WoW is a game that doesn't require a superfast computer to run, so it shouldn't put a massive strain on a notebook anyway. A computer will shut itself off, it the temperature of the processor exceeds a certain point. This prevents any damage physically occuring.

Unless u get a Orc smashing the laptop.
The answer is no. Laptop gets damaged by overheating the component, so get a cooler and such. But generally, even if they are slightly over heated, they can last for 2 years or more.

Ok thanks .. I'll show him this. He insists on compromising the desktop in the kitchen because he thinks it'll damage his notebook.

The game might damage his life. The laptop... I don't think so.

There's no way the software will damage the notebook. All you need to do is make sure that the notebook is on a level surface - don't block the fans or impede the exhaust.

My HP dv9000 hasn't exploded from playing WoW or set itself on fire in protest.

I always use my notebook on Targus Desk. You can click on the "show more pictures" to get other views. I use it in its folded over position that elevates the notebook at like a 10 degree angle and raises it off the surface your on. There are now active cooling things in it like fans it simply provides ventilation so the built in notebook cooling can work. With all the graphics settings maxed out (except antialiasing which I set at x2 instead of x4) at 1440x900 I get 60fps outdoors and 120+fps indoors. The lowest I've seen it drop in complex outdoor scenes or outdoors with lots of view distance is around 35fps. This is with a Go7600 w/ 256Mb of dedicated video ram.

As others have said the game is easy on your hardware so it is not going to wear down your notebook any more than normal. About the only thing I can see that might get worn out faster would be your WASD keys if you use them to move.
