I just recently bought The Witcher with the purchase of my Sager 5793, specs in sig. However, I've been having frustrating problems with the game. Sometimes when i put the CD into the drive, my drive cant read the cd and spends like all of my cpu on trying to read the cd (Green light blinking in optical drive). So in this state i cant even eject the CD or get my comp to shut down. I have to press the power button. I have to restart with the CD in the drive. And sometimes when i hit the drive button with the Witcher in it, it wont eject and the comp becomes super slow as it tries to read the cd again. I've only been having this problem with this CD. Crysis, Mass Effect and every other game cd works fine except for this one. Having to restart my computer to be able to play a game is really annoying. Any suggestions comments?

Have you checked the disc itself for scratches or fingerprint smudges?

Were you able to at least install the game? If so you could simply get a "No CD" patch (perfectly legal in a gray market sort of way) to avoid having to use the disc every time you play.

Failing that I would suggest returning the CD for a replacement and wait for the 'enhanced' version of The Witcher due out soon.

It seems like defective media. I've installed and played this game without trouble. Do you have access to another gaming machine you could try it in? If it did the same thing, it's certainly the disc... Exchange it for a new one wherever you purchased it.

Congratulations you have just experienced what is known as the "Witcher Syndrome" where the game runs like crap if it even runs at all. In all seriousness I would take the game back to wherever you purchased it and try to get an exchange to rule that out as the problem. I really enjoy the game and would recommend it to anyone looking for a RPG except for the fact that I have tried it on 2 laptops (Vista) and a desktop (XP) and have never gotten the game to run smoothly, crash after crash. If you don't mind waiting a couple more months there is gonna be a major overhaul released for free that is supposed to fix alot of known bugs if the problem still persists after you exchange it, best of luck its a fun game.

I've been able to successfully run and install the game. I've been playing it without problems and crashes and it runs smoothly. I am currently on chapter three. In game i experience no issues. Its just the loading/reading of the CD. And no there aren't any smudges or anything like that. I have a desktop Athon San Diego something @ 2.4 with a 7800gt card. NOt sure if it meets system specs to even load.

I would check and see if there are any no-CD cracks out there for the game so that you wouldn't even have to have the disc inserted to play. That could possibly fix the problem assuming the crack exists and the game doesn't stream anything off the disc (which I doubt it does). Also I'm not sure of the legality issues surrounding these cracks either and have never really messed with them so I can't give you much advice but a google search or someone here might could help.

Ya i'm just worried that if a new patch comes out and that i have to update it the no cd thing will get in the way and i would have to reinstall the whole game.

That I don't know, sorry, like I said I don't really mess with them I just know that they exist. Somewhere I read that when the patch comes out you have to start a new game anyway, so re-installing it wouldn't be that big a hassle imo. Theoretically if the patch does allow save games to transfer as a last resort back up your save files on a flash drive or dvd, re-install the game without the hack, patch it, and then import your saves. I'm not 100% sure about any of this so you have to weigh the risk and rewards and decide for yourself, let us know here how it works if you do try it.

    1. Make sure you have updated your game to version 1.3
    2. Go to www.gamecopyworld.com
    3. There is an experimental CD image (1 or 2 MB)......download it.
    4. Install Daemon Tools and mount that file.
    5. Run the game without CD!!!!

Works for me..........should surely work for you.

Crysis is so ridiculously short in gameplay that it wasn't worth getting a NoCD patch for it. Bleh!
