What os is better for gaming? I have windows 10 now and had some minor issues, i heard win 7 is more stable? Im currently playing new games from 2014 to 2016 like doom and witcher 3 etc. If i switch to win 7 will the games be more stable? I have 880m gtx SLI, also does win 7 support new games as to date? thanks.

Unfortunately Win 10 is the best way to go if you plan on keeping up with the latest games. DirectX 12 support is here and going to become the new standard, and only compatible with Windows 10. Most games will support Windows 7 but not sure how much longer device manufacturers will continue to offer reliable driver updates for Win 7.

Probably another couple of years or so. Then Win 7 is basically obsolete.
How is Win 10 coming along in terms of all the snooping and dumbing down etc? -

Personally I think 10 and 7 provide almost the same gaming performance. Nonetheless, as it was mentioned the more DX12 titles come out, the more W10 would seem like a better idea.

Thanks for the replies, win 10 is future ready i only dont like the stability issues im getting so i will make a fresh reinstall later

Do a dual boot. Use windows 7 as a primary OS if you want then do a windows 10 install for DX12 exclusive games.
I have had less issues on Windows 7 with my games than windows 10 so right now I'm dual booting. (Windows 10 is primary right now, but that may change at this rate) -

Ok just got a fresh install in win 10, maybe it was due to i updated online (the previous free update from win 8 to 10) is the culprit, i have some latency issues during gaming that i need to tone down some setting even at SLI, i literally formatted all my hdds and made a clean install, more stable so far

Windows 10, DriectX 12 is the future.

You could probably get away with W7 for a bit longer because currently DX12 isn't really all that (in most cases it decreases performance), and it'll be a while yet before we see every game come with a DX12 option.
With that said, if we're talking longer down the line, W10 is probably a better bet.hmscott likes this. -
True. For now Win 7 is fine. Always can upgrade to Win 10 easily down the road if you feel you need it.

So far there are 16 DX12 games, so I think Win7 will be fine for a while.

I hope the OP did a dual boot set-up. If not when he go to upgrade he will have to pay for win10. I did my dual boot with with win8.1, then just switched. I figured at some point win10 will be rock solid and then why pay for it. Oh, I'm playing everything on win10, no problems so far.

W7 for older notebooks
W10 for newer, more powerful notebooks. -
My laptop is over 8 years old now. Running Win 10 on it no problem.
In terms of functionality or performance, I didn't seem to notice any losses compared to 7.
It really depends on people's individual preferences.. though I would imagine that like with any transition to a new OS, finding proper drivers for older hardware can be a pain - and if drivers turn out to be an issue, sticking with Windows 7 might be preferable.
My Win 10 installation also managed to fix a glitch I had with Win 7 (waking up out of sleep mode tended to freeze my laptop it would seem and anything short of restarting it didn't work - Win 10 fixed this issue), though I agree that this would be just 1 personal example that may not be an indication of anything. -

W7-8.1 is fine for the rest of this console generations for reasons I will now copy/paste from a previous post I made somewhere.
"Remember how DX9 stuck around because of all the XP users until like just before the PS4/XB1 launches?
...we're in the same scenario with DX12 as PC gaming was in 2007 with Vista and DX10.
1: CPU requirements biggest bounce comes with new consoles and then sort of stay there. Getting a P4 1.7GHz mostly covered you after PS2/Xbox launch until PS3/360, 2.4GHz C2D mostly covered you after PS3/360 launch until PS4/XB1, i5 2500 is covering you after PS4/XB1 launch. That's basically the pattern that has formed since 2000.
2: Both DX10 and DX12 are being tied exclusively to new OSes with a measure of negativity attached to them at about the same point in time after a new console launch.
3: Many DX10 effects made it's way back to DX9 or were modded in. Likewise, DX11.3 already makes many DX12 effects available to W7-8.1.
http://wccftech.com/directx-11-3-api/
The DirectX 11.3 API will contain features that form a subset of D3D 12. So any feature you see here is automatically included in the succeeding API. The following list shows the new “Rendering Features”:
Ordered rasterizer View
Typed UAV Load
Volume Tiled Resources
Conservative grid
4: The other benefit of DX12 is the API that it reduces CPU overhead to increase performance. Is there a clear performance benefit to DX12? Yes. Is it something that suddenly going to make games ported from consoles with weak x86 processors too difficult to run on clearly more powerful x86 PCs? I doubt it. ...especially since someone went through the trouble of transferring the graphic effects side of DX12 via DX11.3
5: Publishers are not going to limit themselves to the DX12 customer base. Skyrim [11/11/11] was DX9 and XP compatible. Far Cry 3 [12/04/12] was DX9 and XP compatible. The popularity of W7 let some AAA games [like Bioshock: Infinite - 03/25/13] get away with compatibility back to Vista only, but they preceded the PS4/XB1 launch relatively closely. "
Pre 2006 XP/DX9
2007 Vista/DX10
2009 W7/DX11
2012 W8
2013 W8.1
2015 W10/DX12
2020s Linux/Vulkan

They should remove telemetry and M$ store crap from Win10 to make it perfect for gaming. Strip the OS from useless bloat and let the user decide what to run on their machine.
Windows 7 is better in this regard. Plus it's UI looks fresh and lively, contrary to the all-flat on Win10 (my opinion ofcourse). Seems like flat is the new trend here on the most popular OSes (Win, Android, iOS)

I won't say the fear of problems with running windows 10 is unwarranted, I've tried stepping into windows 10 twice before that ended badly where updates stopped working for no reason and so I went back to windows 8. Currently though my gaming desktop is holding windows 10 stable and my new msi laptop is windows 10 and I'll hold them to it. -
Privacy matters & ower user ? -> Handsdown Win7 !! DX12 is B$ anyways (atm). Period. Then when 7 becomes totally obsolete then some may still hang onto 8.1 & You can dual boot always.
Else Win10 -> the iSheep road.
First a true story of the Winblows and the giant fiasco we are already into...
(Random Informative Internet Post - A wall of text, prepare yourselves)
Next is if you plan to be on the bleeding edge and want the best out of your Win10? Then you still have options but you need to have to put some effort to steamline and exorcise the devil from the M$ Winblowsx follow these threads
Phoenix's thread on Win10 fixing to make it work like a proper OS,
Windows10 truth the red pill thread - You can also use a proper LTSB Windows X ofc with MSTK and DISM based tools removing the Metrogimp and that Cortana Datamining *h0re, Fk the corporate filth if they don't care about the liberty why should we even give a speck of thought about the licensing and B$.
It's a rabbit hole, but interesting nonetheless...choose wisely
Hope the Vulkan kicks off faster and more into the scene since the people are realizing the sh*tstorm that Mafia$oft is into...and not get succumbed by this corporate genocideLast edited: Dec 5, 2016 -
So many things wrong with the statement above, the only sheep I see are the 2 instant thumbs up it got.

Just use Windows 10 with Winaero tweaker and startisback. It'll restore some of the classical features but also disable telemetry.
I'm dual booting but Windows 7 is for 3DMV and 3DM11 & CPU benchmarks. Otherwise, I use 10. -
No point in arguing against the user opinions, the OP asked for an opinion not to take it over the other members opinions, If you feel Win10 is productive good for you, But knowing the options doesn't necessarily hurt anyone instead improves the awareness.
Main thing is It needs so many fixes to make it smooth and user intuitive while the older OS 7 din't require anything like that. Win10 is a regression in many ways. Period.

This thread has turned into a train wreck.
Use W7 while you can, it is great, it rocks and so on, but W10 is approaching fast, and it will hit hard.
