Hey, this is my first post and i was wondering if anyone could help me out.
I've ordered a Dell XPS M1710 notebook with the following specs:

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7400 Processor (2.16GHz,667MHz,4MB L2 cache)

    2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x1024]

    160GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive

    512MB DDR3 nVidia® GeForce™ Go 7950 GTX graphics card

    Vista Installed

What i want to know is, WILL it run some of the latest and most demanding games on the market (such as Oblivion) so a suitable standard such as medium to high settings? Any responses would be appreciated,

    Steve

It will run Oblivion very well and future games well albeit in dx9 mode rather than the up and coming dx10 mode.

DX10 is kind of in shambles right now, and I personally think we will not see good DX10 stuff until the next round of cards come out.

Another thing i have on my mind, does the graphics card (mine being the 512MB DDR3 nVidia® GeForce™ Go 7950 GTX) have any effect on the performance such as the frame rate etc. or just what is displayed on the screen (such as eye candy and detail).?

For Oblivion you can use larger texture packs without interfering with performance for instance. Oblivion will run very well with your machine, runs very well on my XPS M170 so and you got a better computer than mine.

Your gpu has a huge effect on performance and eyecandy both. Afaik yours is the fastest gpu to date. All 7000 series cards are dx9 while the 8000 series is dx10. Dx10 is supposed to make slower cards do more with less.

The only cards that will beat yours are desktop versions or sli setups(multiple gpu's). You will play oblivion very well. My 8600gt ddr2 runs oblivion at med-high settings, and it is comparable to a 7700-7800 card i believe.

He meant fastest single laptop card in which he was right....plenty of desktop cards that will beat it though, but it's still a great performer that will see you through current games at great settings.
