Hey so i took the plunge and orded a new 1520 with the following:
T7500 2.2 Core 2 Duo cpu
3GB Dual-channel 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Nvidia Gefore 8600m GT 256mb
I will be running XP on this machine, as long as i manage to get it up and running.
My main concern is that having only 3gb of ram and or the fact that the video card it only ddr2 and not ddr3 like i've seen people discussing that it might struggle to run current games?
I would like to be able to run games like BF2, WoW and Supreme commander at 1280x800 with high setting and obtain fps over 35. Does anyone with a better understanding of this all believe that this will be possible?
I would also like to give gears of war a go because i dont own a 360.
Help and responses are much appreciated guys.

Not sure how the 8600M GT will perform in those games but I would suggest using Vista on it if you want to enable the pretty effects of DX10 on newer games.

my bf2142 which is mor egraphics intensive than bf2 are in here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=146869
I used vista and it worked fine, but with xp it would only work better for you plus you have 3gb ram whereas I had 2 -
I was planning on down grading (or up depending on how you look at it) to XP from the bundled vista because current games overall have better performance. Prehaps i have been mislead into believing this?

Yes you are right and some of the current games do lost 5-10% performance in Vista. However considering your 8600M GT should be good enough for current games I wouldn't care about the small performance lost. Besides, you really should try out those awesome DX10 effects in newer games which are only available in Vista.

Ahk, i was assuming that because i only have 3gig ram and not 4gig that it might struggle with current games under vista?
In regards to the DX10, a game such as UT3 i would probably only be able to play it decently in DX9 mode with lowish settings?
Thanks for the replies so far -
Actually 3GBs should be enough for gaming in Vista... and I reckon your card should be able to play UT3 with medium high settings in DX9 and probably low-med settings in DX10 since Epic usually optimizes their games fairly well for lower-end machines.

ahk, be interesting to find out eventually.
I just think that running XP is the smarter choice atm. -
