The desktop HD4890 has been out recently though - and it seems a decent performer. I'm just wondering if a Mobile HD4890 would ever suffice?
-
Considering that the HD4850 just came out for notebooks and its desktop counterpart has been out for quite some time, I wouldn't expect an HD4890 for another while at least.
I mean, cmon lol : Give it a bit of time >.> -
As a magic 8 ball would say " Sources say no "
-
I don't see why there would not be, it will just take quite a while for it to come out, I would say earliest by year's end.
-
Is the 4890 an actual different card or just an overclocked 4870?
-
Well there can be, just that the thing housing it won't be small lol(unless some magical cooling solution is found by then XD).
Do we really all need that much horsepower so soon though? Last I checked, only a handful of games(Crysis, GTA4 for example) really need that much horsepower. The majority of games out today(and probably tomorrow) won't utilize the highest of the high specs. -
It's likely that ATI will eventually produce a mobile 40-nm chip that out performs the mobile 4870 the way the 4890 out performs the desktop 4870 but I don't think it's likely that ATI will produce a mobile 4890 that uses the same 55-nm desktop GPU.
-
Probably not, unless you want a fireball.

POOOOOOOOOfFFFFFF

4870s just came out, the earliest I expect 4890s would be next year.

My sauces tell me to look for something new within eight months. My sauces are to be taken very seriously.

I can totally see a 40 nm 4890 with 256 bit memory interface with GDDR5 VRAM.

Last full paragraph.
50% chance. Realistically 20% chance if the desktop 4890 OC version would use a different ASIC and if ATi cares or not about overpopulating their Mobility 4800 series line. -
What I'd prefer ATI do is try and use the 40-nm die to produce a single-card dual GPU 4860x2 that's small enough to fit in 15" or 16" laptops.
-
There are no such thing as any dual GPU cards for laptops. I doubt its possible at this moment in time unless you throw in dual 4670 chips (at max due to TDP). The current high end cards are <75W. You will be lucky to fit a single 4860 in a 15".
-
I'd like to see a dual core GPU in the future.
-
It's a 4850x2 that was supposedly developed specifically for one OEM but hasn't appeared in any systems yet. (My guess is still a future Dell Studio XPS 18 but that's based on nothing but wishful thinking.)
The problem with the card is it's not really any smaller than 2 individual cards....with 40-nm they may be able to reduce it's size somehwhat.
As for the 4860 it will be in the 15" ASUS K series. -
How can there be higher clocked HD 4870 aka HD 4890?
ATi has reduced clocks to maintain low TDP and Power.
It is only possible on a new architecture and smaller fab process(40nm) and till GDDR5 is concerned it has nt even showed up in ASUS W90, so less chance that GDDR5 wud come and if it comes then it would be lower clocked(350mhz) which is very unlikely.

Will there ever be a Mobility Radeon HD4890?
