Everyone is talking about stretching, etc. in games, but what about normal program use? Is everything stretched in Window (e.g. icons, fonts, buttons etc.)?

Things arent stretched in normal use, you just get more horizontal space.

I've been using a widescreen laptop for so long as my sole PC, it feels weird to get onto a computer with a standard monitor.

Games use there own resolution and FOV settings, if you have them set at a widescreen resolution and FOV it will look normal but will a wider view than standard.
Windows has its own resolution settings too, so aslong as you have your res set to the native of your monitor you will have no streching. -
Unfortunately it doesn't work that way with some games. Many games use the resolutions that only Windows supports for your LCD rather than giving you a full range of options in case that X resolution isn't supported by your LCD.
What does this mean? Well, Let's just say on a G1S unless you are running at 1680x1050 you aren't running at widescreen resolution. The rest WILL look stretched out because the rest of the resolutions are 4:3 not 16:9
Which is pretty damn retarded. -
... And that has never happened to me on the multitude of drivers I've tested in both XP and Vista. I've ALWAYS had 16:10 resolutions available in games and in windows.

I have proper scaling in vista with new drivers, just make sure you go into your video card setup in the control panel and turn on aspect scaling.
If you play a 4:3 game you just get the black bars on the side instead of the strech.
I have not once in my life yet had a problem with scaling and widescreen or had to play something streched. The game eather has support or a hack for widescreen, or there is a rather easy way to not have something strech and just get the black bars. -

If your ok with it thats fine, I cant stand it tho. Given some games are worse than others.
Something with very defined objects like 2d games or alot of symetry like circles and things being streched to ovals I cant stand. However most 3d games wont really bother me as much.
I just want everybody to know you dont have to be stuck with the streching and you can have aspect scaling if you want to. -
Odd. Many of you guys like it widescreen. I prefer playing at 3:4 ratio resolutions. I play all my games at 1280x960, except for Oblivion which I play at 1024x768 and CnC3 at 1440x1050 which are both also 3:4. I tried playing CnC3 at 1680x1050 and my other games at 1280x800. I didn't like the widescreen ratio because it feels kinda stretched.

Yeah widescreen i mutch better, its more natural for how your vision works (you see alot wider, so more of your privial vision is use)
I dont know anybody that has gone to widescreen and not liked it better than standard.
Widescreen stretching (again!)
