Like everyone, i was a noobie at computers at first. I thought the graphics card with the most memory was better...(ie. 512>256>128>64>32>16). I understand now that its not ALWAYS the case. I am a little ticked off but whatever.
I find myself with a Sony Vaio FZ290 (which specs are in my sig)
I would like to know how long this laptop will last me.
Here are my purposes:
Moderate gaming (about 1~2 hours a day)
I like to stick to some old games such as Counter Strike Source, but i like new games too like CoD4.
Later on the time i will game on my laptop will be lesser and lesser as i am goin to university soon.
Any suggestions?

My 8400M GS handles COD4 great at medium settings, so you won't have a problem with most games.
-
im wondering how long it will last me (in terms of years). How well will it take some games in the future..im not a hardcore gamer.
-
I buy a new laptop every year to 2 years anyway, if new hardware matters just do the same. Usually only costs me $3-400 net each time I upgrade because of what I get for resale on my old system.

Do you mean "last" until it breaks (from overclocking or whatever), or until it can't play future games at low (or med, or high) settings?
Assuming you meant "last" in terms of playable settings---What is your standard?
Is running a game at 640X480 @ 15 fps acceptable to you? Is running 75% of your games a decent settings, but 25% poorly, if at all, acceptable?
Where do you, personally, draw the line for your standards of what's acceptable? -
I do not expect it to last long. IF you are really concerned, sell it, fort sonys have high resale value and buy a dell vostro with 8600m
-
Hey!
It all depends on how severly you overclock and the amount of heat generated in your computer. Just watch out for high temps (90c+ temps) -
That would be a BAD idea. The 8400GT GDDR3 with decent clock speeds is just as good as an 8600GT GDDR2 (such as in the dell vostro). You should be fine on your screen's native resolution with high-medium settings for two-three years I would say.
-
2 years would be quite ok i think of course lowering setting and resolution as u go on
-
ok good lol thanks guys

Don't count on more than 2-3 years even with light gaming (as long as you fdon't play FPS). Without gaming, 3-4 years.
-
Wait...dont you mean aslong as you dont DONT play FPS?
-
if you mean "last" as been able to play the latest games on low settings i think its about 6month to a year. with and 8400gs I dont even dare to try crysis (a half year old game)
-
I can play crysis at decent settings with atleast 25 fps on...1280x800 i think
-
On my 9500M GS I am able to run Crysis on Very High with the exception of Shadows and Shaders on medium at 1024x768 with no AA and achieve 15-22FPS. Not that the 3dmark score matters, but seeing as how your overclocked 8400M GT scored 3521 in comparison to a score of 3890 on my stock 9500M GS which is pretty darn close, I would guess that an 8400M GT DDR3 could pull off medium-low at 1280x800 well enough.
Will my laptop last?
