Hi, So I'm planning on getting a notebook and was wondering if the notebook spec can run games better than my desktop (in my sig). I'm quite happy with the performance of my desktop (it's maxs out DX10 Crysis 2 and a lot of other new games and its like almost 2 years old!).

Malibal Lotus P150HM (basically a rebranded Clevo)
    Intel® Core™ i7-2820QM, 8MB L3 Cache, 2.30-3.40GHz
    (8GB) 8192MB, PC3-10660/1333MHz DDR3 - 2 SO-DIMM
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 485M 2GB GDDR5 (I'll probably OC this to 580m levels--hopefully it won't explode)
    750GB 7200rpm 2.5" SATA 300
    Microsoft® Windows® 7 Home Premium; 64-bit

I'm not sure if it could -beat- your desktop - usually, I find that notebook parts are at least a generation behind desktop equivalents with the same "numbers".

I know this is the case with Graphics cards, but how about CPU and RAM? I know the i7 920 is pretty old...but still very good, and now the notebooks have some second generation mobile i7 platform.

With TurboBoost, your CPU (desktop or laptop) will almost never be a bottleneck in current-gen video games, except maybe a couple of titles like SC2. Also 8GB RAM is pretty much overkill for gaming.

It all comes down to the performance comparison between your desktop graphics card and your laptop graphics card; hard to know unless you can find some online benchmark or can compare the performance yourself.

A new GPU + SSD would make your desktop last a little longer. :p

But do note that even the top of the line notebook GPU cant beat cheaper high end desktop cards.
I mean a AMD Radeon HD 6950m would totally slaughter my mobile GPU. D:

Do a benchmark of 3DMark 11 of your desktop with its current CPU. A GTX 485M with a 2820QM might do 2800-2900 points in 3DMark 11. 3DVantage is for benching DirectX 10, and compare the GTX 485M Vantage scores with a relatively the same CPU capabilities online.

Okay, thanks-- I remember the number was
    12574 for my desktop.

Edited (I tested it while OC a little). Now it's stock

Well considering that my vantage score is basically 10k, and 485m is quite faster, besides your laptop configuration using a faster CPU... it should do the trick of offering similar performance I guess.

My Sager NP8170 has GTX 485m and i7-2720QM and is bested by my desktop with i5-2400 and GTX 460 (eVGA Superclocked however).

Considering that the GTX 485m has similar performance to a regular desktop GTX 460, which is slightly better than a GTX 275. I would say that the laptop will perform similar or a little better than your desktop.

A 2820QM is better than a desktop i7 920 so CPU wise that is better @ stock(OC the 920 should decimate that)

The real issue would be the GPU which would have slightly better performance than your GTX 275. Like Deagleson said you may just want to look at upgrading your GPU and get a SSD, or look @ a DUAL GPU solution laptop from Clevo/Alienware if you really want a powerful laptop. The m18x with Dual 6970's is scoring around 23-25k in vantage. (it is getting 580m's soon as well if you are more of a green team person)

Ur desktop with some tweaking would run game a lot better. That laptop isnt slow though, however both at stock ur desktop will still be faster. A single 485m will not beat a 275....

Alrighty, thanks guys. I'm only spending around $2000 range (so no huge Alienware GTX 580m SLI) on my new notebook. I've already posted on another thread but basically it comes down to

    Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM, 6MB L3 Cache, 2.0-2.9GHz
    GTX 580m

    or

    ($145 more)
    Intel® Core™ i7-2820QM, 8MB L3 Cache, 2.30-3.40GHz
    GTX 485m

Which do you think would get higher vantage score stock?

If for gaming, go for i7-2630QM and GTX 580m. The Sandy Bridge CPU's are really quite powerful and shouldn't bottleneck any game in the near or even distant future.

Until Ivy Bridge strolls along and makes everything "obsolete".

'You unzipped that file in 2 seconds on SB? I have IB and I can do it in 1 second! :D That's twice as fast.'

Is the IB compatible with the Clevo 15.6" structure?

No. Sandy Bridge mobile motherboards will not be compatible with Ivy Bridge.

The only difference is you can keep that CPU for years and change out the GPU whenever you want to, laptops aren't like that :(
