Seeing a lot of posts with widescreen problems... Does it really cause games to crash because of native resoulutions? If so, can you set it so that it treats the 17 inch wide screen as a 15.4 normal?

15.4 is also widescreen. Do you mean 15 inch normal? I have never experienced game crashes due to non widescreen support, the worst I've seen is a stretched image.
However, your graphics drivers should have options for placing black bars to the sides of your screens (making the visible area non-widescreen) when you run a non-widescreen application.
