Hey - I just ordered a new HP laptop, with 64 mb dedicated memory (and 2 Gig Ram). Does anyone know if that'll play oblivion? Has anyone tried this, and if so how does it turn out?
I don't know if I'd get oblivion for computer or not, since I don't really play much computer games now (although I like sim city 4 a lot!). But whatever games I would ever want to play would be oblivion level or lower. Thakns!

64mb dedicated memory will not play oblivion enjoyably, if at all. It would be an abysmal experience to say the least. The card could play some older games though.

yeah an 8400 gs will not play nice with oblivion.
check out half life 2. your card will rock that. -
Doesn't the 8400 GS have 128mb of dedicated memory? Wouldn't that play Oblivion decently on low settings?

some have 64 and some have 128.

You can probably play it at moderate settings, just not a very high resolution. the 7400 go card can play oblivion, so i'm sure that the 8400 gs will be able to play it as well
-
My go 7600 can play oblivion at low/medium settings at 1024x768 so an 8400gs should easily be able to play low graphic quality at the same resolution, or possibly medium quality at 800x600.

I've seen a 64MB 7400 play Oblivion decently well. You should be fine, but you might have to turn down a few settings.
nVidia's shared memory technology is quite effective, so if you have an allowance for shared memory that's be a little icing on the cake. -
try running oldblivion, its a mod that lets older/weaker GPUs run Oblivion. http://www.oldblivion.com/

wow that oldblivion looks cool, I would maybe play that even on a high end system just for the fps boost

Check out Qarl's texture pack 3. Now that is cool!
-Recommended only for 512 MB dedicated video card drivers. -
Thanks for all your suggestions!

The horror! I might have to turn down a few settings!
There's just such a huge disparity in people's expectations and interpretation of what it means to be capable of "running a game." -
so i take it this means the dell xps 1330 wont be able to handle new powerful games. i guess its not worth it to pay more to try to get an ultraportable then

It's difficult to recommend 13" and smaller model laptops as a primary gaming machine. Especially if you are looking for a laptop with a good amount of future proofing for gaming then you really want at least a 14" model if not a 15.4" model. A primary gaming machine should give you good performance in games as well as whatever level of eye candy you want/can afford.
On small laptops/less powerful gpu's you can sacrifice the eye candy for performance but at that point you're compromising. The issue with buying small laptops or a system with a weak gpu is that the next generation of games (and the one after that and so on) require more and more compromises to get to run. If you're gaming needs consist entirely of older games and non graphically intensive games (2d games, turn based strategy, etc) then the M1330 can be described as a good primary gaming machine. If you're looking to run modern and future games then the M1330 is not the best choice for a primary gaming machine. You really end up needing a larger laptop that houses a stronger GPU. -
Oblivion on low settings still looks pretty good.
Will oblivion play with 8400gs card?
