I'm a D901c user here, and my 8800m gtx I think recently failed. It doesn't show any artifacts or discoloration while loading, but my computer crashes with a solid color of the background wallpaper upon login. I've tried every possible thing from changing OS to using old drivers. I know it's the video card's fault, because I can enter safe mode with no problems and can load my computer fine without the graphics driver (aka using onboard vga thing). Anyway, case in point, all I have yet to try is the oven baking method, but in case that fails, I'm wondering if I can someone get a replacement card for my system. I see that ebay sometimes sells mobile GPUs that belong to other laptops. Are those compatible with my system? Thanks in advance.![]()

It must be the right MXM slot (isn't D901C MXM 2.1 or something?), and it has to have BIOS support from Clevo. You might get a more specific answer by asking in the Clevo forum, but if I remember right, the 9800m GTX is the best you can go.
-
Ah, that's fine. I just really need another graphics card... Not this crappy onboard stuff that lags on youtube videos lol. Thanks for the help. Advice is still welcome on this thread. I'll try making a different thread as well on the clevo area like you suggested though.

2.1 most likely, but which type. don't confuse mxm 2.1 with mxm II or III etc.
need to find which type of slot it has.
http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/Tech_13.html
that will help you find which slot you have and consequently which cards may work. -
Wow that website is gonna help a ton! Thanks! Also, cool avatar! I hope that never happens to me/my laptops.
Edit: Oh quick question; will I fail if I put my video card into the other slot (intended for sli)?
Also, I found out that my card was an HE type card. -
i guess the 2nd slot won't be linked to the displays though so i am gona say no. could be wrong.
with your laptop they have already confirmed an upgrade with a GTX260m and also GTX280m.... how good news is that for you.
edit: buy 2 GTX280m's and SLI them, for the extreme FPS lols. do it. go on. doooooooooo it -
Where to buy them though? From the Sager website?

350for GTX260, 500 for GTX280 its expensive.... not sure if ebay will have any -
Oh thanks for the site! But yea... I live in America so 500 Euros'll be about $600.. Damnzzzz I could buy a small laptop with that... Well, I guess it's gonna be a little bit before I actually have the money for that stuff...
-
You can't use 280m SLi in a D901C. Although, 1 card should work. Safest route is 1x 9800m GTX (or 2x in SLi).
D901C uses MXM 2.1 Type III. -
according to MXM upgrade they use IV.... and have actually tested with gtx200 series cards. i'm gona have to believe them
-
Well... If I'm going to pay for a GPU might as well go for 280m gtx right? less expensive than an SLi.
-
i would get 9800M GTX SLI instead of a single GTX280M since the SLI will be better and would work more likely..
-
Sorry, I know it's Type IV, but the GTX 280m and the others are 2.1 Type III.
I agree with SLi 9800m GTX. I have that combined with a Q9650, and it flat out rules for performance. The only game so far that seems to give it a challenge is BC2. -
the GTX 280m is type HE, which is type III with an extra power tab
can't use it in type III. only in HE and IV
-
Wait but isn't the 8800m gtx in a type HE? Also, where can I buy a cheaper 9800m gtx lol... Also, should I take this silver stuff off when baking my card? http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/Pictures/D900_9.JPG
Will and mobile GPU fit in any custom laptop?
