So i got wings of prey (wop) in steam and when i installed it, it said i had two more activations left. Does this mean that i can lend my cd key to my buddy and he can use it? He was planning on getting the dlc for wop and we would swap activation codes so we could play both.
    Possible?

    3rd-party DRM: FrontLine ProActive
    3 machine activation limit

It's a DRM. It simply means that you can only have it installed in two other computers for a total of three before they prevent you from installing more.

And this is why DRM is getting more restrictive all the time.

i see. so im guessing it can only be tied up to one yuplay account then. too bad.
i normally dont play games with drm but this is an exception.
wings of prey is gorgeous and fun. ive never seen a ww2 aircaft movie as beautiful as the replays of my games in wop.
its also as accesible as you want it to be. it can be a little aracedy or a simlike as you want.
    excellent game.

I'm just hoping that if you uninstall you get an activation code back? It sucks though because I don't uninstall games when I go to reformat. I can't remember every stupid game that requires uninstallation.

the activation code is needed to activate your yuplay account. however the game is also tied to your steam account. so i dont think its really necessary to uninstall/deactivate it since it is specifically linked to your steam profile.
so thats what got me thinking. if you dont need it for activation/deactivation why would they give you 3 activations? could you actually use it for another yuplay account?
    well apparently reizo think not.

Not sure about the yuplay account but it specifically mentions the 3 machine activation limit in the steam page which means that after 3 activations, you won't be able to install it anymore unless you either buy a new copy, revoke the activation during uninstallation or contact whoever's in charge of making the game and ask them to give you more activations.

Problem with that is you can't own more than one copy of the same game in Steam. I guess as long as I can get it back through uninstallation, but as frequently as I uninstall, reinstall, I know I'll forget. Hopefully they're more gracious to Steam customers. Either way, why not just use Steam's protection? It's fairly well proven.

so basically i have to uninstall the game to get back my activation if i want to install it in a reformatted computer?
would i be able to use steambackup to install it again though. it would be a pita to have to download it again.

yes. Haven't had time to play yet though. Was eyeing it when it was first released, just don't like spending $50-$60 on games any more. Can you play with keyboard mouse in arcade mode? Gamepad? I only ask because with my laptop, it sits in my kitchen and don't want to lug out a big flight stick. I'll play sim mode when I get time to get on my desktop though.

its one of the very few games where i would tolerate such a drm, just because wop is so awesome.

unfortunately thats all you get. however the thing is tied to your steam and yuplay account. as long as your using the same steam/youplay account on different pc's shouldnt that be considered a single activation?

3 activations tends to be the standard but some games have 5. Depends on the developer really on how many they want to put in there. Just check before buying it should mention it somewhere.

It's not steam really but rather a 3rd party DRM.

    Have a read here

The most brutal form of DRM in my opinion is the ubisoft DRM. Take a look at Assassin's Creed 2 in steam.

looking through all them now...if its 3rd party drm scurrom....waht does that mean? It doesn't say a limited amount. Look at MLB 2k9
yea i just noticed this...now on i am not buying games with drms...f them. I should have the right to install it as many times as i want....i do think its 3 different machines though....if i am wrong i will be pissed

EDIT: is there a way to see whyat gamees i already bought that havee DRMs? I have 70 games in my stam account and i would like to know which ones i must be careful with

EDIT: Alright got done looking through 75% of my games. I looked at base game and not expansions. I figured if the standalone doesnt have DRM than expansions shouldn't either.

    AVP
    MLB2k9
    wings of prey

are the games i got that have DRM. I will now forever on boycot DRM games....they can suck it.

EDIT: made a lovely hate thread ^^

    Read here:

DRM Information for Wings of Prey - Steam Users' Forums

    3. Application deactivation

The application deactivation can be useful if it is planned to change the system configuration, reinstall the operating system or transfer the application to another computer. The deactivation feature, as well as the number of available deactivations is set by the publisher during the application protection.
3.1. Application deactivation using the Internet

To deactivate the application, run it while holding down Shift or Ctrl. The activation window is displayed then; it already contains the Serial Number specified during the application activation. Go to “Deactivate” hyperlink.

After that, the deactivation confirmation window appears. Press “Deactivate”.

If the computer is connected to the Internet, and the product publisher has provided for the deactivation using the Internet, an attempt to deactivate the application automatically is made. If it succeeds, the application is deactivated. If automatic deactivation fails or it is not provided for by the product publisher, see section 3.2 of this document.

Attention! The product is actually deactivated on the computer after the deactivation confirmation.
3.2. Application deactivation without the Internet

Go to “Other means” hyperlink in the deactivation confirmation window. A window with information about the deactivation registration on server appears.

The application can be deactivated by going to an activation website (URL is indicated in the window) from another computer. Select “Product deactivation” on the activation website.

Deactivation is performed as follows. Enter the Serial Number and the Hardware Code to the corresponding fields on the website and press “Deactivate”. If the license check succeeds, the application is deactivated.

Just as with activation, deactivation can be performed by email, phone, or SMS.
    3.3. Re-deactivation

As mentioned above, the application is actually deactivated on the computer right after the deactivation confirmation. If the process is not completed for some reason, it is possible to repeat it.

To do so, the application deactivation should be run once more using one of the methods as described above. After the deactivation confirmation, perform the above-mentioned procedure (using the Internet or without it) once more.
    3.4. Reactivation

Reactivation using the Internet is on the whole similar to automatic activation.

Reactivation without the Internet is similar to the activation without the Internet. Enter the Serial Number and the Hardware Code to the corresponding fields on the activation website. After pressing “Get Activation Key”, a key to reactivate and run the application is displayed.
    4. Application activation and deactivation using protect.exe

The process of the application activation and deactivation can be also started by running the executable file of the protection system, protect.exe, which is in the application folder. The Activate, reactivate or deactivate application command should be selected in the displayed window.

Right. Well Steam also provides a service, and is reasonable about how you can use your games. Any PC installed unlimited number of times, download any number of times. But in order for it to be effective, they need to pressure other developers/publishers to remove their stupid DRM.

i personally hate drm. having steam, yuplay and a 3 activation limit seems quite excessive.
but for this game ill let it slide.
you could actually play this game without using yuplay and your activations; and all you would miss are manual updates and multiplyer. the game has been out a while and most of the updates to be done are downloaded already when you install thru steam. the additional download you get grom you play are additional skins. also, from what i saw yesterday, MP is quite thin ( in no of players) so its no biggie for me.
flying with a 100 other aircraft thru clouds with machine trails and flak all over and the burnng city of stalingrad below is so worth the hassle at 15usd.
