Why's everyone so obsessed with gaming? - I mean there's so much more to do on a computer and you don't need to buy all the expensive graphics of stuff like Web Development!!!

You know a majority of people who develop web pages?

Entertainment. Kill the time. As we no longer hunt for our food our energies need to be used up in another way? Who knows

Who is to say what is worthwhile. That is subjectivity epitomised

Gaming is a major topic with PCs because games are probably the best benchmark by which to determine a PC's performance. Which makes me wonder -- how many people who buy games (PC games in particular) actually buy them to play, or to benchmark?

The reason I ask is because the core of all games is the gameplay. Sure with a faster videocard you might get an extra tree here and there or get a further view of the horizon, but the core gameplay will remain the same whether or not you have a fast PC or not.

You can do Web development and image editing and still be a gamer. I learned most of the stuff I know about computers because of gaming, setting up servers, building my own PC, gaming computers are among the most advanced PCs out there. Gaming is a passion for many, why do sports when you can take photographs in the nature? Well it's a matter of taste, you can do both too. Stuff is expensive for gaming PCs, but if you have the money.... why not?

PS. The music on your site is VERY annoying. :)

Games have been part of human existence for thousands of years; the question of whether or not a game is worthwhile is beside the point, really. Why are people obsessed with any human experience that isn't necessarily productive? Why do we do anything besides eat, sleep, procreate and work?

Gaming is just like someone taking time to sit down and watching something on tv. Both aren't that productive but they are really nice things to do when you are bored and tired.

Well I think gaming is so popular because its an escape. A place where you can go to, enter the body of another character. Pick up a sword and fight the forces of evil (Or be evil is you so desire).

I don't game in the convensional sense. But I do roleplay on forums and in chatrooms which is a form of gaming in its own right (That requires only an internet conenction and none of the fancy, expensive equipment video gaming does... but I'll try and speak for the real gamers to). I RP as a way to relax, unwind, and escape the whoes of the world. When I play I do pretty much what I said in the first part of this post. Becoming someone else for two hours every other night provides a great way to escape. It is also a chance to flex the mind muscles and use some creativity... while not being anything to serious.

Gaming is a vital and essential part of entertainment, relaxation, and mental stimulation (think about Chess, Tetris, Boggle, etc) Gaming is very old (predates computers by a couple millenia) and very much needed. The computer aspect to gaming is just a new innovation on the method of delivery.

theres a theory i like to use.... buy a computer thats very capable of playing most of todays games even if youre not a gamer because if its capable of that.... just think how well the laptop will perform on everything else.

okay gaming is more fun than making websites
also, after seeing your website, the point is well proven that that was a waste of your time

also, there is better ways to get website hits than starting a bad question on a forum

I'm obsessed with gaming because I like games. ;)

Simple as that. Some people play golf, some collect stamps, some watch soccer matches on TV, some make webpages. I play computer games. ;)
It's a hobby like any other. And like any other hobby, it's always fun to discuss it with others who share the same interest.

That said, it's far from the only thing I use my computer for. I'm a programmer and a computer science student, so I use my computer for all sorts of things.

sticking up for this guy. i will say that playing games is more relaxing. and yes i have made my own site(turned out pretty crap) and got a degree of satisfaction that you don't get from gaming when i got my first 100 hits(probably accidently).

Gaming however gives you a degree of satisfaction when you whoop your mates arse for the first time in a game that he has been bragging about. or getting your character to lvl 10003937659302(inserted random number here) that you just don't get from programming.

All this however is merely opinion and have to say what i enjoy is not enjoyed by everyone else.

If you don't like playing games, don't play them. but just because you don't like them doesn't mean that no one else should eaither.

respect peoples likes and dislikes, it's what makes the world go round.

Yeah but with one site you can't really create objective analysis. With webdesign and programming you can get a lot of satisfaction, it actually is somethine with a purpose, people can use your site, you program more and more complex applications. I am by any means not putting it above gaming, I treat both equally as I do both with passion.

    Nice poll question.

To me, time is a value. To me, programming and image editing is a waste of time. To me, I'd rather pay someone else to do programming (buy their product) or image editing (I'll pay you to edit these images), than do it myself. Because to me, I find that a waste of (liesure) time. I would rather game, work out, listen to music, watch a movie in my liesure time than program or edit images.

This is Agent MICHAEL SCOTT EVERYONE ON THE GROUND! Bang Bang Bang!

Seriously though, like said before gaming is a way to go into another reality. Me, personally, I like it because it gives me something to do, something to work for. Some games are really fun ie Hitman 4 Blood Money. There are so many ways to defeat a level. The first time through I basically shot all the guards and then achieved my objectives. 2nd time through I tried to be more stealthy and wow it was way more fun being stealthy.

Websites with music that cannot be turned off is a violation of the sacred rules of web development.
Even moreso when it's annoying music.
And then you try to put a talking head thing on it too?!?!

theres is no wrong answer here

the computer whether laptop or desktop is just a means to end. So what? thats theres more gamers than image editors or writers or mechanical engineers or whatever the next poll may be.
The computer is just another instrument or tool for a purpose.
I earned the G2 on one shoot and the (most likely) G2S will be from another shoot.
I play games too but i got a better purpose for my laptop and that purpose brings me greenbacks.

What's the point to go on the computer itself?
What's the point to watch TV?
What's the point to go to the movie theatre?

    Answer - Entertainment.
