I was not aware of this until today. Looks like Windows 8.1 give pretty big improvement to Battlefield 4 vs Windows 7.

    PCGamesHardware.de.
Notice the parameter where the CPU runs @ 3.5GHz (similar speeds our mobile CPUs run at)
    FPS with Windows 7: 80.8
    FPS with Windows 8: 96.2
    19% increase in FPS!!!

    Windows 7

    Windows 8

    PClab.pl

    AMD`s FX-8350
    53% improvement

No way, never knew the increase was that much! If I didn't have everything already set up perfectly with my Windows 7 desktop I would be upgrading right away, but I don't want to re-install all of my non-steam games and emulators and then re-add everything with custom icons to Steam. I will probably just wait until 2015 when Windows 9 releases, since I will be upgrading to that OS anyways if MS does it right... there's no point in upgrading and re-installing everything now if I'm going to do it again in 2015.

Here is a guy from Anandtech forums that tested it out for us in Multiplayer. He runs GTX 780 SLI and 4770K.

    Windows 7:
    103FPS
    79FPS
    110FPS

    Windows 8.1:
    164FPS
    127FPS
    150FPS

Thats like 50-60% increase. Holy crap!

    Windows 7

    Windows 8.1

Question, are these fps improvements also seen in windows 8 (not 8.1)?

It's hard to put any faith in BF4 multiplayer benchmarks because depending on situation the FPS can vary as much as 30-50%. Even when it's same map, same server, you'd have to have very similar circumstances to get a good read.

It was the exact same server and nobody but him played. Screenshots was taken at the exact same position.
    It should be pretty accurate.

Totally agree, I installed Windows 8.1 on my M17X only because I had to do a clean install recently and it's awesome so far, a bit snappier than Windows 7. If I'm to upgrade right now on my desktop then I need to see other games - I rarely even play BF4 anyways.

I actually like Windows 8/8.1 myself. I thought 7 was an amazing upgrade over XP and instantly loved it from the first RC and never went back to my old XP partition. I disliked 8 immediately, and found it difficult to navigate and get used to. But over time I've gotten used to everything and actually enjoy many of its useful features. I can however, see the huge pain some people have getting used to this OS.

This isn't the first time I've seen these claims. Head over to the EA forums and plenty of others have pointed out these huge differences in performance.

Yeah like I`m gonna do 2 install and reformat cycles. It is interesting, but very time consuming.

Oh, definitely. What a let down Mantle would be if simply upgrading your OS netted bigger gains in performance!

The question I want to know is whether Kepler GPUs can utilise Tiled Resources in 11.2 or whether it has to be supported in hardware for it to work. Just in case any upcoming games use 11.2 before Maxwell becomes in widespread use. AMD already support 11.2 in GCN 2.0.

Is the executable for this game 64-bit?

I did notice a significant boost going from Win7 to Win8 in a few applications with 64-bit executables.

This is shocking. I believe the first post, but not the following results of a 50% increase in performance. That's absurd. Hardware changes barely make that much of a difference, how can we expect Winblows to? :p

My next PC will probably have Windows 8/8.1 because that's what everything is geared towards. Windows 7 lost all support from Microsoft as they push Windows 8 into the lives of every PC user in the world. Eventually things will perform substantially better with Windows 8 because they'll be designed for the latest DirectX and whatnot, which is not supported on Windows 7, and never will be. As of today, switching to get a little more FPS in BF4, no thanks. There are still kinks that need to be worked out in 8, and "fancy," unnecessary features that I dislike.

and one more fact no one mentions that..windows 7 has better compatibilty.I had windows 8.1 and decided to opt for windows 7 cause some games dont worked with windows 8.1(or it was complicated to make them work)

Hmmm that doesn't seem right at all. Did they install the CPU scheduler hotfix and core parking hotfix on the Windows 7 testbed? What about disabling Aero? Anything else that skewed the results? LOL

For the majority of games there is basically no difference. BF4 is one of the rare exceptions because there are some specific CPU optimizations in DX11.1/11.2 which help it run a little faster in Windows 8/8.1. But the difference certainly isn't massive, and minimum FPS is usually what benefits the most. Just about everything else will perform the same in Windows 7 vs. Windows 8/8.1, as long as you've got those two hotfixes installed if you're running an AMD FX-based system. And Windows 8 is such a terrible desktop OS compared to 7 (and 8.1 even more so) that I would never switch just for some imaginary performance increases, which I have not seen.

I have ran Battlefield 4 on both Windows 7 and 8.1. I must say running on 8.1 is more CPU efficient, in most cases giving up to 15fps increases on my system (3770k GTX690)

Yes BF4 is more efficient on Windows 8/8.1 but it's not like 50-60% FPS improvement.

I wonder if it'll make a difference if I switched from windows 8 to 8.1. I jumped on the bandwagon the very first day 8.1 was released and ho boy. nothing worked :p Should have waited for drivers to be updated for 8.1.

Always a good idea to wait. I like to let other users find the problems. I think by now most issues have been fixed. I am on Win 8.1 and have had no real problems, but I did a clean install, if that matters. When you do upgrade, try right clicking on the start button to see those options, and of course you can boot to desktop.
