Depends on how deep you are aiming to know what's going on. Most of the basics should be pretty quick.

I am asking the same question about humans...can't understand them at all.
computers understand me very well though.

i think the better question you need to ask yourself: does it interesting you? ...do computers intriguing your mind?
if the answer is yes, you will catch up fast and enjoy it...and feel very geeky on the way.:GEEK:
if the answer is no, you dont need to suffer so much.

best way to start understanding PC's, build a gaming desktop and learn as you go. Thats what I did when I was about 14 years old.

    Teach the horse to fish?

Seriously though, I learned to build a desktop as I was building it. I then learned to replace a laptop mobo by jumping in and trying (and googling). Get in there and have some fun.

Dude, just sleep with a book on PCs under your pillow. You'll totally reverse-absorb the knowledge through the pillow.

Trial and error is the best teacher. Just don't trial with live electricity too much... it hurts.

We were all in your shoes once, I still have a lot to learn but stick around these forums read and learn.
There are many well informed people here that love laptops/PC's.
Don't be afraid to ask questions no matter how simple they might be, most members will be happy to help.

Didn't your school teach you computer basics? I always knew that the subject should be learned as early as you start showing interest in PC.

I was going to say you'll never understand them because they're like women. They're temperamental, drive you crazy, break down on you at the worse possible times, but also make you happy and keep you occupied for extended periods.

One of my college instructors told me a few things about computers and the IT industry that have always stuck with me. One day he pointed up to the ceiling and basically said this: "You see these ceiling tiles? Each one represents something about computers. See the square right here? That's everything I know about computers. See that square waaaaaaaaaaaaay over on the other side of the room? Well that's something I don't really know about. But here's a nugget of info that you need to realize. If you end up in the IT industry, everybody is going to expect you to know this ENTIRE CEILING!"

So true and probably why it has always stuck with me.

What? The school taught students a combination of computer parts and parts of human body? Shouldn't they separate as subjects? Computers are more complex than humans.
