The only game I play is WoW. I currently have a MacBook Pro and play WoW in Windows 7. The MBP has a 9600M GT 512 MB GPU and it runs WoW at Native Res of 1440x900 @ 4xFSAA and Medium Settings. Good FPS for leveling, playable FPS for raiding.

I want to get a Sony Vaio Signature Z series notebook with the i7-620M and GT 330M 1GB GPU. However this notbook ups the native res to 1920x1080.

My Question is, will I have a performance increase? Sure I have a more powerful CPU and GPU config with the newer sony, but I am also upping the Res from 1440x900 to 1920x1080.

One Caveat is I have to game at native res. I absolutly HATE running a game in some horrible resolution that is not the native res of my screen.

    Thanks all.

If I'm not mistaken, you're going to be eating a massive reduction in performance. And that's not the resolution speaking, either; the 330M isn't even a midrange GPU.

    Actually, that's likely incorrect MrFong.
According to the charts (or at the very least ... approximations), the 330M is on the higher end of mid-range gpu's.

So, more or less, the new system will behave in a faster capacity when compared to the older one, however, gaming in WoW on 1920x1080 resolution is not a good idea if you want to retain the playable frame-rates on that gpu.

The 1440x900 res can probably handle slightly higher settings, but the 1920x1080 res ... could choke.

Wows very CPU dependant, although the higher the res, a bit less pressure on the CPU happens (I think.)

But generally 1440x900 will yield much better performance, in all games, especially if thats your native res.

If not, you'l have to live with the upscaling to fit to pannel :/

Well, what do you know. My apologies.

Notebookcheck puts it at in between a 9700M GT and 9700M GTS, so...

Wait a minute. 9700M GTS > 9700M GT, but 9800M GT > 9800M GTS? Good lord, NVidia. What have you guys been smoking?

You will run it approx. same as on your oldsystem. 330M is a bit better than 9600M. Even more better is 9600M is DDR2. Power of 330M compensates for the increase in res.

Nvidia mobile GPUs' naming scheme is getting beyond ridiculous, makes me wonder if they want to confuse their customers on purpose

in all seriousness, yes, they are.

if the buyer has less information, they can't make as optimal a decision -> Nvidia gets more money.

That's one reason why i'm nver buying NVDIA until it changes...

but OP , don't expect much more form 330M especially on full hd res... it just can't handle such a high res due to 128bit memory bus... it would however handle all games well at 1440X900... but here's a piece of advice ... get a Asus G73 , Sager NP8690 or something which has ATI 5000 series card like in the 2 cases , ATI mobile 5870 , which can easily play games on full HD res...
