One of the nice things about LCDs with 1280*1024 resolution is that you can take advantage of 1280*768 or 1280*720 widescreen resolutions in some games (World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion), which puts a lot less strain on the CPU/GPU, while still giving you a pretty enough picture (with no stretching/interpolation). I know 1440*1050 LCDs can also take advantage of the 1440*900 resolution similarly. But what about 1600*1200 displays?
Do any of you play these games with such displays? If so, is there a 1600*1000 wide aspect option available (or some other wide aspect option that reduces the amount of pixels, but without making the screen all stretch/messed up?
I hope the question makes sense! If I need to be clearer, feel free to let me know![]()

Putting a widescreen resolution on a standard display would cause the image to be stretched vertically. -
Actually, not necessarily. I've not worked with higher than 1280*1024, but with 1280*1024 displays, if the image fits horizontally, in Morrowind or WoW, it will not be stretched vertically (e.g. With 1280*720 and 1280*768 resolutions). So you will have black voids above and below a proper, unstretched widescreen image.

1600x1024 (16:10) and 1600x900 (obviously 16:9) can be easily added if you have nVIDIA card and monitor with native of 1600x1200 or above. ForceWare drivers allow adding custom resolutions. For ATi cards I think PowerStrip needs to be used.
And there's no 1440x1050 resulution , but rather 1400x1050.
DVI connection is necessary to allow black box on top and bottom, and avoid stretching.
Widescreen resolutions on 1600x1200 (nonwidescreen) LCDs
