I am on a 10 day trial of WoW with a trial key that came with a friend's retail copy. I was seriously considering upgrading to a full paying account so that:
1. I didn't keep getting bumped in the queue for paying customers
2. I can trade with other players
But it seems that I can't do that online. I have to go out (or use a net retailer) to purchase a full copy of the game. I can't pay for the key online, put it straight oin and go, no that would just be too easy!
So, now I'm staying with my trial until it's up, and then I'll decide whether it's worth the money. I'm certainly not spending the money and putting in the time and effort unless I know it's something I definitely want to keep playing! And I don't even know that or not because I can't get into the bloody game in the first place!

Meh. WoW is a horrible waste of time, anyway. Get a game that doesn't eat up gobs of your time, like Final Fantasy
At least there's an "end" to that game...
-
Yes, and you'll be sick of it after an hour, so it'll waste even less of your time...
<- Played FF7 once, and hated it...
-
Its the best game ever :/
-
The trial is pretty stripped down but the retail copy isn't that expensive.
It was on sale for $10 here a few weeks ago, which was pretty amazing price haha.
Another thing is, you CAN upgrade it online so you aren't stripped down, just log into the site into account management and pay for a month. I know this is possible as thats how my friend did it using my Trial(I got a free month from him signing up
).
-
I am always amazed at how much people loved FF7...seriously though, who actually liked the summons attacks after watching Knights of the Round for the bajillionth time. FF2 and FF3 were by far their best imo.
WoW is an awesome game. Good for those that like to just play cooperatively and quest...and its fun for those (like me) that only have a short time to play but love to pvp. -

How much is WoW monthly?
-
About the same as most MMORPGs, I think $14.99 per month, $13.99/month for 3 months, $12.99/month for a year?
-
moon angel Notebook Virtuoso NBR Reviewer
£9 a month in the uk. I'm liking it a lot tho, i'll probably stump up the cash, beats TV!
-
Final Fantasy VI (III) is the best MMORPG of all time, and it doesn't suffer from the inherent flaws of the genre: the 'M', the 'M', and the 'O'.
I played WoW for a while (enough to level a character to 60), and then stopped. While admittedly addictive, once I stopped to think about what I was doing, I realized how much of an incredible waste of time it was. There are much, much better games out there, and they all don't involve dealing with thousands of idiots.
If you want an RPG, do yourself a favor and play Planescape: Torment. -
I wouldn't suggest buying it, just the fact that you have to pay to play beyond the price of the game gets under my skin. In my opinion I think thats the only reason people like it, because they think since they pay to play it each month the game must be good. Things can be a addictive but not good (just as getcool told us), just because you are hooked on it doesn't mean you really like it.

yea... tv sucks -

i dont have a problem with paying for it monthly but i didnt really like it... im mean it was fun but i couldnt ever talk to anyone on trial as well as my friend had his account canceled and i couldnt find anythign because the map kinda sucks... other than that it was pretty fun... a time waster but fun. -
Hmm.. let's see here, they pay to play it each month because they think it must be good just because they pay for it? Have you played Phantasy Star Universe? Now THAT'S abysmal. My brother payed for it and canceled it the next month because it was that terrible.
WoW has 6 million people playing, and you're telling me that it's not good, but people play it just because they pay for it? Also, he's trying out the TRIAL, which is FREE, so he can tell whether it is good or not. He says he likes it.. so he could pay to try it for a month then see if he wants to continue or stop.
WoW indeed isn't, I'd say, addicting... it just consumes you because of the grand scale of the game.
And you pay 15$ a month for upkeep of the server and for the new patches that come out monthly. Blizzard does a great job with their servers! -
Millions of people have done lots of things. Smoke, drink, follow a misguided dictator, etc. I'm not comparing WoW directly to any of these things, but I'm simply stating that the fact that it has a lot of participants alone does not tell me anything about its virtues.
But it is addicting. I'm not sure what you mean by "grand scale"... maybe you mean it has a lot of players, a big world, etc. Valid points. But the gameplay is severely limiting. It basically consists of doing exceedingly repetitive task A until you are sufficiently powerful to do exceedingly repetitive task B, etc. Rinse and repeat.
The addictive power comes from constantly challenging the player to acquire wealth, power, etc. This gives a sense of accomplishment that I will entirely agree feels immense as it happens. This is the genius of the game... while providing insanely simple gameplay, it simultaneously offers an extremely addictive sense of virtual accomplishment.
That Blizzard does a very good job of maintaining the game (at least now, years after the original WoW release) is a very true point. However, you can't tell me that they aren't making a profit. Exactly how much of a profit, I can't say, and the fact that Blizzard has produced some very good games in the past makes me inclined to believe that they should make some profit to continue the development of good games. However, bear in mind that $15 per month and $40 per retail box from 6 million subscribers doesn't entirely go towards maintenance.
Hey, to each their own. If you enjoy the game and it's worth the cost to you, great. Play. But I only want each player to realize what he or she is doing and be aware that WoW is not the be-all-end-all game as many believe. There have been, and will be, much better games that aren't MMO and don't require a subscription fee. -
Honestly, I did not appreciate single player games until Oblivion. That my friends is a work of brilliance and art. Blows away WOW and everything else.
-
I will put Planescape: Torment and the Baldur's Gate series at the top of my list. These are story-driven games, and in the case of Planescape: Torment, I would argue that it is the closest thing to good literature that the gaming industry has yet produced.
-
I agree, there are better games, but the fact is that WoW doesn't really end, you can go on for as long as you want until you feel like stopping. Now I'm not a huge WoW player (hardly really), but if you enjoy they game then you can buy it and play it for a loooonngg time.
Sure there are some computer games like Company of Heroes that are better, but they don't last as long. So the subscription fee acts sort of a pay as you go, you play until you don't want to play, you don't pay, then you are done. And you don't even have to pay 40$ for the retail game (demo), although it does come with 30 free days or something like that. -
WoW is alot of fun, I used one of those trials as well. I played that thing wayyyyy too much over that trial, it ate up alot of my break. I stepped back when it was up and looked at how much time I had wasted vs. what I could have done with that time, and couldn't do it anymore. Life's too short to be gaming constantly. I realize that most don't do it constantly, but its hard not to, that things addicting. Quit it cold turkey
-
Did you at least beat the whole game? The best parts of the game come 4 hours + on average after Midgar.
-
I never played WoW, I didn't want to get into it becuase I didn't want to pay to play a game. Instead I picked up Guild Wars. I must say that I enjoy the game, I haven't beaten it, and I have nothing to compare it to, but it is free to play and I think it is fun. Just a thought I suppose.
-
Nice to know I'm not the only one who's not into WoW. I played the trial and even did the full version. I realized it just wasn't my type of game, I swung from insanely bored to frustrated. I also felt the character customization was limited. (That's what happens when you play City of Heroes first. Best character customization I've ever seen for an Online game.)
Also, I just couldn't justify 15$ a month for it. I've got a horrible attention span when it comes to games. (The only games I've ever finished were Pokemon Blue and Mario's Super Star Saga.) If they don't have an ending, some type of true goal, I get bored VERY quickly and stop playing.
In the end, I got Guild Wars instead. Didn't have to pay monthly, so I didn't feel guilty about being an inconsistent player. I also thought it was prettier than WoW.
-
What?! A Final Fantasy basher? Git' em boys!
Jess, this is like repeatedly injecting yourself with heroine in hopes that you'll get addicted enough to pay a monthly subscription to the drug dealer. Come back to us, your family at NBR misses you! -

Too late, just bought the full thing. It was only £10 or slightly less infact. Despite the annoyances of the trial I really like the substance of the game. I find myself looking forward to playing and finding new things to do, people to play with etc. and that's just on the trial, I'm still on newbie place where it's mostly run over here run over there and kill this or that monster. Still, I figure as it's the only game to keep my attention for more than a cpl hours in the last year, it's worth investing in. I was getting well bored of TV!
Compared to city of heroes yes the character customisation isn't very good. Compared to a lot of MMORPGs though it's ok. I'm hoping it'll have a bit more scope than City of Heroes which is pretty much training and beating people up, which I found got tiresome after a while. There's also the issue that WoW runs pretty well on my little x200m whereas City of Heroes is not unplayable but looks rubbish and lags up in those massive group battles. -
Well, WoW consists of alot of questing, instances(places where you have to find a group, usually of 5 to enter because everything is 'elite'.
There are quite alot of good and interesting quests(depending on which side you are on, Horde/Alliance).
Customization is quite lacking, but even so, I barely ever see a repetition, even if they are a bit similiar, they are of a different class usually. -
Elderlycrawfish Notebook Consultant
Thinking about it, while alot of people have complained about the limited customization options available, WoW really does make it up in spades with the abundance of equipment. Not taking into account that alot of people (particularly end-game), will be going for similar pieces of gear based on its uber-ness, there's alot of gear that you can use to tweak your look. That might've been one of the big draws for me at the time, as I'm realizing that I'm a real equipment junkie in games.
So just cover up your (character's) generic-looking face with a cool helmet.
-
moon angel Notebook Virtuoso NBR Reviewer
Well there's a few faces, hair styles and colours for each race, plus what you wear and use is a choice so I don't think there willo be many similar looking characters outside of newbie areas.
-
Totally agree. Haven't played Planescape but I have played all of the BG series and they are still among my favorites, after all these years. I'd put them in the same class as Morrowind, which is of course graphically inferior to Oblivion but I think was a superior game in many respects (though not all, by any means -- ESIV is great!).
And I couldn't deny it if someone called me out on popping in the original BG1 for an hour of nostalgia, from time to time (w/ mods of course, and perhaps even segueing into a little BG2 action)
-
Try Silkroad Online if you want a F2p asian-themed mmorpg. Really, the gameplay and quality is quite amazing for a free game.
-
I'm very addiced to WoW, and I hate most all games other than sim type stuff. I just paid for a month and my laptop melted. grr.

btw anyknow where these update installers are dl'ed to thru the wow dl client? after i update i 'd like to delte these installers cuz i just dl'ed 2 patch 500mb each lol. want to save some room on my hdd
-
Lol WoW isnt so great. Shadowbane which is free (download) is so easyto use and install. I'm actually trying to promote it becuase it does not have a big community. You should try it out...the expansion pack is only 7.75 (CAN) at stores such as EB games. It works faster, its very similar to WoW. Except no monthly fees!
Graphics are a bit worse then WoW (smaller details a lot worse) but if you like it play away. -

Played 6 hours + of WoW today and will play a lot tomorrow I bet! Loving that game. Best I have played in a very long time!
-
They're in the WoW folder on whichever drive you have it in, for example C:/Program Files/World of Warcraft/ is the default.
Jess - don't play that much
-
Played WoW - wasn't that impressed (was a HUGE W3 ROC multiplayer after beating single player)(lvl 62 at one time, years ago) - I think after that I was pretty much toast on any other multiplayer games since that was the best I have ever found (opinion) - I guess I just expected more out of WoW-
WoW Trial is abysmal!
