only asus do it well.
i possessed a g73jh it was MASSIVE! i only had it to move it on. i didnt play games on it because i didnt want to feel "inadequate" after going back to what i had after sampling that kind of gpu power i think it was the 5870m vs 9600m gt i was using.
if the 15 ich is a big 15 inch you might not so much notice going up to 17" but for some reason ive ended up going backwards. i have 15"s and went down to as low as 11.6" and like its forma factor but needed more oomph and went up. then 13.3" was the perfect medium of small but with good gaming performance which i found with the 6630m and upgraded the i5 to i7 and just loved the machine but hardware just got outdated. after that i started looking for laptops that was 13.3" but only found one that was good for a bit but found flawes in the quality so i ended up with a 14" so now my laptop sizes in width is between 32-34cms wide MAX wide(love the form factor paired with gpu power). and this is what i ended up with and im actually happy with it for once considering it was a "business model" that had the perfect build but weaker midrange gpus so my p34w is very good personally to impress as it is. but unlike you i did notice the screen size differences.
that being said it would be nicer to game on a larger screen. just too bad its tied to a larger body. im just never going to get used to all that surface area all over me or not because its just too big
Although theres better storage options i do have 1tb msata ssd and 1tb hhd so thats more than plenty even if its all the slots i have used. -
Laptops are PCs.
I never understand why some people use 'PC' as a synonym for exclusively desktops only.
Seems the actual meaning is being lost. PC = Personal Computer. Ask the average gamer and I bet they wouldn't realise that though!jaug1337 and katalin_2003 like this. -
I have my big beast since I have a semi-permanent living arrangement in Japan. I can move back home when I'm ready alot easier with a heavy laptop as apposed to a heavy desktop.
-
I like the big screen for work. I don't care much about portability. I move it every day with my backpack. Yes, it's heavy and bulky but I like it. If I could get this kind of power in a thin/light that had upgradable parts I would jump all over it.

+1 on 1 main computer~
There are big 17" and small 17"s~ compare asus g series/AW with some other 17" , huge difference imo.Starlight5 likes this. -
I love having a big ass laptop. Honestly, if it wasn't such a waste for what I already own, I'd buy one of those GT80 behemoths. Hell, may still even do it... and then I'll buy a 14" thin and light for actual travel. Maybe a razer blade.
I just love gaming.Ramzay likes this. -

Whereas I too don't like those bulky AW/ASUS G/etc. gaming laptops and would rather go for desktop+Win8 tablet instead, but if they exist and sell, it means that there is a market for them and it's always great that there's a wide selection of products for us users.
-
As for my on-topic opinion, I think the reason is quite simple. Thicker laptops provide better cooling for more powerful GPUs and larger screens help to provide a more immersive experience. 17.3" laptops, while a lot less portable than 15.6" laptops (and below), are waaaaaaaaaaaaasaaaaaaaaay more portable and compact than even a mini ITX desktop + desktop monitor. So yeah, that's why these products exist

I don't find them that big. I've used em on planes before, trains and when I was doing database/web management, I transported the machine to and from work. Was never an issue for me. I've never desired to use laptop away from a power source, away from a desk, I have better things to do.
But will admit I won't consider Asus ROG since they are obnoxiously big and their cooling system isn't as good as MSI or Clevo and its not.much quieter, its a dumb gimmick that just makes the laptop absurdly big when 17" laptops are already large. -
-
Even deagleson who bought latest.model was surprised at how much bigger Asus is to Clevo. -
Well not company, not a fan of the G ROG laptop.

I think it depends on the specific model of laptop, but there are plenty of 17 and 15 inch notebooks which are both powerful and portable enough for relatively comfortable mobile use.
Sure, a 13 inch is much easier to carry and throw in your bag, but it'll never match up to the performance of a larger notebook. I think most of us into buying powerful 15 and 17 inch notebooks are willing to compromise for performance vs. portability and comfort as a desktop replacement.
Reddit is famous for its anti-notebook gaming stance and they constantly troll anyone who wants to use a notebook for serious gaming. So much for the PC master race being one homogeneous community. They should be called desktop master race. . .In my opinion it's a very pretentious and immature holier-than-thou attitude they have. -

By the way, it's nice to see you again. I don't think I saw you here for a while. -
I just didn't have enough space for a full blown desktop, and by the time I got the space I was just hooked on them. Hence, my current beast.

Thank you, kilkenny. It has been a long time, it's nice to see you still here as well.killkenny1 likes this. -
I got mine simply because I wanted a gaming laptop as I wasn't planning on building a PC at the time (that changed but the PC isn't even hooked up) and a laptop works perfectly for the small space I have in my room. I don't transport it anywhere. It's my "do everything when my phone can't do it" device.

Whining about how big gaming laptops are but posting in Sager forum about buying the thickest 17" laptop, Clevo with SLI. You don't get laptop gaming but going to throw down 3000$ or more to play console ports? And then expounding about how 1600 ram been ttlenecks and you have to have 8gb ram to play console ports.

Although the 5870m was good, comparatively the 980m is a stronger GPU in every way. Now my expectations are four years from the 980m if past is prologue. As it concerns proportionality between the 5870m and 980m in regards to the contemporary games of each card, the 980m is far ahead of the 5870m in terms of being able to handle the work cut out for it. The 5870m was never a good card for 1080p, but did well long term for 900p [...as was the native resolution of the Bestbuy version of the G73]. The 980m is a relatively capable 1440p card asked to take care of 1080p and that's before the DX12 boost factors in.
I prefer the higher end "beasts" laptops for their potential to be a long term gaming "work horse".TomJGX likes this. -
Former G73JH and 5870M owner here as well. There was nothing wrong with the 5870M except its tendency to run hot out of the box, which was easily solved with a repaste.

The 5870m wasn't exactly cool @ 40nm. I put velcro around the access panel and took it off when I gamed with the cooler blowing directly into the laptop.
-
Really? After repasting my 5870M barely rose above 80C, and that was with an around 800/1100 OC (can't remember the exact clocks because it's been a few years since I last owned it
).

5870m and 6870m were great GPU's at the time. Looking forward to AMD at least offering comparable packages to Nvidia Maxwell 900m series.

I feel that there is something cozy about gaming laptops. They are much smaller than desktops, portable, and you can hug them. You can't hug PC comfortably. Its a boredom killer. I shall take mine when I travel. I really am addicted to PC's and gaming in general, although I spend more time updating, optimizing my system and modding my games than actually gaming, but once I do get to game, its precious-time.
-
My first laptop was 15.4inch, after that I bought a 17incher and never looked back. Display real estate is an absolute priority for me. Weight and dimensions of a laptop are irrelevant, I don't mind carrying a heavy backpack all day long, everyday.

Portable desktop replacement is not light.

It is once you get used to it..
But on a serious note, they're not the kind of machine you wisk under your arm. -

5870m was a fantastic card. Brother still has his working fine in his old GX660 laptop. He's had zero issues for the 4ish years he had it.

I wouldnt hold my breath guys, apparently the newest amd r9 300 series are rumoued to all be rebadges of existing cards bar the r9 390 which can only further hint towards amd's mobile market taking an even bigger nosedive downwards. If they couldnt introduce new desktop gpu's i dont imagine amd will be introducing new laptop gpu's unless the laptops are all modelled off the 390's architecture which i dont find likely
Why you be gaming on such beasts?
